Overview

About the property

1 BR, 1 BA, queen bed, 1 double futon w/8" springs in living room. Sleeps 4.

Unfortunately In the Lee's photos have not been updated yet because we are renovating the house. To do so, we are giving away lamps, tables, prints, chairs, dressers and bookshelves (but not our many cookbooks and novels, which guests may take with them if they haven't finished the books). We are buying cabinets, handmade rugs, Nantucket pictures, dressers and painting the interior.

We are eager to improve and update our decor; happily our location can't be improved. Guests call it "a special place." That description perfectly fits our location in Nantucket Town's Old Residential District facing The Old Mill, a quiet, working windmill built in 1746. When we are done with the renovation, In the Lee will be more comfortable and beautiful than ever! We will once again earn our guests' five-star reviews!

In the Lee is available Daffodil Festival in late April until November 1. Two people can enjoy a long-term rental from June to September (or whatever period guests want). Even though the house sleeps four comfortably, for an extended period two people are better. No pets, no smoking and no candle burning (a fire hazard with the breezes).

Air-conditioned, romantic and secluded In the Lee is in Nantucket Town's Old Historic District facing an 18th-Century quiet, working windmill built in 1746; it is the country's oldest, continuously operating windmill.

In the Lee is only a 10-minute delightful walk to Main Street, shops, restaurants, theaters, beaches and Nantucket Harbor, and a two-minute walk to the Island-wide shuttle bus stop and bike paths. Guests can walk to Brant Point, Jetties, Children’s, Francis Street and Steps beaches. With this superb location -- the Island's best -- no car is necessary, but In the Lee has two off-street parking spaces at the end of the long, winding driveway.

This tucked-away home has a queen bed and double futon. It also features a fully stocked kitchen; dining table that seats six; tile floor; hand-hooked, hand-dyed wool rugs with Nantucket, nautical and floral themes; a brick patio with a teak table and four teak chairs ; Weber charcoal grill; outdoor shower with hot and cold water. Beyond the brick patio is a grass backyard where children can play and everyone can enjoy the chaise lounges and Adirondack chairs while sunbathing, chatting, reading and eating.

Other Amenities: In the Lee also has complimentary high-speed Internet (Wi-Fi), a washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave oven, blender, Keurig with K-cups (or 12-cup Cuisinart coffee maker), toaster, small oven, all linens, beach towels, all cooking utensils, fish poacher, lobster pot, charcoal BBQ grill, charcoal, beach chairs (they can be carried or worn on the back and have a pouch to hold what you need at the beach), books, HDTV 32-inch flat screen TV (unfortunately not seen in photos because they must be updated), VCR, DVD player, sound system, books (including cookbooks and novels), children's toys, bicycle rack, and fresh flowers.

Caretaker: The homeowner/caretaker lives nearby. She therefore is able to respond quickly to tenants' needs, ensuring their comfort and enjoyment. Upon guests' arrivals, she gives tenants literature, Island maps and the Nantucket Restaurant guide. For a small fee, she will shop for groceries and supplies to stock the refrigerator before tenants arrive. As tired as guests are when they arrive at In the Lee, with a well-stocked refrigerator, they don't have to leave the house immediately to buy food.

Rental periods: In the Lee is available late April to November. Rates range from $2,700/week to $3,200/week, depending on the month and week. No pets, no smoking and no candle burning (fire hazard). Minimum stays are three nights.

Rentals are Saturday to Saturday. Maximum number of guests is four. Check-in is at 3 p.m.; checkout is at or before 10 a.m. Guests pay $500 refundable security deposit and $100 partial payment to clean In the Lee; homeowner pays the difference.

Please do not inquire about our accepting your dogs. We are pet lovers--we own two well-trained, obedient and friendly Doberman pinschers, one of whom is a hilarious puppy--but we do not accept dogs for many, many reasons. We've tried having guests' dogs in the house and each time it's been a no-win situation for our tenants and us.

About Carolyn Crowley

I grew up in Washington, D.C., Detroit, and Ireland. My family went to Ireland because American doctors could not diagnose what was wrong with my sick father. My mother thought we should move there so he could die in Ireland. But a country Irish doctor, just by feeling my father's skin, knew he had pernicious anemia. My father lived to age 91, many of his years spent in Windswept, our main Nantucket house, next door to In the Lee.

I have two degrees from Boston University: BA in English Literature and a MA in English Education. I taught fourth grade at an international school in Nagoya, Japan, and then English as a Second Language (ESL) in Japan (1968-1970), before becoming a reporter for the Mainichi Daily News in Osaka.

I then volunteered with the Peace Corps in Fes, Morocco, the cultural capital, teaching nutrition and ESL (1972-1974). Back in the States, I taught fourth grade on Long Island, seventh/eighth grade English in Baltimore and, substitute taught in Boston.

My favorite of all my jobs: I wrote newspaper and magazine stories 1980-2011 in Washington, D.C., and traveled the world getting my information.

I moved to Nantucket September 2011. My husband and I have two Dobermans we love and pamper.

Like my parents and our tenants, I love Windswept and In the Lee. They lack nothing and are as comfortable as a home should be.

Carolyn Crowley purchased this house in 1965

Why Carolyn Crowley chose Nantucket Island

My mother immediately fell in love with this property on her first visit to it in 1965. My father, however, wanted to live on the 'Sconset Bluff. Thankfully Mom won. They both loved Nantucket and our acre on a hill in Nantucket Town with its grand views of the Old Mill and Town so much that they moved permanently to the Island when Dad retired at age 70 as a Boston Globe editorial writer.

What makes this house unique

In the Lee is close to several beaches and to downtown Nantucket, where tenants will want to shop, dine, attend theatrical performances and movies. It seems as if all tenants walk downtown each evening to the Juice Bar to get ice cream cones.

Because of its height on one of Nantucket's highest points, In the Lee enjoys delightful summertime breezes throughout the day and night.

Guests relax, read, converse with each other, and eat in the backyard, which has a charcoal grill, Adirondack chairs, chaises lounges, and a picnic table and teak chairs. Guests enjoy privacy at In the Lee because the house, two-car parking area and backyard are not seen from the street.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This review is word-for-word from a frequent In the Lee tenant:

My husband and I have stayed at In the Lee many times over the years. We've always found it lovely, peaceful and charming. Sun-filled during the day and blissfully quiet at night, it's truly a special place, tucked behind the historic windmill. Perfect for a solo traveler or a couple, the house is fully equipped with a washer-dryer, outdoor patio with barbecue, air conditioning, dishwasher and a private driveway.

However, you don't need a car to stay at In the Lee as it's in an ideal location – a short walk to the center of town and an easy bike ride to the island's many beautiful beaches.

In the Lee's kind, conscientious owner is always making thoughtful improvements to the property – outside and in – taking great care to provide a pleasant stay for tenants in the hopes that they will return. There is always a helpful, knowledgeable caretaker on call if any needs arise and the cleaning crew does a very thorough job of making the house fresh for each new arrival.

In the Lee is a wonderful year-round choice for visitors to Nantucket.

Lovely First Family Trip to Nantucket!

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful stay at "In the Lee." The cottage was impeccably clean upon arrival and is charming and comfortable and fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. Of course you expect the basics (like basic cooking instruments and beach towels) but this house is stocked with anything you could possible need for a fun beach vacation - from lobster pots for cooking, to beach chairs we could wear on our backs as we rode our bikes to the beach to deluxe picnic baskets and more!

We really enjoyed the location and it was ideal for us since we did not have a car with us. It is a very easy walk to the center of Town and it is a longer but equally easy bike ride to some of the best beaches on the Island (including Surfside Beach and Ladies Beach). We rode our bikes to the beach nearly every day and walked (or road our bikes) into Town once or twice a day. It is just that well placed on the island. The cottage is also nicely off the road down a long pebble driveway and the cottage faces the the Windmill so it is very quiet and peaceful.

Lastly - but no less important - the owner (Carolyn) lives next to the cottage and is a lovely hostess. She is never intrusive but is sure to inquire to make sure everything is going well. I must admit we took an instant liking to her and so probably leaned on her more than most for fun vacation ideas and she did not disappoint. She had wonderful suggestions for us. She is also a gem of a person and we still miss her and we have been back about 10 days. We wish she was our permanent neighbor!

We hope to be back and sooner rather than later.

Get place in a great location relative to town.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at In the Lee. It was perfect for a couple and we even accommodated our daughter's visit for a few days. It is a short walk to town which we made almost every night for dinner. The many beaches on the island were easily accessible with our rented jeep. Carolyn was an excellent hostess and her dogs are the best!!

Nice cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was a great little secluded cottage . My husband and I stayed here for a week and we loved it. Perfectly appointed with everything one would need. The owner was very willing to meet any needs that we might have had which were none. We would definite stay here again.

Owner's Response: This appreciative couple came from Houston, Texas, with its temperatures in the 90's to enjoy Nantucket's 60- and 70-degree delightful weather and our well-equipped house. I am so glad they liked In the Lee so much to give it and me a five-star review. We work hard to give everyone this house with its superb location. Our guests can get easily to everywhere on the Island.

Cottage in Nantucket

  • 5 of 5

In June we stayed at this beautiful cottage. The cottage, very clean, well furnished and thoroughly equipped was set in an idyllic location next to an historic windmill built in 1746. A lovely stroll into town took only 5-10 minutes. The cottage was outfitted with everything one would need, including a barbecue set up in the backyard.

Bright, welcoming, peaceful, clean, happy retreat!

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived on the island we just loved the colonial feel and cobbled stoned streets and harbour. The air was filled with the aroma of spring flowers just in bloom. We went to Youngs bike shop to rent a car and started to drive towards the In the Lee. All the homes that lined town were so beautiful! When we arrived at our street we were greeted with this huge amazing windmill and a nice gravel driveway which at the end awaited for us our little piece of serenity of the next five days. We really enjoyed touring the island. Don't miss taking Barretts tour, The Basket Museum and of course The Whaling Museum. The beaches of course are beautiful!! And of course our inn keeper Carolyn. Such a lovely, lively lady with a passion and deep love for this island that is so infectious you cant help but fall in love with her island too!! I hope to return next year! This property had everything my husband and I needed!!

Charming cottage in a great location

  • 4 of 5

My best friend and I chose "In The Lee" as our base for a mother-daughter long weekend, as a reasonable alternative to two hotel rooms. We were delighted with the charm and ambiance, as well as the "walk to Town" location. The private back yard worked well for quiet times : breakfast, pre-dinner cocktails, or grilling steaks for dinner. The place was clean, and well equipped, and the owner very pleasant and informative.

We rented a 4 door, 4-wheel drive Jeep, which proved helpful for groceries, and gave us a chance to see the rest of the Island in the limited time we had available.

The location of the cottage was excellent for getting just about anywhere, especially to the grocery store and gas station (and Downey Flake Donuts!). We took the tour of the adjacent Wind Mill - fascinating!

The only issue we encountered with our clean and comfortable accommodations was sleeping 4 adults (a queen bed and a full size futon) - but as mothers/daughters, it was fine. I believe the owner is going to replace the 4-cup coffee maker with a regular size one. Towels and linens were provided, as well as basic kitchen supplies (foil etc) & spices.

We enjoyed visiting Bartlett farms (fabulous produce and flowers!) and Cisco Brewery (which also has a winery and a distillery, food trucks and live music!) and had dinner at Millie's, in Madaket, while watching the sunset from our outside table.

I will definitely return! The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I think of 5 star as "luxury", but this place was definitely nicer and roomier than hotel rooms or B & B's! Having to go through the bedroom to use the bathroom was a bit of an inconvenience, but the facilities were more than adequate. One of the daughters loved the outside shower, communing with Nature!

All in all, it was a terrific place at a real value, and I would definitely recommend it to friends or family!
