About Karl Scherer

I'm a retired decorating contractor. I live in the house 7 months out of the year, and go South to Costa Rica for the winter, because of a very bad leg break 12 years ago.

In Costa Rica I manage rental unit in Jaco Beach, where the surfing is great, and out your front door. Renting my house in Vail and Costa Rica are my sources of income at this point of my life. I try very hard to make ever guest as happy as possible, so they keep coming back. Over 50% of my guess are returning year after year, especially in Costa Rica.

Karl Scherer purchased this house in 1990

Why Karl Scherer chose Northwest

It's easy in and easy out, with all the things you need to have a great stay!

What makes this house unique

It's my personal home half of the year. So it looks like someone is still living there. Personal pictures and what not. The closets and the draws are empty

and the main part of the kitchen fridge is also cleaned out, but the door has

all the condoments and stuff for you to use if you choose. I try to make it

feel like home, away!

Great for ski trips with family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with 2 adults and 3 little kids for almost 2 weeks and had a blast! The house is just perfect, very spacious (the kids enjoyed the extra playroom and tried out the fitness equipment :-) ), and the hot tub was a pleasure after a day of skiing in Beaver Creek. Since we stayed over Christmas, Karl was so kind to leave us his light-up Christmas tree and lots of decorations. As can be seen in the photos, there is even a piano, so be sure to bring some music. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back!

Perfect for families

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The home was very comfortable for three couples; we enjoyed having the three bathroom with one next to each bedroom. The kitchen was very well equipped! We would definitely return!

Karl was a great host. He maintains the home well. He was around a lot in the beginning taking care of some maintenance - his daughter had just had twins so he didn't have time to attend to it before we arrived. When it was done, he was gone and we didn't see him again. He is a personable guy.

One thing women may want to know -- there is one hairdryer.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Fun stay for 2 adults and 2 children for a few days in the snow! Karl was super helpful and easy to coordinate with. The location is fabulous... close to Beaver Creek and Vail. The house was spacious and had all the amenities we needed to have a comfortable stay. Great time and we will be back!

Nice place - owner made us feel uncomfortable though

  • 2 of 5

Yes, this place was large, had nice beds, and a hot tub. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for the weekend. HOWEVER, on the 2nd night the hot tub broke and after 2 days of trekking in and out of the condo with the electrician, the owner realized that it was just a short circuit, but blamed us for "using the hot tub every day, it was more use than the hot tub is used to". There were only 6 people staying in the condo, I would assume if you rent a condo for 6 people, the hot tub could handle that number of people each day. After the hot tub was fixed, the owner proceeded to show up, UNANNOUNCED EVERY DAY, sometimes twice a day to "check in". He would use his own key, look around the condo, ask us questions, and quite honestly, make us feel uncomfortable, accusing us of leaving the condo messy when leaving for skiing one day. We left the condo in a tidy condition ready for the next renters, there was no reason for the owner to check-in every day. We also received no compensation for not having a working hot tub for every day that we stayed in the condo. The location is nice, but if you're staying here for the hot tub or privacy, BEWARE - you may not get what you are looking for.

Owner's Response: These 6 young ladies over flowed the tub somehow, which cause the motor and heater to trip. It was difficult to find, but I did on the second day. In the mean time I had to enter the unit. I was very distubed to find my HOME getting trashed out. This rental is my home first and a rental in the ski months ONLY! Everyone else respects this, and I've never had a problem in the past. The main problem came when they wanted a major refund for the hot tub being out of commission for 2 and a half days, when they caused the problem in the first place. I've been renting my place for many years and have never had people that were this unrespectful to someones elses property. I'm sure glad this was an isolated insodent, otherwise I'd have to go back to my regulars, and not use the Internet market to fill in the blanks. I guess there's one in every basket!

Great rental!!

  • 4 of 5

We were so happy to find a rental with a hot tub near our destination. The pictures don't do it justice for sure. We had three families with two kids and there was room for all of us. I would definitely stay again! The kitchen was great to cook in. Next time though I will bring a fan for my bedroom. There's no AC and I need moving air. We were all used to fans, so the one he had there wasn't enough. The shower head in one bath wasn't the best, but it works and there are two others. I am picky and that's all I could come up with :-) We will definitely be staying there again. 3 bathrooms was a must and we were so happy to find 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in a place this wonderful. Definitely to be recommended and fit for a return trip :-) The owner met us when we got there. He was very nice & answered our questions about the area.

Pictures don't do it justice!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful condo, much much nicer than the pictures show; there is a lot more decoration. Dual shower in master, very comfy home, clean, huge office could fit more people, very safe, lots of natural light, small round dining table and bar with stools. Hot hot hot hot tub :) Oh, and the bus stop is right outside the neighborhood on HWY 6. Karl was a great host, stopped in to show us everything and made us feel welcome even though this is really his home that he leaves to rent out.
