Experience the famous WaiOpae Tide Pools and Marine Life Conservation District from this VERY PRIVATE OCEANFRONT HOME in sunny Kapoho on the eastern shore of the Big Island of Hawaii! Enjoy this green practices home that only uses eco-friendly products and educates guests about the coral reef and how to protect the bountiful fish and coral species.
Take a few easy steps down from the veranda into our private thermally heated lagoon and the protected inner reef of the WaiOpae tide pools. The 180-degree panoramic coastline views from inside the house, the upper decks and the oceanfront veranda, combined with the easy ocean access, make it a perfect retreat for the active family.
Relax into the sounds and sights of the ocean, ever-changing tide pools, tropical breezes, ocean sunrises and moon rises! Enjoy incredible stargazing over the dark ocean sky. There are no coqui frogs due to being directly on the ocean!
All of the 26 photographs were taken from the property and accurately show the house, property, oceanfront location, and comfortable furnishings. NOTE: Several of the other listings that show up on vrbo when you search for oceanfront or beachfront are NOT on the oceanfront, but instead further inland in the neighborhood and therefor much cheaper.
From the over 200-ft of ocean shoreline on the property, you can float, swim or snorkel in your very own private warm, calm ocean lagoon or swim further out to explore the extensive coral pools. These pools support 11 types of coral, over 113 types of colorful tropical fish, green sea turtles and an occasional monk seal.
These warm WaiOpae tide pools are such incredible fish habitat that they are one of only 11 marine preserves in the entire State! Enjoy the safest and best snorkeling in East Hawaii from this secluded beautiful location.
This exceptional home has Italian tile throughout, granite counters in a well-stocked kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and an open airy Great Room overlooking the ocean. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms with ocean views; one has a king bed, one a queen and one a double bed. All have great ocean wave sounds to lull you to sleep. The house will nicely accommodate a family of five.
Two balcony decks overlook the ocean and a third looks over the tropical gardens. An oceanfront covered lanai provides a second entertaining and lounging area on the garden level adjacent to the veranda that is perfect for sunbathing before slipping into your own private lagoon. Enjoy the ground-level covered and semi-enclosed tropical garden bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The property is fenced to enhance a feeling of security and has private off-street parking.
Other nearby recreational activities include: VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK with lava viewing within 15 miles; Ahalanui Warm Springs County Park with 90 degree ocean-fed pool; fishing, diving, kayaking, surfing, winter whale-watching, star gazing; hiking, bicycling, golfing, scenic drives along the coast; zoo, astronomy center, NW Hawaiian Islands visitor center; and museums, shopping, farmer's markets, and dining.
Located in a small, quiet seaside community in 'sunny Kapoho' with the least rain in East Hawaii and the best air quality on the island. The historic town of Pahoa is 10 miles away and has groceries, fine restaurants, fresh fish market, internet cafe, Subway, gas stations, Longs Drugstore, boutiques, business center, urgent care clinic, pharmacy, etc. Hilo International Airport is 29 miles. The Kona airport is 115 miles, about a 2.5 hour drive.

About Kirk and Linda Flanders
We retired to this home in Hawaii in 2001 from Alaska. Linda served as a natural resource manager, habitat protection biologist and SE Alaska Regional Supervisor for 27 years in Alaska. She met Kirk in Kapoho area while on vacation after he had completed a solo sailing trip there from Bellingham, WA. Once in Hawaii, Linda was contracted by the State of Hawaii to serve as their first Marine Protected Areas Statewide Coordinator to foster greater conservation of the very most important marine ecosystems. The WaiOpae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District at Kapoho was established during her tenure in this position. We started the Cape Kumukahi Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), in 2004 and completed several multi-year conservation projects for the Kapoho tidepools. We now spend part of the year in our home in Bellingham, WA and the rest in Hawaii.
Kirk and Linda Flanders purchased this House in 98
Why Kirk and Linda Flanders chose Kapoho
This property is absolutely unique compared to any other oceanfront properties we have seen throughout Hawaii due to easy year-round access into the protected tide pools plus the open Pacific Ocean just beyond the pools to watch the waves and whales and listen to the surf. The snorkeling is better than almost every other place I have snorkeled in Hawaii. This single-family home is the most private in all of Kapoho due to vacant oceanfront lots on both sides of the home and no homes across the street.
What makes this House unique
Private warm ocean lagoon just a few steps down from the oceanfront veranda. Fantastic snorkeling right from your door. Wonderful and ever-changing views of the Pacific Ocean and Wai Opae tide pools from the house and patios. No need to pack up the kids to go somewhere to enjoy the water, just supervise them safely from the comfort of your deck or veranda in the sun or shade.

From the moment we walked into Kirk and Linda Flanders vacation rental home, the 4 of us KNEW this was going to be an EPIC 2 weeks in the Kapoho Tidepools and Puna region on the Big Island. The home and private warm ocean lagoon on the property is in my opinion the finest in this area regardless of price. The Flanders have been extremely thoughtful and generous in providing the amenities and personal touches to ensure your stay will be remembered perhaps for a lifetime. This was my third time vacationing in this area and I know there will be a forth for sure and it will be at the Flanders home as well.
The home included most of the snorkeling gear and water toys needed to ensure your tidepools indulgence and swimming. The private pool is fascinating and safe day or night and the marine life is fascinating to watch. Just be careful on the lava! If you forgot some thing it is most likely the Flanders have not. The home was immaculate and everything worked like it was suppose to so no worries on that end. The interior of the home has an extremely "warm old hawaii" feel to it that really empowers the feeling of family and togetherness. Most of our nights were spent at the home enjoying the large kitchen/living room area where great meals and conversations were plentiful. The outdoor patio was just as accommodating as the indoors is with the killer BBQ, frig and TV, which by the way we very rarely watched. Why no TV.........because the views of the ocean, tidepools and jungle were unbelievable from everyplace you looked! For those that have to be connected the internet works great, satellite cable works great and there is a land line phone when the cell service is not cooperating. The outdoor bathroom and shower by the way is to die for and the views are unreal. Everything the Flanders have described about the property and amenities are right on and again exceeded our expectations.
If you are looking for a getaway where you have to options to either run around and see everything the Hilo side of the island has to offer or just sit and watch the world go by, well LOOK no further because you have arrived!

A Family holiday
A very pleasant, comfortable and inviting house. Well provided with all the necessary kitchen equipment, towels, snorkel equipment, etc. The house offered a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The situation is quiet on the land side, wide open to beautiful views of the lava reefs on the ocean side.
We have stayed in and near Kapoho 5 times, and this is the best accommodation we have found there!! We will certainly return!!
A wonderful place to spend your vacation!
We stayed in the Kapoho Tidepools house for five days in early June 2017. It was everything we hoped it would be. We loved this place! The kitchen is spacious and well-stocked with most everything you will need. There are three comfortable bedrooms. The house does not have air conditioning, but every room has fans and if the sunscreens and windows are properly managed, the house and bedrooms stay quite comfortable. The great room is very comfortable and abundantly decorated with interesting art, and the view from the solarium is incredible. The balcony decks were great for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning while you enjoy the breeze off the ocean. The property is fenced and surrounded by many trees and plants that provide lots of privacy. We ate most meals in the covered lanai, where we grilled fresh fish from Suisan Fish Market in Hilo. The tropical garden bathroom was awesome; it was very refreshing to shower outdoors in the morning or after swimming. Of course, the best part of the property is the oceanfront veranda and private lagoon, from which you can swim or snorkel out into the tide pools of the inner reef. When we were there, the weather alternated between sunny, cloudy, and raining, but the rain was usually in the evening or early morning and overall there was plenty of sunshine. From the house it is an easy drive to Pahoa for groceries and restaurants, to Kaimu to visit Uncle Robert’s Awa Bar and Farmer’s Market, or to Maku’u Farmer’s Market. It was also a very convenient base for longer forays to Volcanoes National Park, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, or the Hilo area. We highly recommend this home!
My husband and I had such a wonderful time at this house that we already booked our return visit! When we weren't swimming in the ocean, we were comfortably enjoying the ocean view from the patio, porch, living room... My husband got to swim with a sea turtle! The house has everything you need. And the Flanders are wonderful to work with. I can't wait to go back!
Great House, Great Location
Can't say enough about this house. Right on tide pools that are full of all kinds of fish, coral, and crabs. You can snorkel at high tide and walk on the rocks and look into the pools at low tide. The house is in a secluded area where you hear nothing but the ocean and some frogs. Very peaceful.
The house is also well placed between Hilo and the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. If you like scuba diving, I drove a couple minutes to Isaac Hale Beach Park and did a couple amazing shore dives -- lava formations, eels, turtles, and too many fish to name. You can also surf at this park.
One of the memories I'll carry with me for a very long time is sitting in the living room with a cup of coffee watching the sun rise.
This time we came for 2 weeks. Best place on the island, the Flanders have thought of everything to make this easy and comfortable.
Volcano National Park visitor center is 37 miles and closest lava viewing area is 15 miles away.
