Tucked away on over an acre of lush paradise along the Wainiha Stream in an ancient grove of 100 ft. tall mango trees lies the Hale Wainiha (Wainiha Cottage). Offering privacy, rest and refreshment, this charming home sits on a bluff overlooking an expansive view of the entire river valley with neighboring taro farm and spectacular vistas of distant mountains. Relax and enjoy the amazing views from the deck or from your private pool and hot tub. Starry nights in the hot tub are truly magical. And the pool is cool and refreshing after a hot day at the beach. Or the perfect morning wake up. The large yard is like a botanical garden filled with exotic birds and flowers and fruit trees. Pick a Papaya or a Banana, cut some giant Heliconia flowers. The property meanders down to over 200' of private stream, feel free to take a refreshing dip. The sounds of the river and the croaking frogs will lull you to sleep. This lush valley is a serene retreat, nourishing the soul with natures greatest beauty while offering all the modern comforts of home, you almost won't want to leave the property. But when you do, it is ridiculously close to the best beaches on the island, Tunnels, Lumahai, Ke'e and Hanalei. Firstly, Lumaha'i, just 1 mile away, with its long deep stretches of soft sand broken by picturesque protrusions of lava rocks creating dramatic ocean breaks. Tunnels Beach has an amazing reef and offers the best snorkeling on the island, also surfing and the mountain backdrop creates amazing views. At the end of the road is the dramatic Ke'e beach. Besides its great snorkeling, and sunsets, this is the gateway to the amazing Napali Coast offering one of the worlds most spectacular hikes. The 2 mile hike to Hanakapia'i Beach with it's expansive ocean vistas is a 'must do', but if you can do the additional 2 miles to the Hanakapia'i Falls you're in for the treat of a lifetime. A large pool fed by a 300' waterfall, just spectacular!! Wainiha is surrounded by the best snorkeling, surfing, kayaking and hiking on all of the Hawaiian islands. You'll never have to leave this magical corner of the island.
Just 4 miles away is Hanalei Bay with its pristine 3 mile crescent beach of fine sand and perfect surf. The quaint town of Hanalei offers interesting shops, a market, and world class dining. My personal favorites are 'Tahiti Nui' (live music, good Mai Tais) and the 'Dolphin' (freshest sushi you've ever eaten). You can rent kayaks and paddle up the Hanalei river or out to the bay, paddle to Hideaways beach and snorkel, or just land at the St. Regis beach and have lunch at the poolside cafe, (sneak a dip in their beautiful pool). Also you can go Horseback Riding or Ziplining at the Princeville Ranch, or take the amazing Helicoptor ride from the Princeville Heliport. Or do it my way, just take a book and relax on a quiet beach. You'll have your private paradise waiting for your every day when you're ready to go home.

About Jeffrey Schneider
Aloha from Makua Beach (Tunnels) on the beautiful North Shore of Kauai. I am an architect based in Los Angeles. I have designed many high end resorts and casinos. I come to Kauai for inspiration and rejuvenation. I am happy to share my piece of paradise with others who appreciate beauty and the magic of nature's gifts.
Jeffrey Schneider purchased this House in 2006
Why Jeffrey Schneider chose Hanalei
I am a well traveled person and the Wainiha River Valley is the absolutely the most beautiful spot I've ever seen, About 20 years ago I fell in love with the north shore of Kauai and I decided to make it a permanent part of my life. I was incentivized to work hard so I could buy a piece of paradise, which I did in 2006. I love it here like no other place in the world and I'm happy to share this magical paradise with other beach lovers and "beauty of nature" enthusiasts!

Amazing cottage in the rainforest!
Located in the middle of the rainforest, it is a quiet peaceful place. It’s different from other parts of Kauai and for us it was enough to stay for 2 days. Explore the northern coast and have this place as your base! They’re mosquitos but hello you’re in a jungle so just bring bug spray. Loved it and had an amazing time in the hot tub overlooking the beautiful waterfalls!
Beautiful Location, Private but not as secluded as we expected from the listing
First things first, we loved our stay here! The view was incredible, so peaceful and expansive. The hot tub was great for my pregnant wife as it didn't get super hot, so be aware of that if you're hoping for a boiling soak. Though be wary of the pool deck until it gets fixed, there are spots where rotten wood has gotten very spongy.
One note is that the house isn't as secluded/remote as we had thought from the listing as there are two houses literally right next to this house. That being said, it is still private with all the foliage surrounding the property, so it's definitely still a great spot for a romantic getaway.
OUR TIPS: If you're new to driving on the north side of the island, try to arrive at the house during the day. It was a little intimidating arriving at night with the one-lane bridges and pitch-black winding roads. The entrance is also not very clear. But give it a day and you'll fall in love with the island driving =)
Jeff also provides great tips upon booking for things to do in the area, that was helpful.
We hope to return! Mahalo!
Quiet, jungle atmosphere
The location is within driving distance to shops however the house is quiet and private. The flora is beautiful & diverse. The views are incredible.
Little slice of heaven on Kauai's north shore
We really enjoyed our week long stay at Jeffrey's property. The house sits on the edge of a hill overlooking the Wainiha river below and mountain range across from you. With the regular rainfall it is lush and tropical and just stunning to sit and enjoy - almost felt a little unreal - like you were in a movie set. There are numerous seating areas outside and we were often joined by the friendliest cat you've ever met named Bobby. The house is perfect for two people - it's open concept main floor is not huge but very functional and we made use of the well-stocked kitchen and the laundry facilities and the outdoor shower (and yes there is an indoor one). While there are neighbors on either side we never saw them and with the thick vegetation they really can't see you either. We found it very peaceful and relaxing. We were there in mid-November and did have a fair amount of rain which kept us from using the pool much and the hot tub was out of service but it wasn't a huge deal to us. We really loved the area - so many different beaches to choose from, you are close to Hanalei yet still a short drive away. If you book, Jeffrey provides you lot's of great information in advance to help plan your visit to the area. We did a day trip to Waimea Canyon which was great but would say if you plan to stay here you will most likely want to focus your activities on the north shore as you are somewhat removed from the south shore. All in all we felt very fortunate to have found this place - reminded us Canadians of being at the "cottage". We hope to be back one day!
Amazing Honeymoon Stay at Jungle Cottage
My husband and I stayed at this house for 6 nights for a portion of our honeymoon trip to Kauai. The views were absolutely breathtaking and the cottage was well stocked with everything we needed! The kitchen was very well equipped and the bedroom and living room furniture were very comfortable. We also loved coming back after the beach and using the shower with the rain fall shower head! We made good use of the beach equipment available including chairs, and a cooler! The house sits in between other houses on the road, but with the thick vegetation and beautiful garden kept on the grounds, we didn't see or hear any of the neighbors and it felt very private. The property manager Koko was very sweet and stopped by a few times to deliver us some coconuts, avocados, star fruits, papayas, bananas (or plantains) from his garden which we loved! but otherwise he gave us complete privacy.
This house does sit up in the jungle and therefore there are ants and bugs around the house and we did have some ants mostly around the kitchen, but we just made sure to clean up promptly after cooking which kept them under control and they didn't really bother us. Also the hot tub was not working during our stay, and we couldn't figure out how to turn the pool jets on either, so I assume that was not working as well. This was probably the only disappointing part of our time here at this house, though since it does rain quite a bit up in the mountains, we probably only missed out on a few uses of it.
Overall, we very much so enjoyed our stay here and would definitely look into staying here again if we ever come back to Kauai!
A private Shangri-la on the north shore of Kauai
We could feel ourselves relaxing the minute we stepped onto the property, nestled on the edge of a tropical hillside in the Wainiha river valley, surrounded by the sound of the birds, the stream below, and the rustle of lush foliage. There are so many pretty little nooks that we found ourselves settling into a new one every day: the top deck for morning coffee, the table on a lower level by the pool for breakfast, the lawn chaise yet one level lower for reading and sunning ourselves, and the upper deck again for afternoon tea. We enjoyed watching the sun come up over the hill in the morning, and the moonlight lighting up the deck at night. We stayed here for one week, the second week of September 2017; we had light showers most afternoons or evening, but on the occasional clear night the stars were amazing. The natural forces of tropical climate are constantly battling to reclaim the land and rot out the wood: that having been said, the place is in very good condition. The gate into the pool area needs a little work, and when we were there the hot tub was awaiting a part, but we enjoyed the pool for refreshing dips. The house itself has everything you need in a compact space: a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable living room area, desk, sleeping area and marble bathroom. There is also an outdoor shower which we loved for removing sand from ourselves and our snorkeling equipment. The area is up on the north shore, over the 7th one lane bridge, so travel is slow, but you get rewarded with your own private Shangri-La. There are houses nearby but we didn't see or hear the neighbors. Koko, the caretaker, was friendly and helped trouble-shoot a problem we had the first day, brought us bananas and avocados off the trees, but otherwise was totally unobtrusive. Since the island is small, it is reasonable to get to most everything. We did a couple day trips to the Lihue area and to the south shore for some activities, but there is also much to do on the north shore. We enjoyed snorkeling at Tunnels, kayaking in Hanalei, going to the slack key guitar concert, checking out the shave ice and a couple local restaurants. The time of year we went, we had no bug problems: one saw only a couple of mosquitos and they were small. (We did spy a 5 inch snail in the garden though: that was impressive!) We would thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be delighted to return!
Other Activities: hiking the famous Napali Coast
