The Little Cottage is big on relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I arrived Thursday evening. Barb was kind enough to leave the lights on and the keys on the table. Now that's Midwestern hospitality at its finest! The Little Cottage was stacked with everything you would need for a weekend or week or even a month of simply kicking-back and relaxing. After we arrived, we settled in, uncorked a bottle of wine and, as big city folks, soaked-up the quiet serenity and gentle lake breezes.

We awoke the following morning, slipped open the sliding glass doors, stepped literally two feet out of the cottage and we were greeted by the most beautiful sunrise over Lake Wilke. Words cannot do it justice, it was simply breathtaking and I wish Barb and Jim added a picture to this listing as I think it alone would be convincing enough to book a few days at the Little Cottage. After taking in the sunrise over some coffee and breakfast, we ventured out on the paddle boat and did a slow lap around the lake, taking in the sights, sounds and scents of quintessential Midwestern living. Aside from hawks, fish and the croaking of the occasional frog; next to the Little Cottage we encountered a turtle, who we affectionately named "Tom," sunbathing on a falling tree limb. As it were, Tom, just like us, was out every morning basking in early fall peacefulness!

I guess the best way to describe the experience is: we're pretty active big city people; we enjoy bouncing around town, but at the Little Cottage we felt absolutely no desire to go much of anywhere! We soaked some brats in beer, lit the BBQ and firepit and had a wonderful outdoor meal topped-off with smores and a moon-bathed boat ride across the lake.

The following day we lounged around until we mustered up the energy to drive into the town of Kiel and then off to Sheboygan to see what Lake Michigan looks like from around these parts. We walked the waterfront, caught the sunset by the old lighthouse, and grabbed some tasty and affordable food and drinks in downtown Sheboygan.

On our final day we took out the paddle board and kayak and cruised around the lake for one last go. We didn't want to leave but "real life," unfortunately, can only pause for a short while. We packed up our gear and took the scenic route home. All in all it was a great weekend. Barb and Jim provide everything you could possibly need to never have to leave the location and their hospitality and property proved to these city dwellers that being "cheeseheads" has some enviable perks!

Little Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We visited the Little Cottage during the first week of October. Late in the season :) The posting does not misrepresent the property in any way. Lake is JUST outside one of the two sets of sliding glass doors. Beautiful view of the sunrises and even the blood moon over the lake. The cottage is next to the owners' home and while it is visible from the cottage I never felt they were intruding on our visit nor that we were imposing on their space. If you are from the city, I can see why you might be a little uncomfortable with the sheerness/lack of window coverings :) However, the only reason I mention them is that others have commented and I want to reassure any readers that this should not be a major concern. Cottage is well-kept, all possible toys for accessing the lake are provided, and it really is amazing how little you would need to bring if staying longer and/or wanting to do more outside. Hennings Cheese is indeed wonderful. Kiel is close by and has a nice Piggly Wiggle for stocking up on groceries after you arrive. Also a McDonald's if you love mocha frappes like myself. Location provides easy and quick access to Lake Michigan, Lake Winnebago, Green Bay (one of their players graduated from our alma mater), etc. During our travel with Boy Scouts, we have visited similar locations with cabin/cottage accommodations so we have some experience in these settings. This property/scenery ranks up there with SD, MN, and NM. Wonderful place to stay :) Thank you.

I did not recommend this property for teenagers because, while I think teenagers would benefit from disconnecting for awhile, I can see them getting grumpy and making parents miserable :) I also was not sure about recommending it for people with disabilities. My professional career was in education and I have some familiarity with ADA regulations. However, if you are concerned about accessibility, please do not hesitate to contact the owners and ask if the property would be appropriate for your specific situation. They are delightful people :) and would do their very best to assist you.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here at the little cottage, and had the best time possible. Hidden away, but not too far, sits a beautiful cottage right on the water! When I say right on the water I literally mean it, 3 foot away. We have a family of 5 and we stayed very comfortably. We also had wonderful weather so the temperature of the cottage was very nice, even without having the a/c on. The temperature of the lake water was actually quite nice too, not too cold. You also have water toys, like a canoe, paddle boat , and newly added kayak to use. There was also a nice shed with other goodies to use about the cottage. Our kids had so much fun here. They fished everyday and caught over 15 fish a day small to medium sized fish, bluegill crappie, and walleye. They loved the canoe and paddleboat and, The owners had life jackets too. I cannot begin to tell you how friendly the owners are. They even brought us blueberries and fresh towels. The cottage was absolutely adoreable and had everything we needed. The fridge fit all our necessities perfectly, and stayed cold too. We ate, roasted marshmallows, fished, relaxed, and listened to music, played games, went to Hennings cheese factory just a walk away. It was great! So glad we stayed at the little cottage, we had such fun. Can't wait to visit again!

Favorite vacation by far!

  • 4 of 5

This was such a great little place. We are a young college couple who needed a break from school. The location is great with plenty to do, And the owner is extremely helpful. The first thing we did when we got to the cottage, of course, was lock the keys in the car. She immediately found someone to come help us, and it took less than an hour. Would definitely like to come back!

Cute cottage

  • 4 of 5

I felt the listing description was accurate except for the close proximity of the main house. There is a nice sized deck on the other side of the cottage if you wish privacy. We had another couple stay with us a night and found the size of the cottage was comfortable for 4 people. The kitchen was well equipped. The lake is very busy during the peak hours, but very peaceful during the "curfew" hours after 6 pm. The cottage has lots of natural light, and we had a beautiful breeze blowing through the cottage, all hours, the weekend we stayed. Barb was very easy to get a hold of if you have questions or concerns. There are numerous golf courses in the area which Barb is very familiar with, if you have any questions. The only concern I had, was the window privacy issue in the bedroom.
