Minimum Stay 4 nights

Overview

About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

Located on the beautiful Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica and within the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Casa Bella offers you the ideal secluded spot for exploring the area. It is just minutes away from the village of Manzanillo and from the beautiful pristine beach where you will find the best snorkeling on this Coast and enjoy the Caribbean culture.

Casa Bella is situated at the top of a hill in a 1-1/4 acre tropical garden and consists of two houses. The upper section of the villa is hexagon built on 22-foot columns with large screened windows all around and a terrace which offers a panoramic view of the forest and garden below.

It is just like being in a Tree House. You are at eye level with the tree tops and monkeys, sloths, toucans and other wildlife are almost within touching distance! It has a loft bedroom, a fully-equipped kitchen and bath and a spacious living room.

The lower section of the villa, attached to the upper section by a covered staircase, has 2 spacious bedrooms, full bath and a balcony. It also has screened windows and large mosquito nets surrounding the beds.

Manzanillo is such a beautiful area. You have great snorkeling, hiking in Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Sea Kayaking, bird watching, dolphin tours, bike riding, horse back riding beach and jungle, animal rescue centres, beach relaxation, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, is not far from other towns for day visits in indigenous communities, waterfalls and national parks.

The town is a small fishing village and does not attract the tourist hype of Puerto Viejo 12.5km away. It is a real Afrocaribe village. You can also access all beaches between Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo with a day trip on bikes.

At Casa Bella you will experience the Natural Paradise of Manzanillo and the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.

We are in love (with the house and each other!)!

  • 5 of 5

Choosing a place to stay wasn't easy, but with a few emails back and forth, it was easy to choose Casa Bella for our anniversary trip. Walter was easy to communicate with, told us about the lay of the land, and how welcoming the people in the nearby village are.

Everyone was so helpful, loving to share their stories and it was great to see the local children living such a great life. There was never any pressure and we enjoyed the beach (incredible snorkeling) riding bikes and going into Puerto Viejo for an awesome dinner one night.

This was a trip to remember forever and we will gladly suggest that anyone who is looking to be away from the insanity of the city, enjoy everything that nature has to offer (early morning monkey show, followed by coffee with the toucans, then breakfast with the amazing butterflies!), beautiful walks in the jungle and on the beach...I could just go on and on.

We have been to Costa Rica several times but never had the experience we enjoyed at Casa Bella!

Great stay! Fantastic location! You are in the jungle!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 spent a week in this house. We really enjoyed our stay! The house is up in the canopy of the forest so birds and monkeys are almost right at eye level. We saw hundreds of birds including toucans and green parrots, howler and spider monkeys, and many butterflies right off the deck. Our kids found poison dart frogs crossing the walk-way on several occasions.

Expect to be woken up by bird songs and/or the howler monkeys every day of your stay. They are literally right outside the windows. There are bugs, like most of the country, it is impossible to avoid them. The beds all had nets that kept them off you at night. There will also probably be several geckos in the house, they eat the bugs so we enjoyed having them around. Our kids really liked catching them to examine.

Yari, the property manager, is a wonderful person. She lives just at the bottom of the driveway and was easy to get in touch with as her mother runs the closest grocery store, just down the road. She got us everything we needed and did a great job showing us around the property. Her English is great and that was a big plus for us.

We really didn't have any negatives for our stay but there are a few items to be aware of: Access to the house is up a steep curving driveway. We had 4WD and used it a couple times when the concrete was wet with rain. After parking, a fairly steep set of steps leads up to the houses and it might be difficult for elderly or impaired people to get up.

There was no hot water in the house, but that isn't unusual for the country. Made for quick showers! The shower in the upper house is actually outside, sort of suspended off the side of the house outside the bathroom. Kinda fun to be showering outside in the jungle while the monkeys hoot and birds fly past.

You will hear howler monkeys, quite possibly all night long. If you are a light sleeper this could be an issue. It didn't really bother any of us, but if you woke in the night you would hear them off in the distance very often. We were thrilled when they came by on our second day and spent 15-20 minutes in the tree right outside the house!

The location was great for us, commented many times since that it was our favorite spot we stayed. Manzanillo itself wasn't anything special and we didn't spend much time there. Ate at the soda next to the hostel one night and had a good meal. It was great being close to Punta Manzanillo and we hiked there on several occasions. Great spot!

Return trip-Still Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks again, Walter, for a wonderful stay in your exquisite house, Casa Bella in Manzanillo. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our vacation. This place has everything needed to feel at home away from home. I think we will make Casa Bella our go-to vacation getaway!

On this trip we explored the jungle and the area restaurants, rode bicycles and went birding. We loved the seafood stew at Maxie's, btw, and thank Walter for that suggestion.

A great experience at Casa Bella

  • 5 of 5

We looked at many rental reviews prior to our trip to Manzanillo and chose Casa Bella based off of the favorable reviews. We were not dissapointed and were pleasantly surprised to find that Casa Bella exceeeded our expectations. We have three young children and wanted them to see and experience Costa Rica jungle wildlife. The rental unit at Casa Bella is situated in the forest canopy so it offers a unique opportunity to observe toucans and other birds, not to mention howler and white faced monkeys literally almost within reach of the rental. By this I mean it is on a steep hill and on pilings so the kitchen/living area, balconies, and sleeping quarters are at canopy level. I don't think there are many other rentals in the Manzanillo area which offer this rare opportunity to spend time IN the Carribean rain forest canopy surrounded by wildlife. There were several moments where we had howler monkeys in the canopy surrounding the rental as they moved throught the area. The living area/kitchen is spacious and open, and the bathrooms are clean. The owner Walter was very helpful and was a great guy to get to know. He's an excellent massage therapist and is highly recommended. The driveway is steep and so are the stairs (from the parking area up to the house) but we had no problems driving to the house, or with our 3, 6, and 9 year olds going up and down the stairs. The beautiful beaches of Manzanillo are within walking/biking distance (we just piled into our rental car and drove the approx 1/4 mile), and Casa Bella is a great retreat that's off "the beaten path", but within striking distance from several restaurants and activities. If you want a clean, very relaxing, laid back experience in the rain forest canopy with lots of opportunities to see wildlife that's off the beaten path but close beaches and activities, you won't regret choosing Casa Bella for your stay.

Great experience...

  • 5 of 5

Casa Bella is really what its words mean in its true sense. A wonderful house (actually 2 houses) at an exceptional location (you feel like in the middle of the rain forest). Great Beaches and reefs in walking distance, a quite nice little town (except for the easter weekend) and the full rainforest experience.

Highly recommendable.

Most Wonderful Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks to the owner, Walter, for topping off this vacation, voted "BEST EVER" by my family, with wonderful massages and information about the area that led us to just the right places! The houses are just beautiful,. the gardens so lush, the nearby beach so perfect. We didn't ever want to leave the house, but did go out for so many fun activities, diving, hiking and wonderful restaurants nearby. We will return yearly to explore the area more.
