Cove Cottage on Corea Harbor

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Corea Harbor is unique in that it remains a truly authentic fishing village. The 42 moorings belong to the fishermen and it is rare to see a sailboat during any time of the year. Known for its beauty, visitors from around the world come to see what painters such as Marsden Hartley saw in this rugged landscape and are overjoyed to find that time has changed almost nothing. Sitting at the very end of a 3 mile long peninsula, Corea is surrounded on 3 sides by water. The only year-round business that exists in this unique harbor is the lobster fishery, the same pursuit that has been practiced for the last 14 generations.

Cove Cottage sits on the edge of the harbor and has a clear view of the business at hand. The entire harbor is lined with docks that assist each family in lobstering. While most other harbors have lost their waterfront to development, Corea fishermen have always retained a right of way so that their families can maintain access to their trade. Directly across from the cottage are four of these docks and they are worked from daily. From the cottage's front porch guests can have an intimate view of the business of lobstering as well as watch the boats come and go.

The cottage is not just your ordinary weekly rental. Many of our first time guests request a second week and are usually disappointed to find the cottage is already rented. Many return the next year with the more appropriate two weeks reservation and are always truly happy at the end of their stay. For 2014 the cottage can be rented only from Saturday to Saturday July 5 through September 6. All other rentals, beginning in May and ending in October require a 4-night minimum. Most couples are tickled to find such an intimate snuggery away from the crowds of Bar Harbor and other commercial destinations.

Another great attraction is bird watching. Behind the cottage is a large osprey nest that is easily observed from the back porch. Besides this resident bird, Corea is home to an astounding number of wild birds. There are resident eagles that perch on the rocks off the cottage as well as a treasure trove of seabirds that call the harbor home. Loons, cormorants, blue herons, several kinds of ducks, and a wide variety of seagulls are observed daily. For the more intrepid, watching the puffins on Petit Manan by renting a guide for the day is the way to go. It should also be noted that the road into Corea is surrounded by an enormous heath that has been deeded to the Petit Manan Wildlife Sanctuary, and they have designated the heath as a bird sanctuary. Birdwatching trails exist throughout.

Meticulous about a clean and well-appointed house, we want our cottage to be appreciated by couples and singles who want a first class rental that can be a comfortable home when not out touring. Because some of our guests are allergic to pet hair, we unhappily cannot allow pets.

Our guests have come for the incredible beauty that exists on this part of the coast as well as the quiet and privacy that Corea provides. There is not one store in Corea. For the past two seasons we have enjoyed a lunch-on-the-wharf very near the cottage which has been a friendly spot to get a top-notch lobster roll or a lobster grilled cheese sandwich accompanied by a spectacular view. All hope it returns for the 2014 season! Chapter Two is an artists' cooperative specializing in books and hooked rugs, as well as the arts and crafts of local artisans. Outside of fishing there is no commercial traffic. This in itself attracts those from a more complicated world, as life in Corea seems to take one back in time. We hope you will choose to spend time here with us. The Weeks

Could not be more pleased....

  • 5 of 5

We found the cottage as depicted and well equipped. The area within walking distance of the cottage was tranquil and picturesque. We were pleased to be a little distance from Bar Harbor, while still having what we considered easy access. Acadia National Park is magnificent. The owner of Cove Cottage, Carmen Weeks, lives next door. She was ever-willing to help; but, was never intrusive.

Perfect Getaway !!

  • 5 of 5

Cove Cottage is the perfect getaway. It is well appointed and comfortable, with all the amenities one needs. The accomodation is quiet, and far from the crowds and traffic of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The local area is fun to explore, and the activity of the lobster boats in the harbor is fascinating. We highly recommend this cottage and plan to return.

This is a lovely, well equipped cottage in a great location for exploring the local area. It is absolutely perfect for a couple and the owner, Carmen, was extremely friendly and helpful.

I would definitely consider staying there again.

Complete immersion and seclusion.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a perfect getaway. Corea is secluded at the end of the road, literally. Watching the quiet activity of a lobstering village around you really immerses you in a new environment. Walking to the Corea Co-op to buy lobster for dinner, right off the dock, is memorable. The cottage itself is extremely neat, well designed, comfortable, and private. The nearby Acadia National Park is a great resource when feeling the need to get off the peninsula, but really, Corea is a serene place to be busy doing nothing.

A Quintessential Maine Experience

  • 5 of 5

What more could one ask for than a well appointed cottage with a front porch view of the working harbor. We've been coming to this are for over 30 years, and Corea has maintained its "Down East" character. Carmen and Carnes are lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome. Be sure to ask to see her amazing quilts and buy some lobsters fresh off the boat at the local Co-op.
