About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

This property is located in a rural setting surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, waterfalls, and beautiful tropical gardens. Cuesta de Piedra is a quiet pueblo where our electric bill is delivered on horseback and milk trucks pick up 10 gallon milk tanks left next to the local farmer's gates. International bird watching tours set up on the road to view the many birds found on and around our property. One of our recent guests spotted 87 species of birds just on our property (see complete list below). We are within easy walking distance of the hydro-electric dam and the drive to La Amistad and Volcan Baru National Parks is less than an hour.

Our guest suite is private, secure, and well appointed. Enter on the second level into a large living/dining/kitchen area. This level features a full self-catering kitchen, a full bath room, dining for four with a day bed that converts to a king or two twin beds.

The private balcony looks out onto a river valley headed by Volcan Baru, a beautiful 11,000+ foot tall volcano and the highest point in Panama. There is a custom built spiral stair that takes you down to a bedroom with queen bed, full bath room, and a private deck. There is a gated entry and covered parking for one vehicle.

About Lynn and Jerry Longbons

We moved to this area in 2006 from the mountains of Western Colorado and now share it with our four dogs and one cat, as well as a myriad of resident birds. We spend time gardening, socializing with other gringos in the area, hiking, biking and beach combing and boogie boarding at nearby Playa la Barqueta (and, of course, feeding the birds).

Lynn and Jerry Longbons purchased this townhome in 2006

Why Lynn and Jerry Longbons chose Panama

We purchased in this location because of it's proximity to outdoor activities here in Cuesta de Piedra as well as the nearby rainforests and beaches. It's a temperate climate that is warm during the day and cool enough to need a light blanket for sleeping at night.

What makes this townhome unique

We are fortunate to have mostly cows for neighbors and incredible bird watching almost every day. Our Panamanian neighbors are friendly and this area is clean and well maintained.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Birder's Paradise is exactly as advertised and is a wonderful base for exploring Western Panama. The apartment is comfortable, spacious and very well equipped. We aren't "birder's" per se, but loved seeing the huge variety of amazingly colorful birds at the feeder throughout the day. Thank you Lynn and Gerald for sharing your beautiful property and home with us for a few days. We hope to be back soon!

Gorgeous Property!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Birder's Paradise apartment in December of 2016, and we were delighted with the accommodations. The apartment is spacious, clean, well-equipped, and very comfortable; and the hosts are extremely friendly and helpful. The setting itself is really remarkable, with amazing mountain views and a perfectly landscaped yard. As the title of the property suggests, there are many beautiful birds, and it is a real treat to watch them at the feeding platforms in all of their colorful splendor. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.

Shangri-La with Open-Air Aviary

  • 5 of 5

This gated property is hidden away in the country-side of Volcan, although well paved roads lead you to it from David or Boquete or away from it only fifteen minutes to central Volcan for shopping. The two-story apartment is attached to the owner's home on a sprawling property that looks out upon lush vegetation beneath the Volcan Baru. The apartment is beautifully arranged. The ground floor is the sleeping quarters with wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the gorgeous scenery. Bathing facilities are also included on this level. A spiral stair ascends to the second level. There, you have a full kitchen, full bathroom (including shower), laundry area, dining area, a day bed and exceptionally comfortable recliner chairs with excellent lighting for reading. Screen doors lead to a wrap-around covered porch that lets you enjoy the out-of-doors rain or shine. If the sky is clear at night, look at the stars. We've watched the night sky around the world and this is one of the best. Your host and hostess will bend over backward to make your stay enjoyable.

About the birds: they'll knock your socks off! If you are an ornithologist, your brain will explode! They are just too numerous and beautiful to describe.

Things we did in the surrounding area included visits to the Finca Dracula orchid preserve, Janson Coffee Farm Tour, and Haras Stable Tour.

Lynn and Jerry (and Zues, Juno, Loki & Tucker) will make you feel like part of the family.

Peaceful Tranquility!

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to find this beautiful place that was exactly what we were looking for. The accommodations were beautiful, fully equipped kitchen, tropical grounds, wonderful hosts and an amazing view on the upper terrace! We so enjoyed having our delicious morning coffee on that terrace! Even though we were not official "bird watchers" we loved seeing all the different colored birds flying by and the many calls that they make. There was even one that sounded Iike the static on the radio! There's so many things to do and experience in the local area just a short drive away. Highly recommend!

Birds, flowers, and green vistas

  • 5 of 5

Lynn and Jerry's wonderful home was our first taste of Vulcan, and it could not have been more delicious. Our friends, who have stayed here a few times before, knew how much we would enjoy sharing it. They gave us the lower level with its own private terrace, while they used the pullout King on the upper floor. All was very safe and comfortable for 4 adults.

The views and the birds were a treat. We saw fiery-billed aracaris every day, hummingbirds and flycatchers, and warblers of all colors and sizes. The view of the baru and the verdant river valley greeted us each morning. The temperature was perfect, the mountain air clean and breezy.

Lynn and Jerry could not have been kinder and more helpful. We would definitely recommend this piece of heaven to friends, and should we return to the Volcan area we would return here.

Owner's Response: We were so happy to host you and are even happier that you had such a good experience here and in the surrounding area. We think you did more than about three other guests combined. We loved hearing about your adventures every day and are so glad that we were able to contribute to your stay and tour of Panama. Thanks for taking the time to review our property, or as they say here in Panama, "muchas gracias"!

From David airport: exit left from airport and go 3.4 km, turn left at the stop light and drive past McDonalds to the next stop light where you will turn left onto the Pan-American highway. Stay on this road for about 21 km to the town of Concepcion where you will turn right onto the Via Volcan. Look for the green sign indicating 'Volcan'. Drive another 20km to Cuesta de Piedra and turn right. Just before you get to the turn for Cuesta de Piedra the road will curve to the left and you will see a church on a hill surrounded by radio towers straight ahead. You will pass some very brightly colored houses on your right and there will be a road that t's off to the right. Turn there and go another 2km until you see a large green water tank on your left. Our house is entered at the drive just past this water tank, turning to your left. There will be a large black iron gate and a sign 'Residencia Longbons'. You're there! Coming from Boquete you will drive towards David and turn right at the Terpel gas station onto the new road to Volcan. Follow the signs to Cuesta de Piedra and notice that there are kilometer markers along the side of the road. Our place is located on the right just before the 2 kilometer marker. You'll see a cream colored column and that marks our driveway. It's a sharp turn coming from that direction so you'll need to swing wide to make the turn. Honk or use the intercom and we'll open the gate.
