3 bedroom, 2 bath, full kitchen & laundry facilities, surrounding lanai
Spacious rooms with many windows and huge surrounding lanai create an open, refreshing atmosphere in this lovely retreat known locally as 'Cedar House.' The building was designed with two completely separate apartments, a 2-bedroom apartment on the upper floor and a 3-bedroom apartment on ground floor. If you require more space than our 3-bedroom Garden Apartment (#215220) provides, you can reserve the entire house with a total of 5 bedrooms -- an ideal setup for family reunions or other times when you want to be close without living on top of each other. (Details provided on request.)
The garden apartment on ground floor offers three bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry facilities, fully equipped kitchen, and immediate access to a yard full of flowering plumeria, bougainvillea, hibiscus, banana, mango and assorted other tropical foliage -- all sheltered by coconut palms. Inside, you'll find high-speed internet and satellite TV. There's off-street parking for your car.
A five-minute stroll takes you from your Cedar House lanai to the friendly waters of Wai'Opae Marine Conservation District, where snorkelers swim in coral gardens with curious turtles and tropical fish. Explore the quiet roads of Vacationland (that's really its name) and neighboring orchid farms. Or wander down Red Road to soak in the geo-thermally heated, spring-fed oceanside pool at Ahalanui Park about a mile away.
Follow Red Road (Hwy 37) farther south along Hawaii's newest gorgeous coastline, and there's a chance you might see red-hot lava flowing into the sea. Stop along the way to walk among the ironwood trees on spectacular bluffs above the breaking waves at MacKenzie Park. Or sun-bathe with the locals in the cozy atmosphere of Kehena's clothing-optional black sand beach.
Then check out the shops and fine restaurants (Thai, French, Italian, among others) in Pahoa town, eight miles inland from Cedar House and on the other side of Lava Tree State Park. If it's Sunday, you might want to see what's happening at Maku'u Farmers' Market nearby. You'll find fresh vegetables, fruit and music with lots of local color there.
Within easy driving distance, remember the historic old town of Hilo with its antique stores, restaurants, university lecture series, concerts, state-of-the-art planetarium, and quite a bit more. At the planetarium you can learn how ancient Polynesians used their knowledge of the heavens to navigate uncharted Pacific waters, sailing to and from Tahiti for centuries before European ships arrived. Displays of on-going volcanic activity show how these islands were formed in the first place. Check out the farmers' market and picnic in the peaceful parks near Hilo's harbor, where downtown streets were inundated once by tidal waves memorialized now in the Pacific Tsunami Museum.
An hour's drive south from Hilo takes you to the most active volcano on earth, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit the Kilauea Volcano Caldera, Thurston Lava Tube, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, or hike intriguing trails through rain-forest wilderness. In another direction, you might find yourself looking at the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea rising 14,000 feet above sea level (elevations comparable to the Colorado rockies) and more than 30,000 feet above the ocean floor. From there it's an easy drive back to your Vacationland retreat.

nice, well managed place in great location, but Ground Floor is not what you want in Vacationland
This was a very well appointed, nice place. The management was super responsive and even brought over a brand new citrus juicer for us, which we used a bunch and really appreciated. Unfortunately, we ended up staying inside quite a bit on the rainy days that are so common in this area, because of all the little bugs outside biting us at ground level. I would highly recommend booking the UPSTAIRS unit here, so you can enjoy the fresh air and views while avoiding the bugs. Otherwise we had a nice stay.
This is a noisy apartment, not private house
If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, private stay, this is not the right place. From the description it seems that if you want to rent out the top, you can, otherwise no one is there. Not so. We are a quiet couple who like privacy for a getaway, and on top of us were 4 adults and a baby. We heard loud voices, constant tromping on the floor above us, chopping, etc, 10 mo baby was the least of the noise issue. The lanai was nice if no one is talking loud or crying on outer Deck above you. The upper Tenant stair pathway to their car goes right past bottom master bedroom windows, so instead of a light bright bedroom, curtains were closed. Old messy pot & pan cupboard, no mix bowl set for fruit /salads. No shampoo or shower soap. Not a good value for us. There are plenty of homes in the area for the price which are private. The positive is the excellent walking location for snorkeling the lava tide pool area.
As indicated several places in the write-up, Cedar House consists of two apartments listed separately by VRBO. The balcony apartment is handled by a different booking agency, but it seems unlikely they would tell anyone what the writers seem to have concluded, i.e. that both apartments would be taken off the market if they rented only one of them. House rules for the balcony apartment discourage young children for safety reasons, but such rules depend on guests' observance of an Honor Principle that regrettably wasn't observed in this case. Local management is very responsive to guests' needs and we do regret having failed them here. Management would happily provide fruit bowls if a client asked; but we don't offer shampoo since guests often have specific preferences and bring their own.
We had an excellent experience with the owner and the management staff. Terrific folks!
They really went above and beyond to accommodate our group. The place was nice sized and the location/proximity to the Tide Pools couldn't have been better.
We had the lower unit (3 bedroom) and the bedrooms were good sized. Just a little dark when the sky was cloudy and the rain was coming down. Nice space on the lanai as well.
Minor "hiccups" upon arrival, but "Cruz" happily took care of everything! Even brought us fresh picked coconuts ready to enjoy. Rented both units - top unit more updated and "fancy" while bottom more "lived in" but loved the spaciousness nonetheless. We had 7 occupants, but could definitely have had two or three more on blow up mattresses - ask the owners next time! Both units amply supplied with cooking/dining utensils/supplies. No AC but lots of windows and screened entrances for fresh air. Would be nice to have ceiling fans in the living room and all bedrooms instead of floor/oscillating ones for garden unit. . Will definitely consider again for future, but really would love the garden unit to be furnished like the balcony one!! All our family get-togethers were downstairs. The hammock upstairs would have been perfect downstairs! Wrap-around lanais and balconies in both units provided lots of gathering and entertaining space. Tidepools just at the end of the street, but not ideal for those with mobility issues. Plenty of pools for kids if you follow the paved walk, the open lagoon for swimming is a short walk through a "jungle" at the end of the street. Warm pond is a short 2-mile drive, and just past that, Isaac Beach Park. Snorkeling gear provided, but some folding beach chairs would have been preferred to take to the beach. Don't forget to bring the "OFF" ! Our sincere mahalos to Bill and Mary for arranging this for us!
Aloha DeeDee, thanks for informative review. Just to avoid misconception, Cedar House doesn't provide snorkeling equipment (except by accident). If you find something useful here, it's a gift from earlier guests! We recommend Nautilus Dive Shop in Hilo, or Jeff Hunt Surfboards in Pahoa, for economical rentals and expert attention to factors like foot size and facial shape.
The average is really three and a half stars. I regret it cannot be five.
For five women the common spaces of the balcony unit and the five bedrooms worked well for our week together. Common space in lower unit unsatisfactory.
I would advise anyone considering renting to inquire whether the carpets have been replaced before you commit to renting.
The location is very good. The Tide Pools are fantastic.
The writer expressed no dissatisfaction with her own accommodations in #4711451, but she disapproved of carpeting in the flat reviewed here (#215220) which was rented/occupied by friends. Her friends reported no problem; but all carpets in both apartments were steam cleaned ASAP just to make sure. Professional assessment by Stanley Steemer, Inc. in October: Carpeting in good shape, no replacement recommended.
Beautiful location, great price, but a bit run down.
Gorgeous location on Kapoho tide pools. Incredibly reasonably priced to sleep 5 of us. Obviously lived by the owners, with great tips about where to swim and when. No AC- which is normal for area but made it very hot in the evenings- cooled off beautifully to sleep at night in the 2 bedrooms with ceiling fans. The 3rd bedroom has only a oscillating fan which didn't draw in air and was really hot. Run down, towels are threadbare and snorkel equipment is mostly broken. A value for the budget minded but with flaws. Well equipped kitchen with good sharp cooking knives. Coconuts abound.
Cedar House doesn't claim to provide snorkeling gear -- too many variables like flipper style, foot size, and facial shape to keep track of. But if it looks like future guests might find it useful, we don't throw away gear left behind by well-intentioned guests.
