Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Architecturally designed, beautifully reconceived, gem of a house. An old tramline cottage completely renovated and expanded. One of 14 cottages around a village green, Highfield Grove is a unique spot.

Suited to a family, a couple who need an optional office or studio or even a single person in need of a zen retreat. There is an open-plan living room, large kitchen, master bedroom with ensuite half-bathroom, a twin room and a loft-room. There is a full bathroom with bath and shower and finally a third living space that can be closed off with a sliding door for guest-room/office.

Underfloor heating throughout. State-of-the-art Kitchen equipment. Custom-made furniture and eastern antiques. A landscaped patio with hot outdoor shower, olive tree and herb garden.

And for those so inclined, we can organize private yoga classes at the house, massage therapist, beautician/hair-stylist, facialist given advanced notice. The house is lightfilled with large picture frame windows and skylights. It has clean-lines and architectural features throughout, open fireplace and bespoke kitchen... all to be featured in the Sunday Independent Magazine this month (February).

The house is impeccably quiet. A feeling of Irish countryside even though it is a ten-minute Luas ride to the fashionable pedestrian Grafton Street, the hub and centre of Dublin City leading down to Trinity College with its Book of Kells. All that Dublin has to offer is right on the doorstep and our management team can help you with anything you may need for your stay in Dublin City.

You can bike around, taxi around, bus, Luas or drive around with very secure on-street parking right outside the door. Highfield Grove is beside excellent shops - Dublin's top butcher and fish monger's (Lawlor's), a health food store with organic vegetables and specialty foods, Fothergills bakery, and Wild Lily Cafe with great coffee and croissants, not to mention the great restaurants five minutes from your door...

Palmerston Park with beautiful landscaped grounds is a minute's walk with its great wooded playground for children. River-walks, mountain trails, ocean-strolls and urban-life all in a 20-minute radius. This is a perfect Dublin retreat from which to embark on the Dublin adventure you would like to create.

About The Owner

My name is Dolores. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, I now live in New York. I have lived in and travelled to many places around the Globe, from Tahiti to Egypt and in between and know what it is to have a nice port of entry and a nice bed to sleep in. I am a writer and film-maker and lover of life. Inherently in tune with the needs of a traveller, I take great pleasure in providing a beautiful place to stay in, in my native country, native city, and native village - Rathgar.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006

Why The Owner chose Dublin

I grew up in Rathgar. When choosing a place to have as my home when traveling back to see family and friends it was important to me to be near the Dublin I had always known. I have always liked to live in the centre of a city whether it was in London, Paris or New York and this house is 2 miles from the hub of Dublin in a beautiful leafy setting with lovely parks, restaurants and shops. The house itself attracted me because it was old with plenty of character and yet in need of complete refurbishment that would allow be run wild with my creativity. The setting of the house, one of twenty cottages around a village green set off from the main road, is completely unique to Dublin and I loved the tranquility and old-world feel of this environment. Every time I turn off from Highfield Road and down into that village green, my body relaxes. The calm is a much needed tonic for life in Manhattan.

What makes this cottage unique

Very important to everywhere I go is to have a place nearby where I can buy fresh, healthy food, a place where I can have a cup of coffee and a croissant, and somewhere to have a lovely walk. Rathgar village and Upper Rathmines Road offer all that anyone could offer in terms of satisfying gourmet cravings and Palmerston Park, 2 minutes from the house, is beautifully landscaped with a wonderful children's playground in the shelter of its old oak trees. All public transport is available right outside the door as well as free parking. And there isn't a quieter spot in all of Dublin. Particularly appealing to me is watching the trajectory of the moon across the master bedroom picture frame window at night, hearing the birds in the morning, leaving the front door open on a sunny day and wandering in and out of the house to the village green with my friends or my cup of coffee, saying hello to the neighbors who have been their for generations, walking in my bare feet around the house with the floors warm from the sun coming in through the skylights, showering outside in those rare summer days, having feasts at the big kitchen table with family and friends and snuggling up in front of the fire with my loved ones.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Dolores,

I was meaning to write to you after our stay and rant and rave about our stay in you fabulous place. We, myself and my 3 pre-teen children thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your flat and our time in Dublin. It was my children's first time to Ireland and I loved the experience of walking up to the bus stop, hoping on and being in Central Dublin in less than 10 minutes. Listening to the conversation and the Dublin brogue. Your flat accommodations were more that comfortable. We all experienced great sleeping accommodations, the shower was fantastic with the overhead faucet and having enough hot water was never a problem with 4 people taking showers daily. I cooked a hardy breakfast every morning that began our day before heading off to explore Dublin and often did not have to eat again until Dinner time. That was so very beneficial due to the high cost of eating out in Dublin. I did eventually rent a car and had no problem parking in front of your apartment, and without the added cost of what a downtown hotel would charge me for overnight parking, I might add. With our GPS navigation device we found our way around town without incident and that itself is miraculous for those of us that drive on the wrong side of the road. We found your apartment a warm and very comfortable place to return to after a long day out and about. We loved all the windows and the bright, modern and airy feel. We were completely surprised at the interior after arriving from the Airport and our long flight over from the Bay Area. From the outside one would not expect to see the interior so wonderfully remodeled with the open, light filled, comfortable layout. My children enjoyed the freedom of playing ball on the grass in the court yard and that is not possible when staying in a large hotel. I have and will continue to highly recommend your apartment to anyone traveling to Ireland in the future.

All the Best!

Great home base in Dublin!

  • 5 of 5

Very happy with our choice of this cottage for our 5 day stay in Dublin! It feels like a secret hide-away - a village green ringed by tiny cottages tucked away on a quiet side street behind much grander houses in Rathgar. The cottage is small, but with a very clever and modern architectural design making great use of the compact space - lots of natural light and comfortable for eating, sleeping, and lounging for our party of 4. Easy walk to the shops at the main intersection in Rathgar - particularly recommend the SuperValu market and Bijou Restaurant. Also a good base for day trips out of Dublin - easy to park a car here (though preferably a small car!), and easy to get in and out of town without dealing with downtown traffic. We never figured out the bus system but catching taxis at the main intersection was also generally easy, except during the height of morning rush hour, or when it was truly raining (as opposed to drizzling, which doesn't count). Colm was a great host, giving us useful information on check-in, and also checking in on us mid-stay to make sure all was well.

Cozy, modern cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five enjoyed our stay in this small but comfortable cottage, renovated in a modern industrial style. My husband and I slept in the master bedroom, my mother in the loft (precarious), our 5-year-old in the twin room, and our 2-year-old in a pack'n'play in the extra living room. The cottage is renovated cleverly to make the best of a small space. The rooms are bright with large windows (bedrooms, including the extra living/pullout bedroom, have blackout shades). The kitchen had all the necessary amenities. There were plenty of books and toys and a large outdoor yard for the children to enjoy, with excellent playgrounds nearby. The hosts were welcoming and attentive. The bathtub and toilets were very clean. The commute to Dublin was convenient. We loved the cozy, working fireplace. Something to consider is that the bedrooms and bathrooms are small, and the loft room can only be used by someone responsible and agile. But overall, it is a great space for a family. We had a wonderful time.

Wonderful home, relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time staying at the modern cottage in Rathgar. The home was beautiful, well kept, comfortable and had everything you would need. The location was great - just a short distance from Dublin city center - easy access by bus, even with 2 kids under 5. Rathgar is extremely cute, beautiful streets, grocery stores, great cafes and restaurants and very friendly neighbors. Our 4 year old had great fun playing with the older kids nearby.

Our stay here made for a very enjoyable and relaxing time. Would certainly love to return one day. Thank you!!

Fantastic property, Great location

  • 5 of 5

The house is exactly as described in the photos. Wonderful renovation of a charming cottage. 5 minute walk to Rathgar where you'll find groceries, The 108 (pub), Revolution (pizza), and Howards (brkfast). All make you feel like part of the neighborhood. Very friendly people here. Dolores and Colm are great hosts....this is a place that was built for her family and we get to stay here...feels like someone's home, not a rental property (and that's a good thing).

Uber and Halo (the Irish Uber) service the area and busses are not far for the 15 min trip into Dublin City.

Love this place....

JULY 2015

Convenient and centrally located for travel in and around Dublin. A large supermarket and many quality shops are within walking distance including a butcher, bakery, and seafood shop should you have the time to cook meals. The green right outside the front door is perfect for kids to burn off some energy while close enough that you can keep an eye on them. 2 adults 3 kids 10 to 15 yrs old. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that one of my uncles was a regular at the bottlers bank pub only half a mile away.

Lovely holiday experience

  • 5 of 5

We are very grateful to both Dolores and her father Collum for helping us enjoy a wonderful Irish holiday. This property was very well suited to our needs, and we really enjoyed local Rathgar. Three adults and two children, we lived very comfortably in this cozy space.

Collum was particularly kind and available for questions. He even brought our son a Christmas tree and ornaments with which to decorate. We were so moved by the kindness and giving spirit of the Irish people, our neighbors among them! Our trip, wedding, Christmas, and overall travel experience were exceptional.

Thank you for tho great find.

Take care!
