About Courtenay Museum

The Courtenay and District Museum, a regional museum serving the Comox Valley, operates the Capes Escape, donated to the museum by the late Katherine Capes. Throughout the year, we welcome visitors from around the world to this wonderful, well-kept home.

Courtenay Museum purchased this house in 1990

Why Courtenay Museum chose Courtenay

Creating a vacation rental--the Capes Escape--was the best way to honour the donation of a home and seven acre property while welcoming our many visitors to the museum and the Comox Valley.

What makes this house unique

The Capes Escape was completely refurbished in 2009, preserving all original elements of the historic home while providing comfort with renovations and refurbishments including modern kitchen, bathrooms and appliances.

The Capes Escape has proved to be a popular gathering place and getaway for families and friends.

Occassional events such as receptions and writers' workshops make it even more exciting.

Trails and tall trees surround the seven acre property, which is only 5 minutes from Downtown Courtenay, 30 minutes from Mt. Washington and 20 minutes from the Comox International Airport.

Charming and spacious country home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with our daughter, her husband and their three young children. The house was well equipped, child friendly, and spacious. Clean and well maintained. Thanks for such a great opportunity to experience staying in a heritage home.

First time renting VRBO, glad it was this one. Awesome.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time renting a VRBO. The process was simple. Picking up the key was easy. The staff were great to deal with.

The house was incredible. Being a heritage home it is quite unique. The renovations were tastefully done, yet include modern appliances. Lots of space inside the house, even if there were three couples you could still have some privacy.

I don't know if all VRBO are similar but there were plenty of supplies, dishes, soaps for dishwasher, laundry, etc.

With only one shower it could be a bit of a squeeze getting ready if you're on a timeline, but just plan ahead.

The property is wonderful. There were a few rabbits around and lots of deer. Being in town and you still feel like you're out in the country. The drive to downtown is only a few minutes at most.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. It's as good or better than the pictures allude to.

Lovely character home on beautiful acreage!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful stay, at a most charming historic home. Set on 7 beautiful acres where the deer come to visit often. Very well appointed, comfortable, peaceful home in a great location close to all the restaurants, shops and trails. While staying, we enjoyed downtown Courtenay with it's many wonderful shops and restaurants, the Courtenay River Pathway, downtown Comox and Comox Marina and the Blackfin Pub, and Cumberland area. It is also close to Mt. Washington for skiing in winter or hiking the alpine in summer. We enjoyed mountain biking at Seal Bay, took a ferry to Quadra and Hornby Islands for some amazing hiking / biking, and Rathstrevor ocean front park in Parksville. Everything is so close! The staff who look after the property are amazing!, so helpful, accommodating, and friendly. We would HIGHLY recommend Capes Escape for a weekend, a few days, or longer - a fabulous place to recharge your batteries, unwind and relax, while being close to everything.

This was a quiet, private home and park like yard, yet so close to drive to everything you needed

  • 5 of 5

This character home is truly a joy to behold! We couldnt believe the incredible bright, huge windows in every room that opened and let so much sunlight and fresh air in the house. Detail has been paid to everything needed for us to have a worry free vacation. The kitchen is newly renovated with all modern appliances and placed so conveniently so more than one person can work and enjoy enough room which is rare in vacation homes. We found lots of space for family in each room. The views from each room is spectacular and if anyone is looking for peace to rest and replenish themselves, then Capes Escape is truly for them! They cant go wrong. We found the Courtenay Museum staff incredibly easy to deal with when booking and they were more than helpful in answering any questions we had during our stay. They take personal pride in their property and it shows in the care they take of you as their customer. Just that alone would make us return as it is so nice not to have the "hotel treatment". Capes Escape makes you feel special and when you leave you feel like you are fulfilled. Thank you so much!

Amazing and Picturesque, Combined with Incredible Value

  • 5 of 5

I almost hesitate writing a review because once the word gets out, it will likely be impossible to get a booking - this VRBO will be such a hot commodity!!!!!!!! You get an incredibly spacious main level with 3 large bedrooms upstairs. We had so much fun cooking with family in the great kitchen as they sat around the island/peninsula chatting with us. The 3 different living areas gave all 6 of us some "space". The washing and dryer were invaluable for our 10 day stay. Set on 4 acres, we felt so calm and relaxed, yet the Comox Valley Parkway allowed for a quick commute to anywhere we wanted to go. Loved the walking trails surrounding the property. The staff at the Courtenay Musuem office couldn't have been more helpful, just terrific to deal with. And I still can't believe the price. For what we got and what we paid - UNBELIEVABLE VALUE!!!!! We highly recommend this VRBO. Thank you Courtenay Museum. We'll be back!!!

A Fine Experience at Capes Escape

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Capes Escape with a group of 6 and we had a fine time in this spacious and beautifully restored heritage home. The Museum staff were ready for us, the house was immaculate and fully equipped, and our four-night stay was both a great experience and a good value. The fact that the house is sited on several acres of forest, is another bonus - this is not your average rental home but a step back to the good life in an earlier era, but will all of the modern amenities. .

Thank you again and we will be coming back soon.
