Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

WATERFRONT SUNSETS...at Ann's Cottage you will be unwinding happily in your quiet, secluded, clean and well-appointed cottage with more than 150’ of private waterfront, pier & deck, just over a walkable, bikeable mile from downtown Fish Creek, the bustling but picturesque center of the resort area (#1 Midwest getaway according to Midwest Living Magazine).

The shore-front cottage, with its screened porch set back just 30 feet from the water, is not visible from the street. The only traffic that you're likely to hear is boat traffic, and the waves will lull you peacefully to sleep.

PEOPLE JUST LOVE...the screened-in porch overlooking the water. There is a multipurpose table, four chairs and two wicker armchairs and a settee. Fans of alfresco dining can enjoy a deck in the yard with another table and chairs and a grand water view, yet convenient to the kitchen. Some guests tell us that they have never eaten a meal in the kitchen because it is so very pleasant dining outside.

INSIDE...the living room has a classic stone fireplace, and seasoned firewood is provided for you, along with satellite TV, Netflix, books, games, DVDs and a stereo with an MP3 docking station. You will find the kitchen to be very nicely equipped, and its eating area also offers a great view of the water.

There are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed, the other with twins. The bathroom has a tub/shower and new Martha Stewart vanity.

Mattresses and appliances are all recent. We have added air conditioning. If you spot a cleaning problem when you arrive, we have an agreement with our cleaners that they will return to correct it.

EVERYTHING YOU MIGHT NEED… An on-site caretaker (at the property entrance) is available gratis to help with any house-related problems and doesn’t mind answering a quick question about area attractions.

The owners provide information for arranging tickets and boat and bike rentals ahead, detailed instructions for “operating” the cottage, along with guidebooks and their suggestions for exploring the county. Even a needle and thread!

THE NEIGHBORHOOD...is quiet, beautiful, and special. Ann's Cottage, with a private 150 foot shoreline unique for a small rental, is situated on one of the early 20th century estates in a Fish Creek waterfront summer colony dubbed "millionaires' row.” It is well separated and screened from 2 other houses on the property (the caretaker's cottage and owner's large home are each hundreds of well-screened feet away) and has its own private waterfront, ample yard and garden.

On the way to Main Street, the trees meet over the woods-and-wildflower-lined road, offering a splendid route for a walk or short bike ride. Be on the watch for spring wildflowers, wild turkeys, deer, pileated woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and other wildlife.

Your destination, quaint Fish Creek, has arguably the best amenities in Northern Door: a picturesque village and harbor, a grocery, unique shops, many restaurants at all price points, gourmet carryout pizza, Peninsula State Park, live theater, art galleries and art school classes, a friendly bar/grill, a coffee shop, a bank, hair salon, a library and bookstore among them. And TWO ice cream shops, a candy emporium and children's toy shop. Several golf courses are minutes away.

SO MANY PLEASANT WAYS TO PASS THE TIME...relish a leisurely cup of coffee on your porch listening to our cardinals sing while you breeze through a sudoku or crossword. Settle in an Adirondack chair overlooking the water, breathe in the natural cedar aromatherapy, and read a book or catch a glorious nap on the hammock in the sun or shade.

Hang out by the water and see pelicans (yes!) and gulls soaring over the waves. Enjoy a glass of wine and a spectacular sunset over the water. And at the end of a magical day the stars put on a show for free, maybe even Northern lights, without city lights to dim the dazzling display. It will be totally relaxing.

COMPARING COSTS

For less than many local hotel or resort rooms in season, you have both indoor & outdoor space, many amenities, and an incomparable and private waterfront setting. You can save even more by having some meals or carryout at home.

OUR GUESTS WEIGH IN…Be sure to skim the many “Traveler Reviews” at the end of our VRBO listing.

Many of our guests have pronounced the cottage, the waterfront setting, and the neighborhood to be quite simply enchanting. They value the privacy here, as well as the convenience of being so centrally located in Door County. There are a number of guests who have vacationed here regularly for 20 years. Once you stay here, you will understand why!

About Ann Clark

My husband has happily summered here in Fish Creek from his birth to his old age, with many entertaining stories of past adventures. I married into this and my only previous claim to fame was biking from Green Bay to Gill's Rock with my Girl Scout troop, sleeping on tick-filled straw (early youth hostels) and drinking in the scenic beauty when I wasn't struggling up hills on my old fat-tired, single gear bike. It was love of the scenic Door at first sight, although maybe not so much the bike!

Ann Clark purchased this cottage in 1927

Why Ann Clark chose Door County

Our family was the first of the 'summer people' in 1897 when our grandfather bought most of the logged land on the Gibraltar bluff and to the west along the shore. They built the first Fish Creek summer estate (burned down when Curly Lambeau later owned it) next to the Carpenter Gothic Church of the Atonement. With our father's generation, a new house was built in 1927 to the south and it has been in the family ever since.

Guestbook comments from the owner

COMMENTS FROM OUR 2007 GUEST BOOK:

Well, everyone still loves the water and its viewing, and the many ten-year olds who wrote for their families ignored the cottage charms to urge us all to "swim a lot!" (I've modestly shaved the number of exclamation marks.)Besotted as we owners are with this special spot, we wonder whether prospective guests want to read another ten times that our guests really do love the cottage. A poem, long list of cot- age charms and Christmas letter are too long. So a small sample follows. Reserve the cottage for the full story!

Wonderful in every way

  • 5 of 5

I had a great time with my three sisters. The weather was a bit cold and wet but this property was so great it didn't matter one bit. We sat on the screened porch and watched the sunsets and the storms. The colder temperatures allowed us to have an excuse to have a fire in the really nice fireplace. Plenty of firewood and firestarters. Kitchen was perfect amount of space.

Very secluded and great location. Had it been warmer we would have enjoyed the sitting area on the dock area. Close to some great restaurants.

Will be returning, just a matter of how soon!

Owner's Response: The owners thank our guest for a really upbeat review in the face of unusually inclement weather. We try to control the cottage amenities to provide a predictably comfortable and well-equipped environment, but we are powerless against Midwest weather--the previous guests had great weather. It is always a bit of a gamble. We do include DVDs, Netflix, books and games, baseboard heat and a roaring fire, and the Door has a number of indoor attractions as well. In our lab we are working on better weather...

We have stayed in many cabins throughout Door County, and we highly recommend this one. Its historic character is intact, but coupled with modern comforts. There is a large and functional fireplace that is capable of heating the cabin (but there are baseboard heaters as well). The cabin is close to the homes of the owners and the caretakers, in case you need something, but situated as to feel isolated, should you choose to put yourself in that mindset. Since the cabin is on the bay side of DC, you will see beautiful sunsets. The cabin is positioned so that it is flooded with orange light in the evenings. Visitors to DC often spend money to eat at restaurants with sunset views and to visit the parks and shoreline, but at this cabin there is no need to do so - nature and the lake are right on your doorstep. Unlike some cabins further south (near Sturgeon Bay), there is no light pollution at this cabin. You can see the stars. Ann communicated with me for months about our stay and she was always pleasant, responsive, and helpful.

Charming cottage with amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed a 2-night stay at Ann's Cottage in Fish Creek, WI, and we were highly satisfied. This was our first trip to Door County. I can't speak highly enough of the owners, especially Ann, who communicated with us in a timely and professional manner. The Clarks have thought of every possible situation and/or need for your stay at their cottage (the "Little House"), which is privately situated right on the water. It is a treat even finding this gem, tucked down and off of beautiful Cottage Row. We loved the view and took advantage of the cozy fireplace (and abundant supply of dry wood) when we weren't exploring Fish Creek, Peninsula State Park, and the fantastic restaurants close by! Our bedroom was comfortable and cozy and although we could have cooked in, we had most of our meals out. Beautiful piece of 'heaven' and grateful to have spent 2 nights at Ann's Cottage.

We had a lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Ann's Cottage for 3-nights. Very quaint and cozy cottage (also, very clean). The sunsets were spectacular. The views of Green Bay were breathtaking. The owners were very hospitable. We were in close driving distance to downtown Fish Creek, truly an ideal location. There was lots to do and see in Door County (shopping, sightseeing, wonderful restaurants, hiking, driving through the State Park) We hope to return next year and we highly recommend this cottage as a place to stay.

Dream Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I always try to find a three or four day weekend to get away in fall and were very intrigued by Ann's Cottage. Wow, what a find! The site is breathtaking! The cottage itself is beautiful, comfortable, well equipped, and ideally located where it is both private and quiet and yet only a mile walk or bike ride into Fish Creek. Ann, one of the owners, greeted us and we knew right away in talking with her that we were going to enjoy our stay. There are not enough days to fit in all that you want to do here. When not riding our bikes at Peninsula State Park we would come back to the cottage and have a fire going in the fireplace almost nonstop while reading or cooking - just pure relaxation. The breeze would come through the screened in porch while we cooked and enjoyed our meal. We actually ended up cooking more and eating out less than we intended to do because we were content to just be where we were. We expected to catch a movie but never even turned on the tv - instead we brought an iPod and listened to music while enjoying the fire. Both inside and out, you can see how much work and thought has been put into the cottage by Ann and her husband. The furniture and the beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is beautiful and very large. The kitchen has everything you need. The views are amazing. We plan on coming back every fall and would highly recommend .

Truly the best of past and present.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have just returned from a 3-night stay at Ann's Cottage near Fish Creek (and so much else). Here are a few reasons we can hardly wait to return:

It's very well situated for exploring the area ... or to simply enjoy the immediate environs. And includes all the conveniences and comforts one could wish for ... plus fresh breezes and spectacular sunsets!

The cottage was light-filled and quite roomy – especially with the screened-in porch (where the wi-fi worked perfectly for a video session with my boss – an option that was helpful since I wasn't at liberty to completely "disconnect"). It's cozy and relaxing – rain or shine.

The super-comfy queen mattress, air conditioning + ceiling fans made for restful nights, while the impressively outfitted kitchen (which even included a coffee grinder for super-fresh coffee and a blender for smoothies + a dishwasher!) made food prep and clean-up a breeze.

The owners seem to have thought of everything – there's even a hammock, a gas grill beyond the kitchen door and terrifically varied collection of books and DVDs. Information on how everything works + places to eat and explore are thoughtfully provided and well organized.

Had we stayed longer (next time!) we would likely have used the satellite TV more – or taken advantage of access to Netflix, but instead, we broke out the (furnished) Scrabble board.

We highly recommend Ann's Cottage and look forward to returning!
