About Pam Murphy

I'm a person who values privacy, quiet, contemplation and nature. My friends are for life. Having sold a small retail food business, I now own a small garden design/installation business which is the thing I have always wanted to do. As a state certified master gardener, I also volunteer my time in many ways and in many communities. I split my living year between Atlanta, GA and MountainView House, where I hope to live full time one day. I enjoy most outdoor activities, but especially, hiking and bird watching. I'm an avid reader of history, natural science and literary novels and journals. I'm learning to use my telescope more effectively. I was once addicted to Breaking Bad and The Wire (probably still am) and I really enjoy well written serious dramatic as well as seriously funny TV and movies. I'm a native of Chicago and return often to the suburbs there to visit my mom (she's 98 :) who lives independently in the home my dad built in Northbrook, IL. I hope to stay active and independent all my life and I believe that the key to that is to always enjoy and have fun at what you do even if you could make more money doing something else.

Pam Murphy purchased this house in 1998

Why Pam Murphy chose Topton

I bought this beautiful place after spending a July 4 weekend in the Snowbird Mountains and seeing only 1 other person on the lake there. I began searching a bit farther south in The Nantahala range of the Smokies, where there were/are even less people, although after 18 years, there are a few more folks who have caught on to this magic place.

After two years of searching, this home came on the market and my realtor called me to come up and see it, even though it was for sale at a price higher than I had budgeted. One look out the western windows and I knew, THIS IS IT. I made an offer that day and have never looked back for the past 20 years. For me, it's not even the house, it's the place, itself, where I always feel closest to nature and her living things. The scene is always changing and always beautiful and haunting. There is always peace to be found here.

What makes this house unique

My home is situated on two (mostly vertical :) acres at the top of a mountain. Most of my very few neighbors are seasonal, but I live here on and off, year 'round. It is the incredible quiet and peace that I find here and yet I am only 140 miles from my home in Atlanta. I feel that The Nantahala is another country entirely, so close to Nature as it is and rugged enough that not that many people live here. I also enjoy the face that the road leading to my home is like a private driveway, really, and when the trees are in leaf, you would never know my home was there. When the trees are bare, my home is more exposed, but the mountain views are so much more dramatic! The spring and late fall are wonderful times to visit for this very reason but not many people take advantage of this fact and so I happily return for longer visits, especially in November, when it is still fairly warm and in the spring during bird migration. This is definitely a spot for serious birders or for anyone who enjoys the color and song of migrating birds. Also, bald eagles have returned to the lake - a wonderful indicator of a healthy environment. Travelers should know that this is not a rental property per se, but a private property that is sometimes rented. Therefore, my guests will find quality furnishings and art and probably things that I should not display because of their portability. I believe in trust and the honor system, though, and have found through the years that most people are honest and trustworthy which gives me great hope. I have been disappointed only 3 times in 18 years and I consider that a good record. Guests need only behave as they would in their own homes to have a good experience for themselves and for me.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just got home :( we didn't want to leave. I washed all of the linens and everything we used. It is a bit cooler at night and in the morning but it was pretty hot during the day, it rained every afternoon which cooled things off a good bit. The stars were amazing as always, so breath taking! We saw Saturn the first night, it's always so unreal to see the rings!!

We love your house so much Pam. Thank you so much for another great trip. You are so blessed to have that little piece of paradise. We were talking last night at dinner about our New Zealand trip back in January and all the wonderful things we saw and experienced over there, it was a trip of a lifetime but still nothing can come close to having the effect on us that our home on Mountain View Drive does, the place is truly magical. We love everything about it and leave a bigger piece of us there each time we leave. The nature, the birds, the peace, the stars, the sunsets and sunrises all hold such a special place in our hearts.

My fiance and I made plans to stay here during the 2017 total eclipse and we couldn't have picked a better place! It was a much needed retreat from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta into the wilds of the Appalachians. The views from the deck are spectacular and pictures simply don't do it justice, whether it's the way the mountains look right as the sun sets, the way the Milky Way is clear and visible over the trees at night, or how beautiful the mountains look as the mist rises up over them in the morning.

I loved the visits from the local birds, as the house has several feeders filled with seed placed in areas where you can watch them as you eat breakfast or have a cup of coffee. The house is beautifully kept and decorated, and it had plenty of amenities to keep anyone comfortable and happy.

I would love to come back and visit again, as I found this the perfect place to "recharge" and just relax, surrounded by nature.

Wonderful Remote Mountain Destination

  • 5 of 5

The website pictures do not accurately reflect how awesome this place is. During our stay we rafted the Nantahala River and rented a ski boat at Lakes End Marina. Both were great experiences. Pam is a wonderful host who ensures that her visitors have a great time in her beautiful home.

The right place at the right time

  • 5 of 5

This place was just perfect to restore sanity into our busy lives. The stunning views, the friendly birds, the gentle clouds moving fast on the horizon...every gift from Nature was just right.

And the house was comfortable and clean, Pam really loves and takes care of it and she always makes sure her guests are happy and have everything they need. Thank you!

What a great place run by a great owner!

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin? Well, before we even arrived we had detailed information from Pam about all the many attractions that existed in the area and where to access them. Then when we arrived and walked through the door for the first time, we were initially almost stunned by how beautiful, functional, clean, well appointed, and so comfortable a living space it was! What a treat to be able to come back to it every evening after a full day of hiking, rafting, or just exploring the region. And watching the sunset from the spacious deck with a glass of wine was always a highlight of the day! It's very apparent that Pam takes great deal of pride in this property, and sincerely derives joy in sharing it with other nature lovers.

Thank you Pam!

The pictures don't give justice to the property!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful week escaping the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. The property was the perfect size for our family of 5 and we enjoyed the remoteness of the location atop the mountain. The views were breathtaking and we enjoyed the immense amount of natural light that comes through the huge windows on three sides of the property. The homeowner is very accommodating and is very easy to work with. We enjoyed the wide variety of books that nicely adorned the main living area as well as watching the birds enjoying the bird feeders that are on both corners of the house. The house was clean, neat, and very nicely decorated. None of us wanted to leave. Suggest driving to the property for the first time while there is still light as the house is atop the mountain. However, the drive is not intimidating at all after the first few times. Lots of great places to hike and enjoy the scenery every where you look. We highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a one of a kind location that is nestled away. Hope you enjoy this place as much as we did.

Amazing opportunity!

  • 5 of 5

There are not enough wonderful words to descirbe this home, it's owner Pam, and the Natahala Area. It's only been two months since our stay but we talk of it almost daily, as does our 2 1/2 year old. We are early risers and had the wonderful experience of listening to barred owls calling for their mates, Something the toddler is now obsessed with!

Not only do I support the other reviews I've read, as they are all true, but the fact that this wonderfully remote & peaceful home is 45 minutes from EVERYTHING. Literally. My husband is not one to sit still and most vacations are spent on the road with different accommodations every few days. The mountain view home allowed us to have daily excursions (NOC, Franklin Gem Mines, Ashville, Lake Natahala, AT Firetower hike, Tsuli Fontana Damn & Tail of The Dragon, Joyce Kilmer Forest) and return home every afternoon/evening to relax and enjoy the amazing area.

Memories were made there and a piece of our hearts will forever remain!

My home is located at the top of a mountain in a sparsely populated area, The Nantahala, above Nantahala Lake. The primary view is of the Nantahala Range. Groceries and hospital are at minimum, 15 miles from home. I always shop for groceries before I drive up-Ingles in Franklin, Murphy and Andrews. WalMart in Murphy or Franklin. Small local store at lake sells basics at elevated prices. My pantry is stocked with basics, should you forget spices, etc.

My home is centrally located for hiking (AT and Bartram) and birding (Audubon Important Bird Area or IBA), lake access dock is 1.5 mile down the mountain. Small restaurant is 1.5 miles on lake, Lakes End Grill.
