Property description

The owner, a Lititz native and descendant of PA Dutch Mennonites, has lived in East Hampton & NYC and calls this property 'Lititz Haus.' She knows the area well and her “homemade” guide books can point you to a slew of things to see and do. You are a walk away from the Wilbur chocolate factory and beautiful Lititz Springs Park. Come feed the ducks! Use our bicycles to explore Amish countryside, or drive to the “flea markets,” quilt or antique shops. 'Eat yourself full' as the Amish say, at a “smorgasbord.” Stroll through gentle Amish towns like Paradise, Intercourse.

You are a 40-minute drive from the many attractions of the more well-known chocolate town, Hershey PA, including the famous Hershey Park and Hershey Zoo, the Hershey Chocolate Museum, and beautiful Hershey Botanical Gardens.

In the other direction, about 30 minutes out, there are outlets galore, really great 'cheap stuff,' and smorgasbords alike, the Sight & Sound Theater, the historic Strasburg Railroad Museum, the 'Choo Choo Barn' miniature train museum. An old steam train with dining cars can take you through Amish farm country, and occasionally, 'Thomas the Train' stops by. Lancaster County is a mecca for families and kids and Lititz the perfect town from which to explore.... This is not only the owner's biased opinion... Budget Travel magazine recently voted Lititz the 'Coolest small town in America.' Friendly folk, fun and relaxation. My foreign guests have called Lititz and our home a 'true slice of Americana.' Kids are in heaven during the holidays in Lititz... The 4th of July spectacular in Springs Park is like no other--- kids activities like 'panning for gold,' the best firework displays in the region... Clair Bros Global (the owners relatives) supply sound and musical entertainment to the area which you'd never think to find in a small town. The Halloween parade is divine... with tootsie rolls and candy setting kids a-scrambling from the curbs... Some of the Easter egg hunts have been known to involve a helicopter with pouring out millions of treasure-filled eggs out onto a large church field -- or the local Sauders egg company will supply real, hard boiled eggs you can crack and eat... Christmas is as elegant as ever in Lititz, with the most beautiful candlelight services, Moravian stars lit above front porches all about the town... But the owner's favorite has been a Lititz tradition since the 1800s -- to hear the Moravian Trombone choir which starts playing at 2am, walking through the town and ending at the beautiful Moravian church at dawn for an Easter ceremony you'll never forget. And if you’re lucky, you’ll hear the clip-clop sound of long caravans of Amish horse and buggies, smothered in the din of rolling wooden wheels, going down Broad or Main Streets early Easter Sunday morning. In Summertime, the Lititz Springs Pool is a huge facility of 3 large refreshing pools, and the nearby Rec Center has every activity, with an indoor pool for kids that is to die for. Lititz Springs Park has events throughout the Summer -- amazing art shows, craft shows and flea markets gather there ... And if that all just sounds too confusing to choose from, or the weather outside is frightful, perhaps you want to curl up and read a good book !!

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2007

About: I have a common Pennsylvania Dutch surname. My paternal 'Papa' (pronounced Paw-Paw) was Mennonite. My “Nana” (which is pronounced like Banana without the “Buh’”) was “gay.” You know -- in the 1920s. 'Gay' meant 'happy! To Mennonites, 'gay' also meant 'not Mennonite.' Nana wore makeup and got her hair done ... I guess Papa decided to trade Mennonite for 'happy,' because he married Nana. So through the Depression era and WWII, Nana raised 7 children and my Papa raised several barns and houses as he was a carpenter. I think one of those kids was my Dad, yes the last one, that was him. Nana worked in the ticket booth when Lititz had a movie theater, then a seamstress in a Drycleaners, where she knew everyone in the town and did not retire from that job until she was 87. Growing up in the 60s and 70s, Christmases saw my Nana's little house filled with about 40 people, what with Aunts and Uncles all having kids and so on. I have so many cousins I've lost count -- and that's just my paternal side! I moved to Manhattan in the 80s for what I thought would be a short stint of 2 years, but then met my Manhattanite husband and ended up staying another 20. Fortunately, he liked to visit my big, happy family of 'country bumpkins,' here -- and often ... We only stayed at Swiss Woods, (my favorite Inn here!) but since we came so often it was like 'ka-ching.' Then when we had our baby, (after unfortunately Nana passed), visiting my maternal grandma 'Mom Mom' on the farm at which I spent so much of my childhood, became a dire necessity... or I would have a little baby walking around the Manhattan apartment saying 'Mom Mom. Mom Mom. Mom Mom's house' like forever. We knew we needed a 2nd home here.

Why Lititz, PA, USA:
I don't even know if I saw any other homes, but when I came into this one, this was it -- the house I had always dreamed of when growing up in Lititz. My husband and I had NO idea of ever renting it out. I just made it cozy for us to have some peace of mind from the city. I first fell in love with the kitchen, then the washer/dryer IN the kitchen, then the fact that I could watch TV FROM the kitchen, or drift outside to the porch and BBQ. It seemed so much bigger on the inside than it looked from the outside. And even though it is the end of a 6-unit townhouse, it seems like a house of its own -- private. Lititz is such a nurturing and fun-filled town for children ... I wanted to furnish it as the cozy quintessentially Lititz-style home like the impeccably furnished and kept homes of my Lititz Aunts, but also give it the comfort of the Hamptons.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
Location, location ! Little did we know Lititz would be dubbed the 'Coolest Small Town in America' by Budget Travel magazine... But it really is. There really is enough to do within bike riding distance, like take our daughter to the beautiful Lititz Springs park and feed the ducks and do the playgrouand... then to the chocolate factory or to make our very own pretzel at the first Pretzel bakery in America..Sturgis. Or have the chocolate 'turbo' coffee at the Chocolate Cafe. Now there are places like Bulls Head pub and ABC brewery. And Glassmeyers is now Tomato Pie. Capriccio's is always good if we missed the NYC real-Italian-family run places... And although there is one of the most beautiful public swimming pools with Lititz Springs Pool, and lots to do in Summertime, with exquisite craft and art shows and flea markets... Wintertime in Lititz is quite cozy as well. If you want to venture out to Middlecreek about 1/2 hour away, January and February sees 100,000 to 200,000 snow geese which is depicted by a large photo in Lititz Haus. And the Lititz Rec Center has one of the best indoor swimming pools I've ever seen, plus mega workout facilities. Landis Valley has a large indoor tennis facility as well. Most all of these places have childrens rooms or baby sitting... and of course, there is even a little children's museum which is a lot of fun... There are always animals... And if it's too cold to go and see them at the farms, you will probably see a horse & buggy pass, especially on Sundays. Fridays, the Green Dragon in Ephrata is the best place to go see a great flea market with great food... (You must do the little diner inside)..and see the Amish and farmers' animal auctions. Tuesdays the flea market to go to is Roots (which rhymes with Toots as in Tootsie Roll) ... There is really so much to do in Lititz all year round and then again, the best thing about this house is that you don't have to do nothin! Curl up with a good book. Enjoy !!
