About Sally Schwyn
I am a retired school teacher and college administrator in love with the western North Carolina mountain communities around Boone. I spent my childhood in Ohio, raised my family of 5 children in Michigan and lived and worked in Chicago for 20 years before retirement. As a mid-westerner I especially enjoy our wonderful mountain climate; warmer in Winter, cooler in Summer and so so beautiful in Spring and Fall.
Sally Schwyn purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Sally Schwyn chose Foscoe
I have always been attracted to older homes, with large trees on the property, and enjoy returning them to their intended grace and beauty. We bought this tired, older log cabin in 2005 and spent 3 years restoring it to its current condition. I love being an Inn Keeper and sharing my home and its beautiful setting with our guests and my family when they can come for a visit. In addition to the upper cabin with its 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, etc, there is a separate apartment on the lowest level which is where I live when I am not traveling.
What makes this Cabin unique
This property used to be a Christmas tree farm - the trees now tower over 70 feet and provide a year round green buffer from the local roads that make getting to points of interest easy and convenient. I like sitting on the hill next to the cabin and looking at the profile of Grandfather Mountain. It's a great way to start the day with a cup of coffee and an even better way to unwind after a busy day of mountain activity or just sightseeing our beautiful mountain area.

Convenient, clean, comfortable and roomy
We enjoyed our stay for APP family weekend! Owner very friendly and helpful.
Great Location and Ample Space
The cabin had lots of space, 4 bedrooms with large beds and two bathrooms. It is great for large groups who want private sleeping areas. The cabin is located just off 105 so it is convenient to get to Boone or Banner Elk. The owner of the property lives on the bottom floor in an attached apartment which did not create any problems but should be disclosed in the description. The cabin is in a neighborhood with lots of houses near by. This cabin is great for families but for larger groups who plan to stay up late and use the outside area there are probably better options.
Red Bear Cabin is Lovely
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the lovely Red Bear Cabin, which is warm and fully equipped with all the necessities of home. It gave us the opportunity to poke around Boone, NC, and then return to our cozy cabin situated in the midst of some glorious scenery. The owner, Sally, is a delightful hostess who told us about the best places to see in the area. We will return as often as our travel plans allow.
Cozy Christmas Cabin!
We rented Red Bear Cabin months in advance, literally "dreaming of a white Christmas" with the whole family in the mountains. El Nino prevented the white Christmas but we still had a lovely time because Sally, the owner/manager made sure we had eveything we needed! The cabin was comfortable, clean, well-stocked, and met our needs very well. We had three families and two little boys - took Santa and all our gifts with us, as well as groceries for an entire Christmas dinner. The big country kitchen made it easy to prepare a Christmas meal - turkey and all the trimmings, which we ate around the big kitchen table! We cut down a tree (although Sally had put one up for us as well) because we wanted the experience of cutting one!
The cabin in centrally located between Boone and Banner Elk, and easy to get to without traversing scary roads. It is convenient to anything you want or need - from grocery stores to ski resorts, hiking, tubing, recreation and shopping of all kinds.
The pictures do not do this cabin justice. It is a real charmer. And Sally herself is it's best asset. She felt like a member of our family . She lives on site, so she was there to let us in, to answer questions and handle anything that came up.
We would totally recommend this cabin .
Red Bear Cabin
We had an excellent time during our stay at Red Bear Cabin!!! Ms. Sallye and Mr. Michael were super host and everything was exactly as described. I especially enjoyed walking around the property and taking pictures while the kids loved playing outside in the beautiful yard. The sunflowers were my absolute favorite ... I have never seen such huge flowers before!! The kids also enjoyed the fire pit...s'mores 2 nights in a row!!! My parents also enjoyed their stay and are already talking about our stay next year!!!! I'll be contacting you soon, Ms. Sallye!!!!!!
No comforts here!
This was our second year spending a family vacation in this cabin. Last year we were able to ignore the paper-thin walls and floors since everything else was enjoyable. This year, not so much. The storm windows were not lowered and so we had to go around "winterizing" the cabins very old windows. The doors had such bad weather stripping that you could see large gaps of light around them. And to top it off, the thermostat was "touchy" and refused to work properly during a very cold spell (-10 windchill!). We had 3 very small children in the house and yet the owner did not return our call or text about the thermostat. The only warm spot for the kids was sitting close to the fire. Bedtimes were a nightmare due to the cold. She needs to put a little maintenance and effort into the cabin to make it comfortable again. I would only recommend this cabin in the warmer months and to groups with no young children.
I am sorry this guest did not have an enjoyable time at the cabin. They were there when the outside temperature dipped to a low of 7 below zero, unusually and extremely cold - setting local records. I did respond to their call regarding the thermostat and did get it working properly. The bedrooms are very warm if the heat vents are opened and by choice they had a fire in the fireplace most of the time. I was not informed of the cold bedroom problem. I appreciate the concerns expressed and am making every effort to make the cabin a more cozy place to stay - even in the coldest of times.
Perfect just off-highway location with no steep driving, half-way between Boone and Banner Elk. Close to river rocks - swimming, fishing, skiing, tubing, sledding, hiking, Grandfather Mountain, gem mining, ASU, galleries, antiques, shopping, restaurants and more. Other Activities: Hawksnest family zip-line and tubing center, largest in the East is only 3 miles from the cabin. Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery House, Blowing Rock, Mast General Store near-by. Ski: 15 minutes to Sugar Mountain skiing, 15 minutes beyond that is Beech Mountain. 5 minutes to Hawksnest Family Tubing Center and 20 minutes to Appalachian Ski Area. Winter hiking and fishing close by as well.
