Our family has lived on the island for over 30 years. We built this home as a team and love the quiet location where we can hear the tide rushing by from the deck and all sorts of birds calling.
Po and Eric Powell purchased this house in 2002
Kanaka Bay is situated between the University of Washington Marine Preserve at False Bay and the rugged West side waters of San Juan. A little of everything. Look it up on Google earth and see why we bought this property.
Herons, Eagles crying and building their nearby nest, quiet, deer everywhere, fox, quail, sunrises and sunsets with a pink glow of the Olympic Mountains. Freighter traffic. Mt. Rainer from the kitchen window. Open views and lots of sun. Moon rises and sets.
We rented this house for a family reunion/vacation for 9 of us ranging in age from 12 - 70. We all loved the house, with its beautiful view of the Bay, abundant wildlife sightings and the large great room where we could all hang out together. We found all of the rooms comfortable and the aesthetics, including the many wonderful quilts, very warm and welcoming. It was very clean and well maintained, with lots of helpful hints on things to do on the island. I would definitely recommend this place.
The house was well appointed, everything worked, and the grounds and view were a pleasant surprise. The kids played in the spacious yard, and we enjoyed the huge kitchen and deck views. Spotting Orcas from the deck allowed us to head to South Beach for a spectacular whale showing. While the property doesn't afford direct beach access, we loved the secluded location and short drives to Cattle Point and Lime Kiln State Park. While no help was needed, we appreciated that Po checked in a couple of times to see how everything was going. It was helpful that the house included lots of everyday items that a family might want: movies, sports equipment, maps, coffee grinder, and so on.
We had a group of nine at the house. Plenty of room for all. House was very clean, kitchen very nice. Quiet neighborhood with terrific view of water and Olympic mountains.
We had a small (2 seniors, 3 children, 4 adults) family vacation in August and stayed here. The house was as described but the neighbors around this property are NOT accommodating in regards to use of their public beach area. Master bathroom sink has rusted out drain closure that broke while we were there and the owners expected us to repair it, per a phone call with Eric. Included in our rental fee was a cleaning & safety deposit. The morning of our departure, we spent several hours cleaning above and beyond what was required. Upon our departure, we were told that there was damage and we would not be receiving our security deposit back. Owners stated that we had broken their gas stove, which we used when their home lost power FOR AN ENTIRE DAY and the house got cold. With 2 babies under 2 and our 75 year old mother, the stove was needed for heat. There were instructions about how to use the stove, and despite these and also the fact that we have our own gas stove at home and are familiar with how they work, it would not light. My husband lit the pilot by hand, taking extreme care when doing so. When I informed the owner that we would need to see a legitimate repair estimate as well as photographs of this alleged damage, she agreed. One month later, we received a hand written note as the "estimate" along with a claim that we got fingerprints on the glass surfaces among other ludicrous claims and our security check minus $200 for “repair” and 5 hrs of extra cleaning, which doesn’t add up because they had other rentals checking in long before 5 extra hrs of cleaning could have been accomplished. Advise for those who choose to stay here: photograph the entire inside/outside of the property prior to departure to ensure that false claims can’t be made against you; don't touch anything; eat all meals outside at the picnic table or else your security deposit will be used to clean the kitchen.
We loved your home, it was perfect for our needs. We had fun cooking for 10, having happy hour on the deck and spending hours around the kitchen table. The sunshine and light, airy open floor plan made for such a comforting place to return to after 2 days on the water kayeking. I appreciated the well equipped kitchen, the lovely fresh flowers were appreciated.
All kitchen utensils of high quality. Very family oriented. Ultra clean. Flowers nice touch as were the books about the area. Orcas are for real and can see and hear from deck. Master bath could use a soap holder about shoulder high. Wonderful place.
San Juan Island has been voted the #1 tourist destination in the United States for 2013 by numerous vacation companies. Our 2 national parks are extraordinary and the pods of Orca whales that can be seen daily make this an excellent destination for travelers.
