This loft-like one-bedroom apartment(420 sq ft) has a unique location in the heart of Lourmarin, officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France. (see link below for information on Lourmarin)
'Le Loft' overlooks the picturesque village square, faces south, and is very light, with high ceilings and large casement windows - wonderful for discreet people-watching. There is a cosy, quiet double bedroom (queen-size bed - 160 cm) which has a small but adequate ensuite bathroom with shower and a craftsman-made fitted closet. The large living/dining room is elegantly furnished and very comfortable. Adjacent to the living-room there's a generously-equipped gourmet galley kitchen behind a room-divider.
Located above one of Lourmarin's several chic cafés and sheltered from the street by a leafy elm tree, Le Loft is situated in a historic building that was previously one of the few grand patrician houses of the village. It has striking architectural features - very high ceilings, and decorative mouldings with cornucopias of fruit and flowers and cherub faces.
We have furnished the apartment with an eclectic, yet harmonious assortment of antiques and bric-à-brac, contemporary furnishings and objets d'art, and craftsman-built cabinets and furniture. This apartment provides comfortable accommodation for two people (plus a child or young person)in elegant surroundings, while losing nothing of the slightly faded charm of this beautiful property.
On the square below, guests have the choice of three café terraces, for breakfast, lunch and dinner too. There are also four fine restaurants within 100 yards. Although the square is pleasantly lively, the effect inside the apartment is of a gentle hubbub. There is very little traffic on the street below, and on weekends it is closed to motor vehicles.
Incidentally, the windows of the apartment and the café terrace below are THE place to be for people-watching, a popular sport in fashionable Lourmarin. The Loft offers a very French experience.
Lourmarin is of course officially classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages in France' - a classification made by the French Tourist Board which goes to only around 140 villages in the whole of France. It's about 25 minutes from Aix-en Provence, 35 from Avignon and St Remy/Les Alpilles. In short, it's a pretty good base for touring and exploring the whole of Provence and especially the Luberon Region.
The village is typical of the region, with many houses either in the local golden stone or stuccoed in various shades of beige and ochre. There is a Renaissance chateau, a Protestant church and a Catholic church, which reflect some of the history of the village and the area.
Lourmarin lies at the foot of the Luberon hills, which are covered with a typically Mediterranean mix of pine, oaks and other trees. The highest point of the Luberon is around 4000ft. Around the village are old farmhouses, fields, vineyards, cherry orchards and olive groves. It is a lively and popular destination both for people from other parts of France and for foreigners - hence the 15 restaurants.
In terms of practicalities, the apartment is ideal for a couple, and can also accommodate a child (we can provide a crib or a child's bed). There is everything you need for cooking gourmet meals in the kitchen. Guests will find a washer and dryer about 100 yards away, in a laundry room shared with one other rental apartment.
We have lived in Lourmarin almost for ever. Joseph is American, Elizabeth is British, and our children are....French. We love this village!
Joseph & Elizabeth purchased this apartment in 2008
Le Loft is well-placed in the centre of the village, above the Café de l'Ormeau. It is unusual for a village apartment in that it is very light, with high ceilings and large windows.
The great thing about Le Loft is that opportunity it offers to participate in village life. The café terraces are where Lourmarinois gather to swap gossip and tips, and they happen to offer good food and wine too. There can be a hubbub of conversation, but it's rarely more than that, and the bedroom gives onto a quiet side street anyway.
We stayed in Le Loft for a week and could not have enjoyed it more! The apartment overlooks the village square where there is always a lot of activity to watch and enjoy. Although this does provide some noise, the apartment gives the ability to substantially buffer that when you don't want to enjoy it. The furnishings are very nice and very interesting. The kitchen is well set up and equipped. We would highly recommend Le Loft for anyone interested in a stay in a beautiful Provencal village with easy driving access to places ranging from Avignon to Cassis.
Absolutely loved our stay at Le Loft in Lourmarin! Such a cozy place to call home for a week, and an absolute delight to return to each day after sight seeing. The pics on the internet made it look lovely, and it was even more lovely in "real life!" We were warmly welcomed by Elizabeth and escorted to Le Loft from a meeting place at the edge of the village. We spent much time exploring Lourmarin, and surrounding villages with the help of a tour guide book that graces the coffee table in the living room of Le Loft. spent many a morning hour, and later an evening hour or so enjoying coffee or a glass of wine at the little table right in front of one of the tall windows, which was thrown open to allow the breeze to sweep through, and to soak in the beautiful view. Many choices of restaurants and cafes as well for lunch and supper, a couple of them right outside our window. A grocery store just down the street at which we bought fresh strawberries most mornings! And mmm cheese and baguettes...! do go to France, and do go to Lourmarin, and do stay at Le Loft!!
Having spent a week at “Le Loft” in Lourmarin, we found we miss the excitement of spending each night in an unfamiliar town, searching for a place to park, arguing about which direction we might find a hotel, then engineering our luggage into a room large enough to fit only a bed and a desk. I feel a little guilty lounging on Le loft sofa in a comfortable room larger than most of our hotels. We did have a wonderful time, and and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Joseph, Elisabeth & the dogs.We recommend this apartment for anyone interested in visiting Provence and having a great experience. The apartment is conveniently in the center of Loumarin, strolling distance from restaurants, bakeries, shops, and the outdoor markets. From Loumarin, we visited many small, cute, and interesting villages. We also hiked several trails to enjoy the outdoors and scenery.
Wine-tasting, gourmet restaurants, Roman Monuments, medieval churches & abbeys. (day & night 'petanque' court), opportunities to meet local people.
