About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

The adobe walls of Tierra Madre are cool in the summer and warm in winter. This spacious home was designed with the comfort of guests in mind. An adobe house feels like no other. Heavy beams (vigas) span the ceilings in the traditional manner while thick plaster coats the walls. Warmth is provided by radiant floor heat. Imagine living as the Pueblo Indians have for thousands of years, but with all of the modern conveniences. Yes, you can even bring your own notebook computer and enjoy the free wi-fi.

Tierra Madre is north of town, just 20 minutes from the ski valley and five minutes from town. You will feel like you have come home as you snuggle under down comforters and build a fire in the Kiva fireplace. Everything is provided from an espresso coffeemaker to comfortable chairs for those afternoons when all you want to do is read a book.

The outside hot tub on a private patio is the perfect place to watch shooting stars dart across the dark skies of Taos. For those of you who can't get enough of the great outdoors an adobe walled flagstone patio overlooks the vast expanse of BIA land (Indian Pueblo land). Only an occasional cow can be seen from this private getaway.

It is obvious why the famous painter RC Gorman chose to live right across the road. This is a place of special beauty.

About Jim Yates

After years of owning our own business we decided it was time for Chapter Two(or three). We lived in Tanzania, Guyana and Ukraine working for the US Peace Corps for about 10 years. As of January 2014 Jim is back in Taos and Anne commutes from Taos to different Peace Corps location around the World on short term assignments.

Jim Yates purchased this house in 2003

Why Jim Yates chose New Mexico

We vacationed in Taos in 1990's and fell in love with it. We returned time and time again until We bought a house in 1999 and moved to Taos in 2000. We loved the year round beauty of the mountains, the artists, and fantastic sunshine. We finally found the perfect piece of land to build a custom home and built a home with the views, comfort and privacy as our first 3 priorities. It has BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs)land on 2 sides for maximum privacy. It is located between Taos and Ski Valley , close to everything yet it is a relaxing private place.

What makes this house unique

Sunset views, mountain views. Sitting on the flagstone patio sipping on my morning coffee, soaking up the sunshine and the beautiful views. The perfect way to start the day.

After a great day of skiing, hiking, hitting the river, biking or taking in some new galleries I love to wait until after dark, turn out all the house lights and go out to the Jaccuzzi and just sit in the dark with the jets off and watch the bright stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a joy to be in such a relaxing setting. The adjoining BIA lands gave a sense of privacy. As we walked into the house, our trip around the world began with original art work, furniture and decor of various nations. The well equipped kitchen made cooking a snap. From sunrise to sunset, each window framed a beautiful landscape. Before bed it was hard to decide whether to listen to quiet jazz through the Bose sound system or float away in the hot tub gazing at the galaxy.

Thank you, Jim and Anne for sharing your authentic Taos home with us. Your prompt response to any query was outstanding. We loved staying in your immaculate, beautiful home. We hope to return whenever time allows.

Favorite place to stay in Taos

  • 5 of 5

Sitting on the back patio drinking a perfect margarita with the pinion wood burning in the chiminea while the sun sets in the western sky over the plateau is about as good as it gets. This is the second time I've stayed at Tierra Madre and I will be back again next fall.

Serenity on Steroids

  • 5 of 5

Tierra Madre is the place you want to be in Taos. The property is located off scenic Hwy 522 and offers great views across the sagebrush to the nearby mountain ranges. The calming effect of gazing out over the great expanse from a lovely, wildflower filled patio cannot be overstated. Showing off our photos from Tierra Madre evoke words such as peaceful, serenity and just plain "wow" from our friends and family back home.

Jim, the property owner, had complimentary tickets waiting for us to the community fundraiser "Chile Challenge and Battle of the Breweries" event which was a fantastic experience for us. We loved every minute of our stay and would definitely return should we travel this way again.

Excellent Place

  • 5 of 5

The house was immaculate. We were a group of 7 women celebrating a 50th birthday and we enjoyed the house so much for a 4 night stay. The rooms where comfortable and the views from the windows were spectacular. The kitchen was full of the utensils and supplies which made cooking easy. If you have food left over, you can leave it for the cleaning staff or a local shelter will benefit. I needed information on restaurants and hiking so I called Jim and he and his wife gave me excellent suggestions. (Ojo Caliente was a great spa, btw.) The group was talking about other celebrations and reasons to come back! Don't hesitate, this is the place!

Can't say enough about Tierra Madre - beautiful home in a spectacular setting. Perfectly situated for getting to Taos Ski Valley or into town. Incredible views (and complete privacy) from every room and the hot tub, interesting and well displayed art throughout the house. Hope to return someday!

This is a prime location to stay at located in between Taos and Taos Ski valley. Close to Taos for groceries, restaurants, and shopping, yet also close to Ski valley for skiing and forest hiking. Close but so nice with the quiet relaxing location It has BIA (federal land) on 2 sides so there are vast views of sunsets out the back windows or from the patio. Great views of the sunrise and the mountains out the front windows.
