Overview

About the property

3 bedroom areas, 2 full baths, sleeps 9

A private waterfront retreat with spectacular views of beautiful Owasco Lake is what our Poplar Cove home is all about. It has all the privacy you need with over 100 feet of water frontage and two acres of level grassy lawn, yet is conveniently located only one mile from the city of Auburn. This spacious home boasts a remarkable open floor plan with all brand new large picture windows and over-sized patio doors that provide absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the shimmering bright blue waters. The living space has wood laminate flooring, freshly painted walls, and tasteful modern furniture and decor.

Outdoors we have an extremely large deck with a gas grill, a table that seats 6, another table that seats 2, and plenty of lounge furniture for your gatherings. There is also a dock to fish from or dock a boat. Go ahead and bring your own boat or rent one from a local marina and dock it here at the house. We do have two kayaks that you are free to use. The shoreline has a seawall that is about four feet high and the water is usually around two feet high at the edge. The water level gradually goes out to about four feet deep at the end of the dock. There is a rather large sandbar you can kayak out to for some play in the sandy water approximately 150 yards to the northeast. Most areas of Owasco Lake have rocky bottoms. Everyone loves our large grassy lawn for kickball, soccer, volleyball, flying a kite or just plain old relaxing by the water.

Perfect, even when the weather wasn't!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment that I walked into this place and looked around, I was jealous that I didn't own the property myself. The house itself has so much character; I loved the winding staircase upstairs and the kitchen counter overlooking the dining area and well out to the lake.... So many windows to enjoy such a beautiful view. Even during a heavy thunderstorm, we couldn't help but try to enjoy the back deck and the scenery. It begs you to come out to play.

Easily found, but still nestled off the road, it's a perfect escape. You're still close enough to town to run out for some groceries to fill the refrigerator to enjoy cooking in the fully-equipped kitchen. The view from the deck (or even from inside the home)....overlooking the lake... day or night, the city beyond looks just as beautiful as the blue waters that are just a hop away from the yard. (Literally! Hop off the yard- you're in a lake.) Kayaks available and egrets to greet you as you sip your morning coffee... It's a great place to enjoy nature and still have a roof immediately over your head if need be. (Someone complained about spiders? Even million dollar houses on Skaneateles Lake have them, honey. If spiders bother you, stop staying at lake houses... or get over it.) The house was immaculate, and even the decor made me want to spruce my own home up a bit.

The couches were not only comfortable enough, but I personally had a great night's sleep on the living room chair with ottoman. Plenty of bed space available, but I loved opening my eyes when I woke up, to have that view of that lake. It was fun to fall asleep to Jimmy Fallon after having a blast still enjoying being there even though the weather outside was not conducive to really getting a chance to explore the backyard and lake. I wish I got a chance to spend more time there, and I am certainly planning on another stay! If I owned it myself, I would even charge more- it's a really good deal for a really great place to relax, have fun, take a breath, and a break. On a lake.

Thank you for the opportunity to stay there- I would probably keep it all to myself if it were mine.

A beautiful place to be

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cottage on beautiful Owasco Lake with all the comforts of home and then some! Everything you could possible need including a dishwasher, washer & dryer, stove, microwave, coffee maker, in-fridge water and ice, iron, and cable television made my stay extra comfortable. Although one doesn't need television here as the beauty of the lake can be seen throughout most of the cottage through the expansive windows that line the lake front property. From the fire pit, to the beautiful spacious lot, to the outdoor grills and seating, and the kayaks available to explore the lake, this rental property is a great place to spend time outdoors!

Inside the living area would accommodate a large number of family and friends for eating, conversation, and board games. The furnishings were very clean and comfortable making this large space feel very cozy. The open floor plan allows the host to enjoy entertaining and time with their family and friends. The scenery alone makes this place very special, but sharing it makes it perfect.

Another great feature of this vacation property is its proximity to shopping at Finger Lakes mall and surrounding retail locations and restaurants. Springside Inn is just down the road (within walking distance) and offers great food and music. Emerson park can be seen directly across the lake and we enjoyed time in the park while in the area. Next time, I would plan to see a show at the famed Merry-go-Round playhouse. While there is plenty to do near-by, there is really no reason to leave this lovely cottage.

The owner was incredibly accommodating with any requests and immediately responsive to questions. The cottage and surrounding property were clean and well maintained. It is a beautiful place to relax, entertain, and spend quality time with family. I would highly recommend this cottage to family and friends without reservation. This cottage on Owasco Lake is a beautiful place to be.

Save your money!!!

  • 1 of 5

I want to preface this by saying that I am used to being near the water as I live a mile away from the St Clair River & a couple of miles from Lake Huron so I understand that living near the water means spiders......but I also know if property owners take care of their property & have an exterminator come on a regular basis the spiders can be controlled. Totally not the case with this property....complaints are as follows....

1. SPIDERS - big ones, small ones inside & outside the house. Coming back after dark was like walking a gauntlet full of spiders, the goal was to make it inside without getting one on you. My friend was not so lucky one night & had one the size of a half dollar on her neck.

2. The place was filthy!!! Spider webs everywhere, mold & mildew in both showers & there was DRIED BLOOD on the comforter on the upstairs bed.

3. The dock was in serious disrepair. Most boards were soft & we personally were not comfortable having more than one person at a time on the dock.

4. Definitely not a 3 bedroom - it's 2 bedrooms with a sitting area outside of the upstairs bedroom with a pullout sofa.

5. Advertised fans in every room, there were a couple of disgustingly dirty table top fans & one equally dirty fan on a stand. Also there was a filthy box fan that didn't work.

6. Couldn't keep all the windows open due to gaps letting in flys, nats & bees.

7. Sliding screen door was a joke, it kept coming off the tracks - we finally contacted the property owners & the husband came the next day to "fix" it but it didn't seal properly so the bugs got in anyway.

8. Furniture was horribly uncomfortable. We did figure out near the end of our stay that the loveseat cushions were not put back correctly from a previous visitor so that ended up be a tad better than the sofa.

9. The beds are horrible, you can feel & hear the springs with every movement. It's obvious the property owners don't sleep here.

10. Just an overall rip off, this house was not worth the price & didn't look as nice in person as it did in the pictures.

A few summers ago we rented a beautiful house on Lake Michigan for half the price that was virtually spider free & clean. The first night in this house we slept with the lights on & seriously considered contacting the owners to request a refund........

Owner's Response: Our family stays here at least one week every summer, as we are both teachers. We enjoy our summer cottage very much and do take very good care of it. Our permanent residence is just a few miles away, so we are always updating and staying on top of maintenance. Both bathrooms just got new remodels about a year ago. It was very upsetting reading this review knowing how hard we try to make our guests' stays enjoyable and memorable. Our cleaning lady cleans houses for a living and does a great job in the three hour window between weekly tenants. There are spiders near any waterfront for sure. We do have pest control services done in the spring every year inside and out. We have decided to go ahead and have the service more often this year. I can assure you though, that any spiders we have ever seen inside are the typical small harmless spindly ones and not half dollar size! Also, we have purchased brand new mattresses for the beds. We know how important it is to get a good night sleep! The windows were replaced just three years ago. One of the screens was not in the frame correctly when this group left and has since been fixed. Sliding screen doors are always tricky. People walk through them sometimes, the rollers need replacing every now and then, etc. We try our best to keep on top of that. My husband went right over to adjust it after this group called. We do appreciate any feedback and like to get phone calls immediately if there is something that needs to be addressed. Please know we truly want our guests to have a wonderful stay at our home while enjoying the lake and everything the area has to offer.

Great vacation

  • 5 of 5

I grew up on Owasco Lake and was so looking forward to a week there and I was not disappointed!

The house was comfortable, the kitchen fully stocked with everything you need, plenty of towels, blankets etc. The large back deck was perfect for entertaining. We rented a pontoon boat for the week and my husband was out every morning fishing. The lake is very weedy right now but that did not stop us from kayaking. We went to the sand spit and swam there. Our evenings were completed with a fire in the fire pit.

The location is very convenient to Auburn & Moravia and shopping!

I would recommend this house and we are thinking about going back next summer

an excellent time

  • 4 of 5

My family and I spent a fun filled week here. The cottage was well maintained. Auburn, Skaneateles, and Moravia are all easily accessible within 10-20 min from the cottage. Syracuse is only 40 min away and features an excellent mall. Owasco marine is only 5 min away where you can rent fishing boats and pontoons at very reasonable rates and they put them in the water for you which makes it much more convenient. The lake here is very weedy but if that doesn't bother you it is good for swimming. It is an older home so there are a few kinks here and there but that is to be expected. Overall we had a very good experience here.

Lake front area nice

  • 2 of 5

We arrived at this home with high expectations. The sliders out to the front, the deck and the front yard leading to the dock/water were very nice. Unfortunately, the rest of the house did not meet our expectations. To the owner's credit, when we let her know our feelings about the cleanliness of the house, she offered to come and make it right, but on the Thursday of our week stay, my friend had a mouse run up the front of her and that sort of was the end of it for us. At that point we did notice mouse droppings in some of the cabinets. The property is not well maintained, but if aesthetics don't bother you, then that is not an issue. The couch/sleeper sofas in the living room are in pretty bad shape, but if you are not looking for comfort when sleeping, that is also not an issue. There is a bedroom upstairs with a very tiny bathroom and another bedroom/master downstairs with an attached bathroom, but unless you don't care about disturbing the person(s) sleeping in that room, the bathroom is only accessible when everyone is up for the day.

Owner's Response: This group complained when they first arrived that there were still towels drying, that a screen was partially coming out of the door and they wished there were more beds. We fixed the screen right away, but thought the other complaints were odd. Then 5 days into their stay got the complaints that the upstairs shower was not cleaned well and that the refrigerator seal was dirty (which ended up being just a discoloring). I offered to come and take care of these things and also deal with the mouse but they said they were just going to leave. Once every two or three years, we encounter a mouse, but it is usually in the winter months (this cottage is on two acres outside the city and has woods nearby). I did feel bad about this, but they said they were going to leave regardless of how it was handled. They had stayed the week before this at a newly built home on a small lot down the street and had higher expectations for our home because of the price. Our home is well maintained and taken care of. This year it got a new roof, new windows and doors in half the house and in the last few years got all new wood laminate flooring in the living room, dining area, and kitchen. It also got new berber carpets and new bathroom flooring along with fresh paint inside and many new linens, quilts, decor. Everything is in good working order. Even though we love the cottage itself, the absolute best part about it is the privacy, two acre lawn, 108 feet of lake front and the fabulous views!

The Finger Lakes region is well known for its wineries, waterfalls, rolling hills and beauty. There are plenty of parks and sites to visit within a few miles, along with the Merry Go Round Theater (live Broadway caliber performances), museums, restaurants and shopping. The quaint historic village of Skaneateles is only five miles to the east and has wonderful shops, restaurants, and scenic beauty. An abundance of golf courses are within a few miles of the home as well. Owasco Lake is a very clean lake for swimming and recreation. Fishing is excellent for walleye, trout, bass, perch, and northern pike.
