About the property

Condo, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-7)

The CITY of BARGA, one of Italy's officially designated most beautiful medieval walled cities, is the “jewel in the crown” of Tuscany's unspoiled Garfagnana recalling the height of Tuscan civilization with noble palazzi, churches with art treasures, tiny gardens with roses, geraniums, medieval passages.

Its elevation offers relief from Tuscany’s oppressive lowland summer heat. Its grandiose natural beauty and proximity to the Italian Riviera make the city and surrounding region a desired summer retreat for Italian families. The “new town” has a lively contemporary energy with its weekly market and a full range of city services such as a hospital, car rental, banking, internet cafes, etc. while "old Barga" is center stage the year round for fairs, pageants and parades.

Each time one enters THE PALAZZO ANGELIO, one experiences a uniqueness of being, an authentic renaissance aesthetics, a grandiose inspiration and a stylistic purity of calm nobility, festive mood and exquisite harmony of style. The flat's 300 square meters (3,000 square feet) are decked with five hundred year old beamed and paneled chestnut ceilings four to five meters high (14 - 18 feet) . Its intricately patterned parquet floors of East African teak and ebony are irreplaceable. The unusually large rooms are arranged in palazzo fashion, a sequence of long vistas, and furnished with antique and contemporary pieces.

Each room has a magnificent view, either onto the countryside and mountains beyond, or into the city and the Piazza below, the Italian “theatre of life” with children at play, working artists and writers from different countries chatting with local people, restaurants and cafes, making up a vital community small enough to feel intimate and to be enjoyed, and without automobile traffic! Bedrooms are spacious and each has a writing desk and a seating area for being alone time and privacy. Two have a suite character with a joining bathroom and doors separating the unit from common spaces. Two balconies, one from the Grand Salon and one accessible from a bedroom suite, show off art neouveau villas, a broad valley the dramatic peaks of the magnificent Appuan Alps.

Within 100 meters of the front door are three piazzas with bars, cafes, wine shops, fine restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, a public library and an English language library, and a 17th century opera house, fully restored, Garfagnana's nature begins at the city's gates with well marked trail heads, In spring and summer, forests and meadows are ablaze with crocus, narcissus, violets, and capers, all is part of an extensive national “nature park” system. The forests abound with streams, wildlife and fish, and a network of shelters to accommodate overnight hikes. The Appuan Alps hold limestone caves, many as yet unexplored and the Serchio river in the valley is one of Europe’s clearest and is stocked with salmon and trout. Its broad alluvial palins are ideal for horse-back riding (Barga's equestrian club offers horses for fifteen euros per hour) and its roads ideal for bicycling. Local gymnasium, golf, mountaineering, spelunking, swimming at the local pool and skiing at Italy’s famous ski area, Abetone (winter).

Good Rail and bus service to/from Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Sienna, Livorno

Ferry service from Livorno to Elba, Palermo and the entire Mediterranean

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

The fact that you are currently considering a stay at John and Brigit’s apartment in Barga means you are already on the threshold of a very special experience… having already enjoyed five memorable weeks in this truly special home let me make the decision easy for you: just do it! There really is no decision to make, do it and you’ll create wonderful memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. As a town Barga provides an exceptional insight into Tuscan living, the people are so incredibly hospitable and seem to radiate the positive spiritual energy the town itself possesses. The apartment places you in the very heart of this cultural experience, both literally and figuratively. The location is peerless–with restaurants, bars, galleries and the whole town rolling out from the front doorstep. Wander the narrow street and discover Barga’s secret piazzas, stumble on live music during the town’s many festivals, or, after sipping an Aperol spritz on the apartment’s balcony as the sun sets over the Tuscan hills, walk the few steps to the Opera House and take your seat for the evening’s performance.

The apartment itself simply bursts with character and for a truly immersive Italian experience one couldn’t wish for better. For the first week there I found myself meandering from room to room, discovering new features and delights each time I did so. You’ll spend time marveling at the ancient wooden floors, admiring the huge fireplaces, settling with a book in the carefully and sensitively curated furniture, throwing open the windows and shutters to let the sights, sounds and smells of Tuscany permeate each and every day. As a home from home one couldn’t be made to feel more comfortable by hosts Brigit and John, the booking process is quick and efficient, their welcome is warmly genuine and once the keys are handed over their presence unobtrusive… their stunning home becomes yours. The apartment’s fusion of modern conveniences and Italian heritage is delicately achieved and here one wants for nothing. I could have written a book on my stay in Barga, and sometimes wish I had, there is something about the apartment and town that is so inspirational and one bursts to share it with the world… the only problem is you’ll end up enjoying the experience far too much to devote time to such endeavors. I hope the above provides some insight on my personal experiences and trust that, someday in the near future, you’ll follow in my footsteps by thanking John and Brigit, such ho

Wonderful Vacation at this Magnificent Residence

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from spending one month at this incredible residence in Barga. The apartment is inside the walls of historic Barga and had everything we could have hoped for to make our visit perfect. The owner was very easy to deal with and he stayed in contact during our stay to make sure everything was as expected.

Barga is a great location to journey through Tuscany. We visited countless villages, vineyards, and cities - and were always glad to be able to come back to such a great apartment each night! There are lots of great restaurants within short walking distance, and also a fully stocked kitchen if you choose to cook at home.

The views from the apartment are amazing and each morning we enjoyed coffee on the patio and when we were there in the afternoon we would have wine and cheese while enjoying the great vistas!

We could not have been happier with any part of our experience during our month there. Perfect best describes our experience in Barga. We hope we have the chance to return one day.

Magnificent Palazzo in Beautiful Barga

  • 5 of 5

In our two weeks in the Garfagnana Valley, we never encountered a town more beautiful than the old section of Barga, and I doubt there is a more beautiful place to stay in Barga than this beautiful palazzo, which is not just a luxurious and comfortable place to stay, but also a wonderful place to entertain. Five of us used the three bedrooms and the comfortable sofabed in the office. Located in a lovely piazza, the Palazzo Angelio is on the second floor with large windows overlooking the "action."

The owners were extremely helpful in communicating with us after we contacted them. Their love for the palazzo and Barga were evident, and we felt more like guests than tourists. As long as you don't need a car right with you (there is ample parking within easy walking distance outside the gates), I think you'll love Angelio and the charming town of Barga as much as we did.
