Cottage Row Waterfront Retreat

About the property

House, 7 Bedrooms, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 15)

This beloved house has been in the same family for more than forty years. The house is an authentic antique waterfront 'Summer Cottage' built in 1900. It has seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, one half-bath, an enormous living area and a huge wraparound porch. Lawns, original stonework and towering trees surround the house. It has its own large private dock and there is a separate, secluded stone terrace with a fire pit overlooking the water. It is hard to imagine a more spacious or peaceful place to enjoy the beauty of Door County.

The living/dining area is huge and open with high beamed ceilings and abundant windows. The dining table has extra leaves to accommodate a large family gathering. There is a small den just off the main living room for watching television or playing games. There is a powder room adjacent to the TV room. The kitchen is old-fashioned with a large vintage porcelain cast iron kitchen sink and butcher block table and countertops. There are two generous pantries filled with cookware, dishes and glasses. Just off the kitchen is a large storage area with plenty of space for your bicycles or other equipment, as well as a laundry area.

The bedrooms are all big and bright with large windows. Several of the bedrooms have sun-porches that open off them. The mattresses and box springs are all new. The bathrooms are charming and old-fashioned: three have the original porcelain sinks and claw foot bathtubs and three have shower stalls.

Outside, just off the kitchen and dining room, there is a stone courtyard with a gas grill, table and chairs that is perfect for outdoor summer dining. Just beside it is a croquet court. There are numerous lawns with ample room for children to run and frolic to their hearts' content while the adults gather to eat and socialize. All in all, it is an ideal setting for a social gathering; it is spacious and comfortable (and we think it has the most beautiful sunsets in Door County).

The house is less than half a mile from the town of Fish Creek. It is a brief 10 minute walk into the center of town, where there are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants. The Peninsula State Park, with its miles of bike trails and beaches, is a 10 minute bike-ride away. This is simply the ideal location for anyone who likes to boat, fish, swim, bike, hike or just relax in solitude.

As you can tell, this is a very special place. Almost everyone who walks onto this property falls in love with it – it seems to transport you to a quieter and more gracious time. While you probably won’t find a house with greater soul or beauty, at the end of the day, it is an old country house with quirks and blemishes: so it is not a good fit for those seeking either luxury or perfection.

Our family truly treasures this house and we are happy to share it with others who will appreciate it as we do.

Wonderful weekend in a wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5

This home was beautiful, and served us well. We were 11 for a family Ladies weekend. There was room for all, with room for more. The family opened their home and we would come back, in a heartbeat!

Great place for a family vacation

  • 4 of 5

This is a large comfy vacation home. The living/ dining area is huge. The table comfortably holds 15. All the bed rooms are large as well. More at outdoor spaces -- croquet court, sunset pad, large yard, dock swimming/fishing area. FULLY equipped kitchen (no food processor though) with enough dishes for dozens and dozens. Bathrooms are adequate but dated. Generous parking we had six cars and there was room for about three more. Close to Fish Creek and walking distance to the White Gill Inn. Two caveats, none of which will mar your stay, upstairs gets hot (lots of fans provided), and the whole place is in need of maintainance.

Get Away

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful spot for a group of friends to get away to. It was more then we expected and had everything we needed. Plus the location made it easy to enjoy all of Door County! We will be back.

Outstanding week-end !!!!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful house and what a great time we had, the only problem I had was leaving. I really felt like I was living in the past in an old Victorian home, very clean and well supplied with everything that was needed and of course the view could not be out done. Thanks for sharing your home.
