About Howard Wampler

We live 8 months/year at Ten Bay. We built our house, Pink Pause at the edge of the property and use Mermaid Point as a guest house. We are active in Potcake (Island Dog) rescue. We may have puppies rescued usually from the local dump during your stay, along with our own dogs. You are welcome to stop by and play with puppies and have a drink anytime.

Howard Wampler purchased this house in 2002

Why Howard Wampler chose Bahamas

Most private home at Ten Bay. Secluded beach where you rarely see another soul on this 1/2 mile beach. Kayaks included in rental. Can be launched from boat ramp on property.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy a slow pace on this un-crowded island. It has the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. You can enjoy solitude or welcoming 'winter residents' at the Library every Tuesday morning for coffee. There are enough restaurants for variety and a movie theater in Governor's Harbour for entertainment. No traffic, not even a stoplight. A few grocery stores with enough variety to get creative in the kitchen, and fresh fruit year round. Bring a soft crate and take home an authentic Bahamian souvenir: a 'Potcake' puppy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Wayne and Dianne,

We had a wonderful stay at Mermaid Point and enjoyed meeting you. Thanks for all the helpful advice and chats during our holiday. You really looked after us. With the perfect weather it is easy to see why you spend so much time in Eleuthera. We felt very much at home in your Mermaid Point home. (Some of the best sleeps I've had in years.)

All the best to you both,

Great location, very nice house.

  • 5 of 5

This is great little house centrally located on the island. More than adequate for 2 people. When we arrived there was soft music playing and all the ingredients for a nice tropical drink were waiting for us, including 2 cold beers in the fridge! Within 2 hours of our arrival my husband caught a large snapper right from the gazebo for dinner. We enjoyed using the kayaks and my husband frequently fished from both the kayak and the gazebo. The snorkeling wasn't great for us because the wind was often blowing from the West during our stay and the water was choppy but that's Mother Nature. On those days we travelled to the amazing beaches on the other side of the island. Ten Bay is close and we enjoyed walking there to catch the sunsets on most evenings.

The Wamplers are a very interesting couple. We enjoyed a drink with them on our last night there and met their girls, Daphne, Sassy, Martini and Olive. We enjoyed chatting with them and appreciated the information they shared regarding the island and how they ended up there.

The house is very private and the Wamplers are friendly but they aren't intrusive whatsoever. In fact we didn't even know they were home for most of the week.

The house has a decent supply of pantry items including seasonings, sugar, oil and some liquor. All paper products and soaps are provided. This is really nice because most grocery items are extremely expensive on the island and who wants to shop when you're on vacation? There are plenty of towels, including beach towels, and beach gear (chairs, umbrella, cooler, etc.) available to use.

Regarding the gnats and the wifi: We used bug spray once or twice but the wind kept the bugs away for most of the week. The wifi was only sketchy one day otherwise it worked fine. We only used it mostly to check the weather. We try to leave the technology at home on our vacations! There were more channels available on the tv than we have at home. It was nice for catching some ball games at night and getting my Walking Dead fix.

Eleuthera is a great place to visit if you're looking for a quiet, laid back vacation. The beaches are amazing and the people are very friendly and relaxed (nice change from the States). There is no traffic and we never felt unsafe. Renting a car couldn't be quicker or easier. Mermaid Point is a great place to stay if you're looking for a quiet, peaceful vacation.

Mermaid Point, southern of Palmetto Pt on the Bay side, 2 min walk from Ten bay Beach

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, gorgeous spot...super nice and helpful owners who live just down the hill from the house, which overlooks the ocean. Great to have kayaks, super snorkeling off the cliff jump right outside. There is also an easy entry to the water on the other side of the property. You know within ten minutes whether Eleuthera is for you. It is NOT Atlantis, but rather a rural, gorgeous island with wonderful people, lots to explore.

Another Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time visiting Eleuthera and second time at Mermaid Point. We had a fantastic holiday swimming off the point and soaking up the sun on 10 bay beach. We did a road trip to Spanish Wells and took in the Christmas evening Junkanoo in Tarpum Bay but the rest of the time we were quite happy just to enjoy the beautiful views from the house. There is a new grocery store in Savanah Sound which was really convenient as it is only 10 minutes away.

We stayed for 11 days and look forward to returning again. Thanks so much Dianne and Wayne.

Lovely home with fabulous snorkeling

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay. The ocean is fabulous and very worth braving the access ladder needed to get to the water. Just an FYI here- it's much easier at high tide. The snorkeling was some of the best on the island-most days we didn't leave, instead just took the kayaks out exploring for more reefs, of which there are plenty. The house is clean and cool and lovely. They owners considerately leave large bottles of shampoo and conditioner, as well as soap, and there are seasonings included with the fully stocked kitchen. No need to pack beach towels, they are provided, as well as some beach chairs. A great place to stay.

Great location for wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing house, Mermaid Point. It is located at the top of a

hill overlooking ten bay. There are 3 Kayaks available for use ( single

and double ) and you can walk down the hill and get into the water. The

marine life is amazing. Dianne and Wayne are wonderful owners. They are

just down the hill on the other side.

If you need something or have questions about the island they will be

more than happy to help. If you are lucky you will be visited by the

dogs they take care of.

The water is usually calm on the Caribbean side and it's only a short

drive to double bay if you want to swim in the Atlantic. Savannah sound

is just down the road for fresh fish. My only complaint is we had to

leave after 11 wonderful days. We will be back.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We appreciated our welcome gift of rum after a long trip. The home was exactly how it was presented. Lovely furniture, comfy bed, views were outstanding and our visit with the owners was a blast! The Internet was a bit sketchy but they warned us of that. I would highly recommend this home rental.

The nearby beach was one of the best on the island.

The kitchen has everything you could want and there are lots of staples there from previous guests. This saves a lot of money not buying spices and other items you only need a little of.

They also keep left over sunscreen and misc items and had big bottles of shampoo and conditioner so I could pack lighter next time.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us! Paul and Tracey Lambrecht Lanesboro, Minnesota
