About Rebecca Raab
We are 2nd generation ex-pats living in Oaxaca on our "eco" ranch. We have been here full time for 16 Anthony's parents original pioneering and their 25 year stay. We take pride in retaining a rustic "Refined Zapotec" adobe construction and local artwork throughout the compound. We are fully integrated with our village of San Pablo Etla and always have great relations with the locals. Village fiestas are ongoing through the year, and we participate in appropriate fashion. After nearly 50 years of our family being here, we can certainly offer a solid, safe and knowledgeable Oaxacan Experience.
Rebecca Raab purchased this House in 1965
Why Rebecca Raab chose 3a Sección San Pablo Etla
It took many years to assemble one of the few remaining, privately owned, large tracts of natural land in the foothills north of the city of Oaxaca. We feel both lucky and honored to be the stewards of this beautiful place. We offer both small and large accommodations in two different houses. Between the two we can accommodate up to 15 people with full services including meals. We raise our own agave plants for producing mezcal in the old our on-site still. Traditional Corn-squash-bean crops are planted each year also. We protect and raise many animals; both domestic and wild (in the outer lands). Bird watching yields up to 250 species. Long walks in the foothills offer the unique experience of easy immersion into the natural world of Oaxacan ecology and beauty.
What makes this House unique

Great nature and cultural getaway with small kids
It was exactly what we were looking for - the casita is well layed out private space with all amenities on a large property. The kids (4 and 6) could roam and play with the (very friendly) animals.
There was a daily cleaning service if we wanted it and the rental came with a arrival day meal and a fully stocked fridge. We spent a fair amount of time leisuring at the pool at the main house, which we pretty much had the run of. The broadband connection / wifi was decent, allowing remote database & VPN access, which was hugely helpful as work sadly followed me on my vacation.
Views of the mountains and the valley below were impressive. The entire property consists of 40 acres running up into the foothills of the mountains behind, making for stunning hikes through native brush and algarve plantations (for mezcal). A strong rural /outdoors sense prevails despite fairly close proximity to the city.
We had rented a car and the road to and from the airport is fairly well described and of good quality. We made nearly daily runs downtown to take in the culture, markets and great buzz of Oaxaca city. There were a couple of trips further afield to Monte Alban, Tule, Teotitlan, Tlalucula and Danzu on the textile/mezcal route, all within easy reach.
Valued above all was the engaging nature of the owners - Tony & Rebecca were respectful of our space, yet willing to share a couple of social moments, broadening our understanding of the general environment and day-to-day happenings on Oaxaca. Especially appreciated was the tour of the Mezcal production site and the tale behind it all. Alas we missed out on a jam session by Tonys local band, the Bodega Boys. Next time!
Families with kids fit in perfectly at Casa Raab, and these folks made the most of it. There are lots of wide open spaces around the houses for children to run and play, and of course the pool is great for the whole family.
Winter in Oaxaca
We had the great fortune to spend two months at Casa Raab's "La Casita" and it was everything we could have wanted. The house is wonderfully maintained and perfect for the two of us. The grounds are beautiful - full of flowers and flowering trees, making it perfect for bird watching. The patio and pool are gorgeous, and we had full use of them. We spent many hours lazing by the pool, just enjoying the fabulous weather and the incredible scenery. The house is situated on 40 acres, so there is wonderful privacy and lots of area for hiking. We still miss the sunsets from the hill!
The property is everything it is said to be and the hosts, Tony and Rebecca, are great. They were welcoming, helpful and very knowledgeable about the area. And most especially - they were fun! Casa Raab is perfectly situated for exploring Oaxaca City (a very impressive Spanish Colonial city) and the area around it, which includes many ruins and crafting villages. We had our own vehicle, but Tony is a wonderful guide, if needed.
We loved our time in La Casita and it truly felt like home. We will always treasure getting to know Tony and Rebecca. We look forward to returning.
Oaxaca City is located at 5,500 feet above sea level. This high mountain tropical location creates a nearly perfect year round climate, with low humidity and cool nights.
Oaxaca towns and villages still retain the spirit of Old Mexico, with fiestas, music and laughter in the air. Oaxaca itself is full of restaurants, musuems, galleries and colonial architecture. The three subtropical Oaxacan valleys have breathtaking natural beauty, ecological diversity and rich cultural history. Trips into the mountains will take you into world famous ecological zones.
Other Activities: golfing, petting zoo, animal rescue, mezcal tours, rock climbing, hiking, eco-touring
Golf: We have a nice 9 hole 'country club' within 20 minutes of Casa Raab. It has big locker rooms with steam baths, an Olympic size pool, and a small high-quality restaurant. Clubs and caddies are available. It costs about $50 us for 18 holes.
