About this property

Icarus House - Amazing views, trails, art and beauty just 4 miles from town

Surround yourself with the quiet serenity of nature, incredible views and original art by local and national artists, in this downstairs apartment, of The Icarus House. We are located just 3.8 miles (a quick 10 minute drive) from downtown Brevard. Situated on a private, gravel road with few homes, you will feel like you are in a state forest as approach the house. This is the downstairs apartment, fully furnish and equipped. Situated high on Bracken Mountain and nestled up against thousands of acres of Pisgah forest and the Bracken Preserve, you can hike and bike without ever having to get in your car. Enjoy a glorious morning sunrise as you sip your coffee and prepare your breakfast in the fully outfitted kitchen with all the tools needed to cook to your heart’s content. And, no need for bottled water here as the tap water is delicious, crystal clear, high alkaline mountain water from a 350’ deep well on the property that has been tested for purity. For outdoor chefs, the weber gas grill awaits on the outdoor patio.
This full sized, two bedroom apartment was completely renovated down to studs in 2016 with an eye for comfort and relaxation. The new bathroom features an oversized walk-in shower with a rain head shower head. Beautiful knotty alder wood cabinetry and ceilings are accented with rich, dark granite countertops. A large screen, 68’ television with soundbar and DVD player means you won’t miss your favorite shows but other entertainment options abound. A full selection of fun, vacation-friendly DVD’s will keep you laughing.
For folks who like games and puzzles the cabinets are filled with options including Scrabble, Stratego, Chess, Backgammon, cards, and loads of jigsaw puzzles. There are trails accessible from the property as well as access to the Bracken Mountain hiking and biking trails a mile up the road. We even have streams and waterfalls a short hike from the house. For those who need to work remotely or just want to keep in touch with the latest news on-line, the apartment has excellent Wi-Fi nearly all the time (occasional weather issues may slow things a bit but that is rare.) Cell phone coverage is always great.
For chilly days and warm ambiance, enjoy relaxing in front of the gas fireplace as you stretch out in the spacious living room. And speaking of relaxing by the fire, the wood burning fire pit on the property offers a lovely way to wind down the day around a crackling fire with your beverage of choice and maybe even some S’mores.
For nature lovers, local wildlife abounds, drawn by the woods as well as the wildflower gardens on the property. From hawks, woodpeckers and hummingbirds, to turkeys, deer, turtles and more, nature is on your doorstep. This five- acre property is also planted with flowering trees and shrubs throughout, and if you are lucky enough to catch the delicious, organically grown blueberry bushes in season, you can simply pop them in your mouth right off the plant. A serene moss garden abuts the flagstone patio leading to the apartment’s fully separate private entrance.
Located on the lower level of the large cabin, this apartment has dedicated parking and a separate entrance off a patio overlooking the valley and the lights of downtown Brevard. If the out-of-state owners happen to be in town and you are looking for company, who knows, you may just end up joining them on the deck for some music and a local brew or glass of wine.
Lastly, we know that for dog lovers, they are important, much loved members of your family and we welcome them here to share your family vacation. Our only requests are no puppies and you clean up after your furry loved ones. We prefer dogs stay off the furniture but just in case they forget , we keep dog blankets for the leather couch and chairs in the closet.
We welcome you to Icarus House and know that once you have experienced staying here, you won’t ever want to leave!

Lovely Stay in Brevard
Absolutely lovely fall weekend at Icarus House!!! The home was exactly as described. Beautiful views, spacious lower level apartment, well appointed, and very comfortable. We enjoyed watching the sun rise each morning while drinking coffee on the stone terrace. Would absolutely stay here again!

Lovely place
There is so much to recommend about this place. It is spacious, very clean, and is well stocked with kitchen utensils, DVDs, games, towels and linens. The view is as advertised, the grounds are beautiful and there is lots of hiking a very short distance from the house. Surprisingly we didn't encounter much wildlife but did see some deer, pheasants, and chipmunks occasionally. The property managers get an A+...they respond to messages very quickly, answer their phone, and are fantastic at following up. They clearly want to make this a pleasant experience for you and they do. The only drawback was the wi-fi was inconsistent which affected some phone calls and we were unable to get TV channels for most of our trip. We were expecting that to some degree given the mountain location but it is worth mentioning. The road up to the house is bumpy and somewhat steep - my front wheel drive car made it just fine in October but I would bring a AWD vehicle in winter.

Peaceful Oasis
Wow, did this property exceed our expectations! If you are a nature lover and looking for peace and serenity this is the place for you. Each morning I took in the sunrise over the expansive mountain views from the huge balcony. The only noises heard were the sounds of nature, making you feel like you are miles away from the rest of the world and the only person on earth. The property has multiple places to wander or just sit and enjoy the great outdoors. Comfortable Adirondack chairs abound around the spacious fire pit area and even inside the vegetable garden where we were free to help ourselves to any produce. There are trails to hike and explore, and my husband loved the axe/knife/arrow target. Inside was comfortable, spotless, and had everything you could possible need, even weights and yoga mat for the exercise enthusiast. As someone who loves to cook I was impressed by the amount and quality of the kitchen utensils. It was just my husband and I on this trip, but there is plenty of space for a family or another couple. Highly recommend!!

About the host

Coming from Florida, we had always vacationed in the Western North Carolina mountains to escape the summer heat while our children were growing up. We had friends here and we especially fell in love with Brevard when our youngest son went to Camp Greenville YMCA camp and we had time to explore on our own. The decision to find a peaceful retreat coincided with his decision to attend Brevard College after high school.
Inspired by a family loss, after our children left the nest, we purchased this home as a peaceful, healing retreat where our scattered family members from around the country could gather for vacations and holidays while bathed in the beauty of the mountains. It has been just that and now we want to share it with others as well. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful mountain oasis, our island in the sky.

Why they chose this property

We loved this property from the minute we heard about it. In fact, it was the only house we actually personally visited and ultimately bought. We loved that it was a log cabin tucked into the woods, high on a mountain yet only 4 miles from town. We loved that it had trails with streams and waterfalls close by and more to be discovered. We loved the beautiful flowering trees and plants with a multitude of gardening opportunities begging for attention. We loved the privacy and serenity of this quiet place. And we loved that we could take this home and renovate it with love and vision to create the place of comfort and beauty that it is now.
