From the over 200-ft of ocean shoreline on the property, you can float, swim or snorkel in your very own private warm, calm ocean lagoon or swim further out to explore the extensive coral pools. These pools support 11 types of coral, over 113 types of colorful tropical fish, green sea turtles and an occasional monk seal.

This exceptional home has Italian tile throughout, granite counters in a well-stocked kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and an open airy Great Room overlooking the ocean. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms with ocean views; one has a king bed, one a queen and one a double bed. All have great ocean wave sounds to lull you to sleep. The house will nicely accommodate a family of five.
Two balcony decks overlook the ocean and a third looks over the tropical gardens. An oceanfront covered lanai provides a second entertaining and lounging area on the garden level adjacent to the veranda that is perfect for sunbathing before slipping into your own private lagoon. Enjoy the ground-level covered and semi-enclosed tropical garden bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The property is fenced to enhance a feeling of security and has private off-street parking.

Located in a small, quiet seaside community in 'sunny Kapoho' with the least rain in East Hawaii and the best air quality on the island. The historic town of Pahoa is 10 miles away and has groceries, fine restaurants, fresh fish market, internet cafe, Subway, gas stations, Longs Drugstore, boutiques, business center, urgent care clinic, pharmacy, etc. Hilo International Airport is 29 miles. The Kona airport is 115 miles, about a 2.5 hour drive.
We have a five-day minimum but will consider as few as three days if we have an opening of fewer than five days and our caretakers do not need to work on the property. We retired to this home in Hawaii in 2001 from Alaska. Linda served as a natural resource manager, habitat protection biologist and SE Alaska Regional Supervisor for 27 years in Alaska. She met Kirk in Kapoho area while on vacation after he had completed a solo sailing trip there from Bellingham, WA.
Once in Hawaii, Linda was contracted by the State of Hawaii to serve as their first Marine Protected Areas Statewide Coordinator to foster greater conservation of the very most important marine ecosystems. The WaiOpae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District at Kapoho was established during her tenure in this position. We started the Cape Kumukahi Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), in 2004 and completed several multi-year conservation projects for the Kapoho tidepools. We now spend part of the year in our home in Bellingham, WA and the rest in Hawaii.

This property is absolutely unique compared to any other oceanfront properties we have seen throughout Hawaii due to easy year-round access into the protected tide pools plus the open Pacific Ocean just beyond the pools to watch the waves and whales and listen to the surf. The snorkeling is better than almost every other place I have snorkeled in Hawaii. This single-family home is the most private in all of Kapoho due to vacant oceanfront lots on both sides of the home and no homes across the street.
Private warm ocean lagoon just a few steps down from the oceanfront veranda. Fantastic snorkeling right from your door. Wonderful and ever-changing views of the Pacific Ocean and Wai Opae tide pools from the house and patios. No need to pack up the kids to go somewhere to enjoy the water, just supervise them safely from the comfort of your deck or veranda in the sun or shade.

Can't say enough about this house. Right on tide pools that are full of all kinds of fish, coral, and crabs. You can snorkel at high tide and walk on the rocks and look into the pools at low tide. The house is in a secluded area where you hear nothing but the ocean and some frogs. Very peaceful.
The house is also well placed between Hilo and the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. If you like scuba diving, I drove a couple minutes to Isaac Hale Beach Park and did a couple amazing shore dives -- lava formations, eels, turtles, and too many fish to name. You can also surf at this park.
One of the memories I'll carry with me for a very long time is sitting in the living room with a cup of coffee watching the sun rise.
This time we came for 2 weeks. Best place on the island, the Flanders have thought of everything to make this easy and comfortable.
This house is amazing! When I booked it I had no idea how spectacular it was going to be. It is on the actual Kapoha tide pools but away from the area where the public can access them. The sound of the waves at night is lovely and the snorkelling is some of the best we have ever seen. The house has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. There was just one problem. It was too fantastic and we were reluctant to leave and explore other areas of the big island. Pahoa is a quirky town and we loved the fish and chip shop especially.
The tide pools outside your door, the beautiful waves, and a lovely home with all the necessities. We hated to get out of the water! Had an exciting storm too! Perfect! Thanks!
We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home but unfortunately were disappointed on a couple of fronts. Here are the pros:
5 Star location - you can literally walk of the back patio into the tide pools for some really nice snorkeling.
Beautiful home with plenty of room and lovely outdoor living area including a full bathroom.
The outside shower was wonderful. :)
Lots of fans to help keep cool.
Lots of beach gear and other things that came in handy, like a thick yoga mat.
Beds were very firm and we found them uncomfortable. We actually purchased a cheap topper just so my wife could sleep. I would recommend quality mattress toppers for all the beds. This would make a huge difference.
There was no dish washer.
A week spent at the Tidepools House with my extended family was an experience we'll never forget. Comfortable house with everything we needed, fabulous ocean views and our very own warm lagoon at the back steps!! So many beautiful fish and the sunrises were glorious. Sitting on the deck in the evening with the sound of the surf breaking on the reef, palm trees swaying in the breeze and the full moon above was magical. A fantasyland for children and a laid back relaxing atmosphere for adults. We loved it!!
Volcano National Park visitor center is 37 miles and closest lava viewing area is 15 miles away.

Our home has been a vacation rental since 2009 and has maintained a five-star rating on vrbo. A standard rental agreement must be signed by renter and owner that specifies names of all persons included in the reservation, total cost, down payment received, and balance due and date. The rental agreement clearly specifies the terms and conditions to rent our home and to receive a refund of the damage deposit or in case of cancellation (NOTE: this agreement has more details than the vrbo simplistic categories). A sample rental contract will be provided upon receipt of your inquiry. The State taxes are 13.25% on the rental fee only.
If reservation is for >60 days out, then 50% of the total is due to book and final 50% is due 60 days before arrival. If reservation is <60 days, or is less than standard 5-day minimum, then 100% of total is due to book. Visa or MasterCard authorization is to be provided by person making reservation via telephone in a private and secure conversation with owner.
