About Lucy Soethout
Lucy Aquan Soethout and Hans Soethout. I married my husband in 1966 and we live in Westbury, Long Island, New York. Hans is from Holland, Amsterdam and I am from Arima Trinidad. We met in 1964 on the NY World Fair, when we were both working for Hilton International. I opened the smoke oven in the Trinidad Hilton in 1962. In 1996 I renovated the house with the intention of spending my retirement years with my husband in Trinidad. However the best laid plans sometimes don't work out. All our kids, 8 and grand children live all in the US. We stayed in Westbury where we live now for 36 years. The house was empty most of the time, only being occupied for short vacationds by the family. Hans saw an article in Travel + Leisure Magazine in 2005, which was about renting a home instead of staying in a Hotel or Inn. He contacted Home Away and signed up for a trial. It worked out well. We have been with Home Away since 2005.
Lucy Soethout purchased this House in 1954
Why Lucy Soethout chose Newtown
I bought the house in 1954 because I needed a place close to Queens Hospital in POS for one of my sons who was very ill. I had a restaurant at 85 Henry Street, when Hilton asked me to become their food consultant for the La Boucan Smoke Oven they wanted to open. My reason for buying the place, is the same reason I give you: Location. Location. Location. In 1996 I renovated the house with the intention of spending my retirement years with my husband in Trinidad. However the best laid plans sometimes don't work out. Our kids, 8 and grand children live all in the US. We stayed in Westbury where we live now for 36 years. The house was empty most of the time, only being occupied for short vacationds by the family. We have been with Home Away since 2005. I walking distance of everything in POS. Mals. Shops. Down Town. Football Stadium. Cricket Stadium. You don't need a car to get around, you can walk it or take a cheap taxi that are passing by the Savannah all the time. There is also a new and imporoved public bus transportation system. You are close to the Ferry boat to Trinidad and the Water Taxi to San Fernando.
What makes this House unique

great location in Port of Spain
The location of the property is in a quiet area, many embassies or other diplomatic properties are nearby which makes the area feel more secure. Walking around at night was fine, good lighting and no risky areas noted. The home itself is well secured however the inside was dated and the caretaker had not been especially diligent in its maintenance. There was dust covering the ceiling fan blades, the floors were dirty throughout and the bathrooms were in need of a good bleaching, especially the sinks and near the commodes. Showers were excellent and had great hot water and pressure which was nice after a day of touring outside in the heat. There was no soap in either bathroom or for the kitchen. The dishes could only be rinsed off with water as there was no soap available. The washing machine and dryer were adequate, but again no soap available. The cable tv and wifi were nice amenities for the evening when not going out. The AC units worked well to cool off at bedtime.
A steel drum band rehearses/plays down the street midweek and open for listening. A great assortment of eateries nearby as well, all within an easy walking distance with good prices. Overall we would come back but the need for updating and a regular cleaning is a major consideration.
Good morning Jaqueline.
I am now reading your nice review.
I suffered a stroke September 2018 and have not bee able to keep up with my property.
I am slowly getting better and able to walk again a little .
But with my age things are not going as fast as you would like.
I be 89 years old on November 16.
My husband is helping me now.
I was relying on people in Trinidad to keep the place clean.
Buy I see now that that was not the case. We paid them well in the hope they would do a good job.
We are now taking care of the property ourselves. We are in Trinidad and able to see our guest when they arrive.
When you visit Trinidad another time, I would like to welcome you.
Thank you for your input that was noted by us.
Lucy and Hendrik

My family and I Enjoyed our stay, we felt very safe, secure and relaxed! The place is located very close to restaurants, the savannah, and public transport. The owners are very, very welcoming and professional. We absoulty would love to stay with them again in the future, Hendrik made us feel like family!
We had a family reunion in Trinidad this year and we booked both houses with Hendrik and Lucy. The houses were very clean and everything worked great. There is so much space which was needed because we had A LOT of people staying in the houses. The benefits are the washer/dryer and being close to somewhere else that has WIFI (the wifi in the house was very spotty and did not work at times but it is something they're getting fixed).
The price for what you get does not compare, we can't wait to go back and we've been telling everyone about it. We walked to the Savannah every night because we were so close so it's definitely a great option for Carnival. We also walked downtown (not as close). The house is in a great central safe location. Can't wait to come back!
Great location private lots of room.
We were one block from the savannah. CLose to grocery stores and restaurants. The unit is air conditioned with a washer drier. It is very secure with an off street parking space. This is a great place for carnival attendees and folks visiting family in POS. Lots of room.
What can I say about this place?.... It's absolutely fantastic and definitely a home away from home. My friends and I had the pleasure of staying in both the front and back house for our carnival vacation and would certainly come back. The location is great. The Savannah is literally around the corner, you can hear the mas trucks going past and the steel pans beating from the house. There is a small convenience store on the next corner which sells cooked food and is open 24 hours. There's an Italian restaurant, bank and Mcdonald's on the road. Cipriani boulevard is the road parallell to woodford street and has bars and restaurants on it. TGI fridays is a 5 minute walk from the house. The supermarket is less than a 10 minute walk away and has a moneygram outlet (bonus!) The avenue, where all the clubs are, is a further 5 min walk from the supermarket. Basically everything is in within walking distance of this lovely home.
The house - the house is secure, at no point did we feel threatened or unsafe whilst in the house. The house is spacious, has a large dining and living room. all the rooms have at least one double bed in them. There are two bathrooms which is a bonus when living with other females! The kitchen is fully equipped, everything i would have at home is basically in the house.
The owners - Lucy and Hendrik are lovely people and even though i have never met them i consider them as friends. Any questions i asked were answered rapidly. They are very patient, friendly and accommodating people, They even organised a driver to pick us up from the airport. You can tell that they are professional from the care and attention they gave us.
The Caretaker - The caretaker, Anthony, lives onsite and is a lovely guy. He makes you feel comfortable and safe. Anything we needed help with, he was there for us. He's a great guy.
I would recommend everybody to stay here. I read a previous comment about furniture being old or the place needing revamping. I personally did not see anything that needed changing. It is not a hotel it is a home and I believe that all the furniture add a rustic and homely feel to this place. I had no problems with the owners or the house and will definitely be staying again! If I had to use one word to describe everything about this place, including the owners, driver and everything else it would be 'Perfect'.
THANK YOU Lucy and Hendrik for letting us stay in your lovely house and we look forwards to staying there again.
The house is located in the center of town and a few minutes from the Savannah.
It is also in walking distance of the new Cultural Center and in walking distance of several Embassy, including the US Embassy
