Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Bathrooms hilltop compound with ocean, village & mountain views

The Stone House is a lovingly-restored 18th-century aristocratic mansion set atop a hillside immediately overlooking the quaint Hydra harbor. It has fabulous views to the sea, village and mountains. A hand-hewn stone wall encloses the main house, a guest cottage, and a series of gardens and terraces. Decorated with original artwork and carefully furnished with antiques and cozy chairs, this private compound is perfect for a couple's romantic getaway or a family's summer vacation.

With three bedrooms and two and a half baths, the property comfortably sleeps seven, or eight if you request our baby crib. The main house contains a living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom, and guest bedroom and bathroom. It is equipped with all the implements for entertaining - and both the indoor and outdoor dining tables seat 8-10. The grand master bedroom and its private balcony boast exquisite views in all directions.

The guest cottage has a charming brass bed and beautiful corner fireplace. A half-bath lies just steps away. On its roof, a wonderful terrace is outfitted with a marble dining table, and has excellent views as well. There’s also an outdoor shower under a scarlet bougainvillea.

The compound is very central: a short walk down one set of the island's many cobblestone staircases places you in the heart of the port. A path through a pine grove brings you to swimming coves.

GUEST SERVICES:

The Stone House is owned by a family who has been spending time on Hydra for the past four decades. Visitors are hosted by our on-island concierge who will introduce you to the house and share her knowledge of the sights and secrets of Hydra. Although you will have complete privacy during your stay, assistance or advice will only be a phone call away.

Maid service is also included one time per week.

Email for more details about the house’s many amenities, or check our website: www.oliveandstone.com.

ABOUT HYDRA:

Hydra cradles a bustling harbor packed with shops, restaurants, and quayside cafes perfect for sipping a leisurely cappuccino and people-watching. Tiny cobblestone lanes and winding limestone staircases crisscross the island's villages - there are no cars or scooters! Donkeys and carts provide the island's only land transportation.

Long known as a haven for a rich blend of jet-setters, artists, and writers, Hydra also preserves a traditional, quaint way of life that has become increasingly hard to find in Greece's more heavily-touristed islands. The entire island has been preserved as a national monument, and offers unspoilt swimming coves, walking trails and serenity.

Stone House is certified by the Greek National Tourism Organization: EOT # 0262K92000286501.

Why Alexis Averbuck chose Attica

We sailed into the harbor decades ago and fell in love with this mansion perched above the Hydra Harbour. We bought it immediately and restored it in the traditional style, adding mod cons and keeping its unique character as a sea captain's house.

What makes this villa unique

Close to the harbor and swimming, yet totally private with an enclosing wall, the compound offers a special combination of peace, with excellent views and a sense of openness and grandeur, while still being a short walk downhill into town.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I never want to leave! The master bedroom is perhaps the best I have ever stayed in, with incredible views in all directions. And thank you for your attention to detail in all things -- from the organic bath products to the welcome basket. We look forward to coming back!

The small island of Hydra is found in the Saronic Gulf, 61km southwest of Piraeus (Athens' main port) and 7km from the Peloponnesus. The inhabited islands of Spetses, Poros, and Aegina are nearby, and can be seen in a daytrip, as can some of the towns of the Peloponnesus. Small, uninhabited islets lie within view off the coast and to the south. Visitors can reach Hydra by sea (90 minutes by hydrofoil). During the high season (June to September), temperatures range from the mid 20s C (80s F) to the mid-to-high 30s C (90s F) in July and August.

Beauty, simplicity and happiness

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderfully relaxing ten days in the Stone House, perched up on top of Hydra harbour. Things got off to a very good start with Daniela's warm welcome at the ferry, and it was all perfect from then on. The house is simple in layout, all the rooms are generously proportioned, with beautiful hardwood floors in the upstairs bedrooms. A special mention to the huge master bedroom with the high ceilings and beautiful views of the harbour and hills above. We used the ground floor terrace in the mornings, and the top terrace for evening drinks and watching the busy port below... The steep stairs up to the house quickly became routine, as was our determination to lose ourselves in the stairs and alleys above the harbour. Being up so high above the town meant that there was always a delicious breeze, and no noise, save the charming bells from the local churches.

On the practical side, the kitchen is fully equipped and Daniela had kindly provided the basics, as well as very good information on where to get the rest. The wifi worked perfectly too. We were also given an extensive list of restaurants, and we attempted to go to each and everyone of them in the ten days we were there. Obviously we didn't manage them all and so will have to come back !

Wonderfull stay in the Stone House

  • 4 of 5

The Stone house is a beautiful house above Hydra's Harbour (5 minutes of stairs), with an amazing view on the harbour and the sea. The master bedroom is huge, very confortable and has such a beautiful view too! the house has all comfort you need for marvellous holidays and the wellcoming is really warm and attentive.

Hydra was very hot at that time and we were only missing some air conditioning to be perfect!

Alexis was a great host to recommend!

Great home in a gorgeous town

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed for a week in April, 2017 and absolutely loved the house and the island. The house has great views of the harbor from the master bedroom balcony and two large terraces, as well as lemon and orange trees. The master bedroom is huge and our teenage daughter enjoyed having her own guesthouse. Daniela met us as we got off the ferry - despite our late arrival - and was very friendly, attentive and well organized.

The lack of vehicles and scooters on the island made for a very pleasant week. The numerous restaurants were universally good and the shop owners friendly and helpful. The high-quality walking paths along the ocean between the small towns and the main town were a highlight. Loved it!

Can I stay forever?

  • 5 of 5

This is living the Greek Island fantasy. The house is huge and gorgeous. It's very historic and is beautifully restored. Hydra itself is a gorgeous fantasy island, without cars and chaos. It's perfect for long, beautiful walks. The only problem is the house! The mesmerizing views of Hydra's postcard-perfect harbor are so great from the terraces and rooms, that we never wanted to leave the property. The owners have someone meet you when you arrive and they make everything easy. Can't wait to go back.

Loved the stone house

  • 5 of 5

This was my family’s 4th trip to Hydra—it’s literally a different world that changes all who visit. Your amazing house was like a dream come true and by far the best residence we’ve ever rented anywhere. The master bedroom is beyond amazing (and has ruined us for all future hotel stays, by the way). The views – especially from the master and the terrace above the guest house--were dazzling. Thank you so much for welcoming us to this heavenly spot. We hope to return soon!

Stairway to Heaven

  • 5 of 5

On this, the 40th anniversary of my first visit to Hydra, we wanted to stay somewhere truly special. The moment I came across the website for Stone House, it was clear no other accommodations would do. To live for several weeks as Hydriots, in one of the island's historic limestone 'archontika', is a unique, never to be forgotten experience.

Waking to the sound of church bells in the 'virani' - our spacious, upper floor bedroom - and pushing open the shutters to sweeping views of a loulaki-blue sea, the yacht-filled harbour, the dazzling white town with its terra cotta roofs, and the surrounding hills with their distant monasteries was a daily, breath-taking marvel. There can be very few vistas anywhere that are more glorious.

We found that after a day of exploring (and climbing innumerable stairways!) a simple, home-cooked dinner, enjoyed in the glow of hurricane lamps on one of Stone House's terraces, with the harbour's necklace of lights below and the stars overhead, was a sensory experience that would be difficult to surpass in any restaurant.

Stone House quickly became our home and on our final day we departed reluctantly (is there another way of leaving Hydra?), displeased to think of strangers waking to the bells in "our" bedroom.

Thank you Kate and Alexis, for the most enjoyable of our many holidays on Hydra. We look forward to returning to Stone House next year!
