Incredible stay on St.John at Buddha Garden

  • 5 of 5

First, I want to say how wonderful the island of St.John is for a relaxing vacation. Now the only way to improve on this was to find a place as special as St.John and we did! Buddha

Garden is decorated in exotic Asian decor that was purchased by the owners on their many trips abroad. It is better than the pictures and at the end of the road so it is very private. There are two large bedrooms with attached bathrooms with walk-in showers, a great kitchen with a koi pond outside, a living room area, many neat dining areas and places to read including the roof deck. Good for yoga too. The views are something truly special. You look out on several of the British Virgin Islands, the east end of St.John and a beautiful bay below where you can hear the waves. There is always a great breeze too. We rented a jeep to travel to the numerous beaches and could not believe all the sea life we saw. No jet skiing so very relaxing. The owners Lolita and Ric were extremely helpful and answered any questions we had. We wish we had had a chance to talk to them about all their travels. Lolita provided us with a list of less known places to snorkel, their favorite places to eat and where to grocery shop. There is a market a few miles away (Lily's Gourmet Market) that had all we needed, we did shop once in town (Starfish) too. When we ate out the food was wonderful (Shipwreck, Skinny Legs...) and the servings were large so we made two meals from most places. Before coming we read about it being expensive to buy food and eat out but when you consider there is no sales tax or resort tax it worked out about the same as other island trips we have made. I saw on another review were some people stayed with out a jeep and you could do that but for us it was much easier to have transportation. My husband went into town twice to go out scuba diving (Low Key- which he said was the best group he has ever dove with) and we could go places when ever we wanted. We spent a great day on the "Baddy Kitty" that took us to several BVI (you need your passport) to swim, eat and have a drink. It could not have been a better trip. Like islands in the Caribbean in St.John you should be conscious about saving water and there is a water collection system at this home. I wish I could upload some of my pictures to better show Buddha Garden and it's views. We are hopeful to return again to say at this beautiful home.

Owner's Response: I am glad that you mentioned Low Key and Bad Kitty as that helps everyone else when they want to go diving or the 'BVI's. I think you can explore the island more with a jeep especially if you want to dine out in some of our great restaurants.

Mixed Feelings

  • 3 of 5

After 3 nights at a wonderful rental in St Croix, we spent 12 nights at Buddha Garden on St John. Unfortunately, we left the latter property with mixed feelings. Buddha Garden is certainly unique - full of many interesting artworks from afar and pieces of furniture. We were thrilled upon arrival. The outside areas are also spacious with wonderful outlooks to a stunning part of the world. However, there are a few flaws with the property that would need to be corrected before I could recommend it to others.

We choose this place b/c we both practice yoga and were promised mats (there was only one that was deteriorating and needed to be replaced). Mosquitos were rampamt after the rains and we were shocked to discover that the screens on the windows and doors are not intact - there are a number of holes. The screen to the main entrance of the house is broken and there are gaps between the doors and the frames in a number of places. The consequence was that mosquitos could easily enter the property - which they did after a few days of wet weather. The problem was exacerbated as the mosquito nets on the beautiful, handcrafted, hardwood beds were not functional. Different pieces of material had been draped over the bed posts and held together with a few clothes pins - this made it impossible to avoid gaps (and there were not enough clothes pins, we had to ask for them). It would be relatively easy and inexpensive to resolve the problems with the screens. Also, the mosquito nets should be sewn together such that they fit the beds. In our travels in Africa and Asia, we have slept in some very basic accommodation but they all had mosquito nets that were effective and adjusted to fit odd-size beds.

A further issue was the work being carried at the owner's property that is situated immediately below the rented accommodation. Although this was not major construction and they started at a decent hour, the noise became an annoyance. We were told that Buddha Garden was going to be unoccupied after we left - that would have been a more appropriate time to conduct any work on the owner's property.

The property is advertised as a place to relax, unwind, meditate, do yoga. Unfortunately, when one cannot do yoga at home, nor sleep well because of being bitten by mosquitos the whole night, it is not a place I could recommend.

Owner's Response: HI: We asked them when they arrived if there was anything they needed to just ask. They never asked for extra yoga mats or we would have given them. We have replaced the broken screens and sewed the mosquito net immediatedly after we got this review. We now have two yoga mats. We do appreciate everyone' s input as we want to make your stay a great one.

Buddhas and Beaches

  • 4 of 5

When the winds are blowing (frequently) and the chimes are sounding and the birds are chirping and the Buddhas gazing down upon you ---you can only be in one place ---Buddha Garden. For those who are into an abundance of Asian art, furniture, figurines, masks and books --this unique house will be for you. The views are magnificent.

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful home! Views are spectacular. Uniquely decorated and much larger than what the pictures depict. We spend a thoroughly relaxing week at Buddha Garden. You can't go wrong renting this space. Thank you, Ric and Lolita!

Relaxing time with my lovely wife

  • 5 of 5

stayed at Buddha Garden on the east side of St. John for the first time. Very peaceful and quiet place, great views. This place has a lot of amenities including DVDs and many CD's for relaxing music. There are not many restaurants on this side of the island, but the ones we did visit were very good, especially LUCY'S (went multiple times). Getting there is an adventure the first time, but after that it becomes fun if you enjoy driving at all. You need to rent a 2-door jeep and that will allow you to be able to turn around very readily in the driveway. St. John, we will be back!!

Magical Stay @ Buddha Garden

  • 5 of 5

Buddha Garden was even more magical than the pictures show. Skylights and beautiful art from all over the world...museum quality of Zen!

Views were spectacular, very private & was easy to get to. Concordia Cafe is right around the corner (could even walk) with excellent food, often live music & spectacular views overlooking Salt Pond. Only met Ric & Lolita once & they were wonderful...thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home & look forward to returning!

Map

Coral Bay has great shopping and restaurants. You can rent kayaks and go over the Hurricane Hole. Go snorkeling on 3 great beaches. You are close to several of the best hiking trails on the island. It is the most laid back and peaceful areas of St.John but also has live music and great nightlife.

Other Activities: Boating, shelling, wildlife viewing, rock climbing, horseshoes, shopping, kayaking, mini golf, parasailing, biking, health/beauty spa
