Overview

About the property

Cabin, Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

Welcome to our cabin retreat located at the base of Caribou Mountain adjacent to both the Caribou National Forest and the Grays Lake National Wildlife refuge in Southeastern Idaho. We sit on approximately 80 acres in the midst of a recreational wonderland.

There are miles and miles of forest trails to hike, bike, cross country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, ATV or horseback ride right from our front door. You can be fishing premier trout streams and mountain lakes within minutes, including the South Fork of the Snake River, Blackfoot River and Reservoir, Salt River, Grays River and our home water Tincup Creek. The Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to many species of wildlife and a birders haven. We often have resident populations of moose, deer, elk and sand hill cranes right on our property. This is a trophy hunting area for all big game species. Arrangements can be made with local outfitters and guides for both hunting and fishing.

Most of all we offer tranquil seclusion. Enjoy some downtime and the beautiful scenery and wildlife. The closest towns with facilities are 30-40 miles away. Jackson Hole, Wyoming is about 70 miles and a great day trip. Your accommodations are self sufficient and luxurious. The guest quarters are not in the main cabin but occupy the upper floor of an adjacent log sided building. The accommodations feature an open floor plan of approximately 1000 square feet. There is a king size bed, double sofa sleeper, hardwood floors, eat- in kitchen, full bath, gas fireplace and laundry facilities. Even though we are secluded you will enjoy high speed internet, telephone service, satellite television, shared use of the spa, barbecue, outdoor campfire and much more.

We welcome guests with horses and can arrange boarding for up to four horses. We have a three-stall barn and three adjacent outdoor pens. Additionally we have approximately 10 acres fenced with horse-safe Centaur fencing. We also have facilities for trailers and RV’s with one full hook-up. An adjacent ranch has additional RV facilities.

Your hosts, Cheryl and Chuck Greenhawt, or our neighbors Brian and Alicia Muir can assist you in planning your visit. We are always pleased to share our knowledge of the area and can often be persuaded to ride or fish with our guests.

Why Charles (Chuck) Greenhawt chose Idaho

In the mid nineties we were searching for property to someday retire to and spend our summers horseback riding and fishing. We wanted more than just a couple of acres in subdivision. We found this property that fulfilled all of our dreams. 80 acres adjacent to national forest riding tails and many streams and lakes nearby to fish. The isolation and serenity were welcome but we were persuaded to build a cabin big enough to welcome lots of family and friends. In 2007 we finished building our dream retreat and now split our time between our cabin, travelling and our other home in Salt Lake City.

.

What makes this studio unique

There aren't many places where you can truly enjoy 360 degree views of breathtaking scenery. We enjoy simply sitting on the back porch to enjoy the views and watch the wildlife.

a lovely spot--away from it all yet comfortable--with VERY high quality owners

We'd never been to this part of Idaho, and will definitely be back. We hope it will be in this same rental. If you're looking for a beautiful getaway in the country, not entirely isolated but with genuinely remote outdoors stuff close by, this is it

The surrounding area offers a very large wildlife sanctuary (Grays Lake), lots of Oregon and California trail sites, and huge amounts of national forest. Even at high summer-travel season, we didn't find any of the nearby areas the least bit crowded. There doesn't seem to be any real developed tourist industry, much less a scene. Not positive where the closest restaurant is. Jackson is roughly an hour away, but it's hard to believe it when you are here. It is quiet, rural, incredibly beautiful, and feels VERY far from the ski town vibe.

The rental itself is located in an area of small ranches. You can for a few miles in most directions (you're up on the side of a hill), and I doubt there are even 10 houses visible in the entire area. They're all further than you'd want to walk. So this is not a neighborhood of cabins on an acre each.

The apartment is a very nicely done studio above a 3-car plus garage. (It's really nicer than that sounds. Not many garages are this neat and clean. Like the nearby house, it is all modern, pretty darn recent log construction, high quality and very well cared for.) It has all been genuinely designed, not just thrown together. Although there is no separate bedroom, the sleeper sofa is tucked into an alcove so whoever is there gets a sense of privacy. The kitchen and dining area are big enough for comfortably cooking with multiple people. The furniture and surfaces are not ridiculously luxurious, but have been chosen carefully by someone who was planning to have loved ones stay there often.

For us, the best spaces on the property were the screened porch and separate enclosed deck with hot tub. Although these are attached to the main house--not the separate building the studio is in--the owners welcome guests to use them.

The owners, their friends who stopped by to help us get settled in, and the neighbors we met driving on the gravel road provided great info on good hikes and lakes, and realistic descriptions of the fire roads that lead to interesting destinations in the forest, etc. And the owners were very friendly about having our dog stay. They are real animal people who clearly take great care of their pets and their home. Highly recommended

Owner's Response: We really appreciate the detailed review and are glad you enjoyed the vacation. We probably should mention the historic trails more to our guests. Next time you visit we'll show you how to see the remains of Caribou City which was a full fledged mining boom town on Caribou Mountain. Please enjoy the rest of your summer and we hope to see you again soon.

Solitude at its Best

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking to unplug, unwind, and find complete solitude look no further than Caribou Crest! The place is cozy and clean and the owner is responsive, kind, and accommodating. We enjoyed watching the magnificent sunsets over the mountains as well as exploring the surrounding area including the Tin Cup Creek and Grays Lake Nature Preserve. We will for sure be back!

Fantastic all the way around

  • 5 of 5

OUR STAY WITH Cheryl and Chuck could not have been better, except we came home with a empty freezer. We are bow hunters from the east and relish new country. This place did not leave us disappointed, there were opportunities and that is all that you can ask for. The view from property is Caribou Mountain which in itself worth the trip. The garage apartment just spoiled four guys from Pa., who spent many years in a wall tent to a microwave, dish TV, washer and dryer and a heater that works off a remote. The trails go on and on and most are ATV friendly . Cheryl's Chili Verde topped the trip with just the right touch.

Fantastic property!

  • 5 of 5

I spent three nights here in late August 2016 and thoroughly enjoyed my time. The property is just as described, seems pretty new, is very clean and had everything I needed for my stay. The king sized bed and the sofa are very comfortable. The location is comfortable, quiet, and beautiful. I spent most of my time fly fishing in the nearby streams and enjoying the National Forest, which starts just a mile or so down the road. I intend to stay here again and expand my fishing to other rivers in the area. The owners were very friendly, and I enjoyed visiting with them during my stay. I highly recommend this property for a relaxing vacation.
