or counting stars in the open sky over the ocean!
I love Davis Park and am always working to keep this charming and cozy house updated and maintained every year so that it is always light and airy, and in perfect condition.
The Bird House is a wonderful home. It is meticulously kept and exceptionally clean. The home has very beautiful touches, such as all of the birdhouses and complete sets of dishes, cups and silverware - not mixed and matched. The owner is very accommodating and even willing to meet you at the ferry with the cart to help you if she is on the Island. :) I would definitely rent again.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the "Birdhouse" in Davis Park late September, 2015. We had a family wedding to attend for the weekend, and it couldn't have been more perfect! The house is compact, but very comfortable, clean, and had all the amenities one would want for a stay at the beach. It is very conveniently located, close to the beach, within a comfortable walking distance from the main dock and casino restaurant, but still quiet and away from all that activity. We love Davis Park, it is a special place on Fire Island, and we would definitely recommend the Birdhouse, with or without children!! And I forgot to mention the delightful collection of birdhouses!!!! They are quite unique and give the house a lot of personality!!!! We loved it!!!
The Birdhouse was perfect for our little family getaway. The open living/dining/kitchen area was bright, spacious and airy with plenty of seating and room for my 2.5 year-old daughter to play. She also loved all the children's books! And the birdhouses! The bedrooms were comfortable. The kitchen was well-equipped, and my husband was very pleased with the gas grill. We loved eating our meals outside on the spacious deck.
Of course, the best part is being steps away from the beautiful beach! We love visiting Davis Park in the summer but never stayed there before. It was amazing to set up our chairs, umbrella and toys first thing in the morning and just wander to and from the beach at whim. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit again next year.
This is our second time staying at the birdhouse, most recently to celebrate a significant birthday for a long weekend. We were two families with 8 year olds who loved walking the boardwalks to the beach and the bay and spotting both deer and foxes. The beach at Davis Park is fantastic and peaceful-- perfect for boogie boarding and kite flying both. We enjoyed a birthday dinner at the restaurant Casino where the food was excellent and the children's menu a hit.
The house itself is cozy and fully stocked. Its only a few steps to the open panorama of the beach. The large patio and grill were perfect. We prepared excellent food the whole weekend and found everything we needed and more in the kitchen. The outdoor shower was a big hit for us city folk! Lots of beach toys, chairs and an umbrella. The kids had a great time trying to decide which bird house was their favorite. We were tuckered out every evening and slept deeply.
The owner has thought of everything you could need to make your stay relaxed and enjoyable. Excellent tips on grocery ordering and transportation options.
We cannot wait to go back!
The Birdhouse was the perfect place for us to stay for the week. It is immaculate, well-looked after, and filled with every sort of amenity you could hope for: comfy beach chairs, beach toys and games, a large grill, and a washer/dryer to boot. It was such a nice place to stay, we would love to come back again. In addition, the owner was so thoughtful to include a binder covering everything from resources on the island to historical information. We wish we were there right now!
I wish I could give this six stars! My family (Mom, Dad, young adult daughter, and me--son entering his Sophomore year of college) just returned from a wonderful week at the Bird House in Davis Park. As a child, I spent a great deal on time at Davis Park and it was great to return to it once again. Back in those days, I made quite a tidy sum selling lemonade at the benches near the ferries. I've been in many houses at Davis Park through the years, but the Bird House is my favorite. Some of the other rental houses in this community of about 200 houses can be very, shall I say, rustic. The Bird House is extremely nice. Everything about it was clean and in great working order! One of my favorite parts was sitting on the front deck in the morning, drinking a cup of tea, and watching the birds, dragon flies, and deer do their nature thing. While the side of the house is located adjacent to a main walk, the house was always quiet and calm. A short walk in either direction and we were digging clams in the bay or catching a wave in the ocean. The grill (very nice, CLEAN, gas grill) helped us prepare wonderful meals on the nights we didn't treat ourselves to a dinner at The Casino Restaurant. The house is very nicely decorated inside (as my female friends/visitors noted right away). Even the beach chairs (the nice Tommy Bahama ones) were in like-new condition. My Mom loved the many fans that cooled off the place quite well. She also was happy to have a washer/dryer so when we returned home, all our clothes were clean. My Dad had brought his fishing pole but had forgotten the thing he uses to keep it standing in the sand--the Bird House even had one of those! My sister loved the outdoor shower and couldn't believe the house even had a hair dryer on hand. You can tell the owner of this house must truly love the area, as the house emotes serenity and love. I would highly recommend a week (or two) at this great spot on Fire Island!
Davis Park, Fire Island is the Eastern-most residential community on Fire Island, accessible only by ferry. The only vehicles on the island are service vehicles for the fire department and utility companies. Davis Park is a quiet haven and family community of residential houses and privately owned boats in the marina; there are no hotels in this community and the beach is never crowded. The ferry terminal is located at Patchogue (not Bayshore!), New York, which is the closest town on Long Island. The nearest airport is MacArthur/Islip, NY about thirty minutes away. JFK is an hour+ away, and LaGuardia is a about an hour and a half away. For a day trip to NYC, it is possible to take an early ferry from Davis Park to Patchogue, and then take the Long Island Railroad to NYC (an hour and half ride each way), but be careful not to miss the last ferry back from Patchogue to Davis Park, which is usually around 10:00pm midweek and a little later on weekends.
Other Activities: Walk down to the bay for sunsets and clamming/crabbing, building sand castles on the ocean, DJ/ dancing and restaurant at the 'Casino'
