Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 4-10)

This magnificent custom designed home - The Sea Sanctuary - is situated just a hundred yards from the sand with 180 degree whitewater views. A seal colony can be found 1/2 mile to the south and exceptional tidepooling can be found directly in front of the home. A bike/walking trail runs along the ocean as well. Enjoy a solitary walk along the beach - in fact you could walk for miles and miles in secluded exploration of beach and sandy dunes. Radiant floor heat and a wood-burning fireplace can make this rental extra cozy in the winter. Elevated decks both front and rear allow for enjoyable outdoor living as well. A Jacuzzi-brand hot tub sits on the front deck from which you can watch and listen to the ocean's roar, see the pelicans glide by, and at night watch thousands upon thousands of stars.

To take advantage of the great view, the main living area in the house is on the 2nd floor, including the master bedroom, kitchen, living room and den, all with gorgeous bamboo floors. A 5x7' loft in the living room accessible from a built in ladder is a great place to play a game of cards, relax with a book or have a private conversation. Kids always want to sleep up there on the carpeted floor, and adults sometimes do too! Directly under the loft is the window seat - the most popular spot in the house - where another guest can sleep quite comfortably if desired. The 42' wall-mounted flat screen TV is in a smaller den attached to the living room. The double doors on the den close, keeping the viewing noise from infiltrating the peacefulness of the rest of the house. One or two people can sleep privately on the den's pull-out sofa sectional.

A gourmet custom granite and bamboo kitchen with double oven, All-Clad Cookware, Dishwasher, Kitchen Aid Mixer, and other appliances make cooking or baking a joy for small or larger groups.

Downstairs, you enter through the slate entry area to find a photography gallery/carpeted open yoga/exercise area which includes two futons for yet another sleeping spot. it's also a great place for kids to play if you want them to have their space separate from the rest of the group. The primary downstairs bedroom has a wonderful view facing out to the ocean. The Japanese-style tatami meditation room has been converted to a bedroom with a queen futon topped with a 2 1/2' thick memory foam pad. The room can be easily converted back to a meditation room if preferred.

The Sea Sanctuary is truly a beautiful home which can help to make your vacation by the sea very relaxing and extra memorable.

To sum up, there are many sleeping options:

Upstairs

- Bedroom - king bed

- Den/TV room - Full-size pull-out sofa sleeper - purchased from Macy's but still not the most comfortable

- Fireplace nook off the living room - queen futon and regular couch

- Window seat - comfy sleeping for one

- Loft - 5' x 7' carpeted area can sleep a child or two on the floor

Downstairs

- Bedroom - queen bed

- Tatami Bedroom - queen futon with memory foam

- Exercise/play area - queen futon + single futon

(there is also a nice queen size memory foam mattress topper available - 2 1/2' thick - which can make sleeping on one of the futons a more comfortable experience).

About Ted Seymour

Many interests including writing, photography, travel and healthy food preparation. I love spending time in the home myself too. Such a magical place to recharge, gather with people special to me, and stroll the ever changing beach.

Ted Seymour purchased this house in 2007

Why Ted Seymour chose Fort Bragg

I came to this area on a road trip in 1998 and rented a small home just behind the lot where this home is now located. I woke up in the morning and the view included a 'for-sale' sign for this land. I hadn't even been looking to buy something, but it was so beautiful here that I panicked and put in an offer that day. The next day, they accepted my offer and the rest is history. I personally designed the home and actually built it myself too, completing it in 2007. Oh happy day!

It is simply a stunning location, very quiet, yet still near to town, endless views to the north and south.

What makes this house unique

Easy beach access - no cliffs to worry about slipping down. About 100 yards or so outside the front door and you are in the sand. The house is very well stocked and maintained as the owner lives in the home for part of the year.

Discounts available for horseback riding at local stable, and sea kayaking. Ask owner for info or see postings in kitchen of home upon arrival.

Amazing beach house on the north coast

  • 5 of 5

Just far enough out of town to fully enjoy the peaceful coastal habitat and relax. Located on the bike path there is also plenty of exercise opportunities. The beach offers tide pools, soft black sand and plenty of driftwood for a bonfire.

Wonderful house - magnificent views but......

  • 4 of 5

We have rented homes in this specific area for 25+ years and our recent stay at Sea Sanctuary was our first. On the surface it is a stunning house with the best views we have ever had. Spent our evenings sitting in the front window watching the sun go down. Unfortunately the house was not as clean as we are used to or expected given the rental rate. The upstairs main bathroom at first look appeared clean and neat but pulling back the shower curtain revealed lots of mildew around the tub and a shower curtain that was filthy. Having stayed in the area so much we are aware that the water can cause lots of stains but if that is what causes the shower curtain to look so filthy then for the price of the rental a new one should be provided for each new renter - they are not expensive. Honestly Holiday Inn Expresses have much cleaner bathrooms and showers. We are cooks and found the kitchen to be a fun place to cook - had everything we needed. Again cleanliness was lacking especially in the sink - it could have used a good scouring as well as the dishwasher - not only did it have a lot of grunge in it, it smelled. If the water is the culprit for the kitchen sink and dishwasher - not sure how this can be alleviated. A little clearer explanation of the recycling of what goes where would have been a big help as we are not from CA. We recycle in our hometown but differently and I am sure we got some things in the wrong bin.

When we rented Sea Sanctuary, Ted was very helpful in answering our questions and pleasant to work with. Will not say that we would not rent Sea Sanctuary again but would certainly be more assertive in our cleanliness expectations. The house lends itself to total relaxation and rest, very calming and the setting could not be more perfect.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments Larry. I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed staying at the Sea Sanctuary and found that the home and oceanfront location provided for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The shower liners have been replaced with high quality liners and new hooks which will make removal and washing/bleaching a regular part of our home preparation. My caretaker as well noticed the dishwasher after your stay and scrubbed it to a polish. Unfortunately it had slightly clogged with food particles. We always strive to offer a high level of cleanliness to our renters and very much appreciate your constructive feedback. Hope to have you back another time.

The best vacation home we've stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had such a wonderful time staying at The Sea Sanctuary over Christmas. Ted has created such a welcoming, calm, comfortable and sweet space, which is excellent for a large group as there is plenty of space to spread out but also a large, open common area that lends itself perfectly to being together, sharing meals, etc.

The home is incredibly well appointed, complete with kitchen appliances, a state of the art sound system, games, books, comfortable (and ample) sleeping accommodations, and the list goes on. The location also can't be beat as it is right on the ocean and just outside the doorstep there are gorgeous beach walks/hikes in both directions.

Ted was also an excellent host -- he was very responsive both before and during our stay; he checked in on our group several times during our stay and proactively offered suggestions regarding the home and area; and when we informed him that something broke during our visit he was very professional and gracious in handling the situation.

Our family has stayed at many VRBO and Airbnb homes, and I think I can honestly say this is one of the best, if not the best, home we've stayed in. We hope to be back someday soon!

Glass Beach - in old days, the trash dump was in one spot on the ocean front. Now all that remains there are countless smooth pieces of glass!

Many restaurants, great hiking, many beaches, great boutiques and spas. There is a great indoor public swimming facility in Fort Bragg (CV Starr Center), tennis courts, petanque courts, whale watching, seal colonies, migrating birds for great birdwatching. Horseback riding on the beach available near the home as well. The Skunk Train does tour rides out into the redwoods including an open air train car. And many more options for entertainment.
