By the time you reach my listing, you already know the great things about Hanalei, so no need to tell you how special Hanalei is.
My Hanalei Coconut Cottage is right in the heart of Hanalei just a 3 minute walk to wonderful Hanalei Town and a 4 minute walk to the spectacular beach at Hanalei Bay. All properties listed under Hanalei are not all IN Hanalei, so ask questions of the owners.
It is 3 bedroom/3 bath, BUT we don't charge you extra if you are a party of only 2. The rates are competitive with other smaller cottages. If you are 2, you pay the base rate, if more in your party, there is a charge for each additional person, up to 5 maximum.
This recently remodeled 3 bedroom, 3 bath home features a gated entry for privacy, air conditioning in each bedroom, a new full kitchen with dishwasher and granite counters, 2 outdoor showers, and a master bedroom with jacuzzi and shower. Full sized laundry inside home. Wonderful view towards the backyard, and beyond; no houses behind us, just all natural vegetation and the Hanalei mountains in the distance sometimes with 2000+ ft. long waterfalls on them.
Lots of privacy in this wonderful cottage, quiet, peaceful, fabulous master bath with jetted tub. All tile floors, feels good on your feet.

I first bought property in Hanalei in 1977, because it was so quaint and had that 'small town' beach community feel. It's just like a little surfing town out of the 60's.
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
Hanalei is the most unique spot in all of Hawaii: quaint little surfing style town out of the 60's. Walk everywhere: to town, beach, pier, dinner, groceries, coffeeshop. When people who live in the state of Hawaii want to take a vacation and can't go to the mainland, they come to Hanalei !
Close to the beach, close to the village, idle location.
We rented this house in Hanalei for our vacation and it was great. Close location to beach. Spacious, comfortable house. A/C in bedrooms was a major plus (very humid the week that we were there). Outdoor showers with hot/cold water. Walking distance to Na Pali Catarmaran Tour. Spacious back deck. Beach chairs, cooler, and umbrella were key. Would absolutely rent again.
Last week my wife and I along with our 2 adult daughters had a wonderful vacation in Kauai's charming Hanalei town. Our home for the week was "Coconut Cottage" - a well-appointed house only a minute's walk from the village centre. It was perfect for us with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths. When we weren't eating great food served up in the local places, we prepared our own in the fully outfitted kitchen. I often play chef and really enjoyed the fast heat of the gas range and the granite countertops on both sides for prep. The space here is wide open front to back so the kitchen-island work allows you to see and talk with others sitting on the barstools in front, at the table in the dining area or over on the comfy sofas in the bright lounging zone. Two sets of patio doors in this area and another in the master bedroom open to a full length deck on the back of the house, which faces westerly. Varieties of palms, banana, and a large acacia tree provide late day shade on that side. Some bougainvillea vines work their way through the greenery and were in bloom. This all provided good cover and perching for local birds like zebra doves, japanese white-eyes, red-crested cardinals and white-rumped shamas. We also spotted a few species of anoles and geckos hunting among the leaves with the odd one visiting the deck for close-ups and to take care of the few insects. A family of 'red-junglefowl' helps with bug cleanup too - the little week old chicks following mom around with dad on security alert. He also doubles as your alarm clock.
The house is floored completely in large ceramic tile and all interior wall corners are generously rounded - two features I liked about this bright and airy home. It is tucked in behind a tall, nicely pruned evergreen hedge with a split-swing drivethrough gate. Access to the beach on Hanalei Bay is just down the street, about a 5 minute stroll away. The homeowner is very thorough and prompt with communications. She has great contacts in the town who helped us with tour booking and local exploration. My wife and I have only in the last few years started to rent houses for our vacations. If this is your cup-of-tea, then Coconut Cottage is the place to be!
After eight visits to Hawaii, including five to Kauai, my wife and I have finally found THE place to stay.
Located a maybe a three-minute walk from the Hanalei town center, and only a little longer walk to our favorite beach on the planet, the Coconut Cottage provided us with exactly what we wanted in a vacation rental--location, location, location & comfort.
After vacationing in more-remote rentals on the north shore, we learned the hard way that proximity to a grocery store and eating establishments is a big deal. Sleeping five minutes from Tunnels was nice when we did it, but then we needed batteries and Band-aids and more diet pop and... any little thing that pops up while 2,500 miles from home. The Big Save grocery store is a slow-paced, five-minute walk from the Coconut Cottage. And you pass up multiple eating establishments on the way. (You must try the tropical pancakes at the Village Bakery in the shopping center!!! Service is a bit slow, but so worth the wait. Oi!)
It has been suggested that the beach is a 2-minute walk from the property, but realistically, at a decent clip, it's more like five minutes (not exactly a marathon), and that will get you to the Hanalei Pavilion/park area, with one of only two lifeguard stands on the entire two-mile, crescent-shaped, sandy beach from Heaven.
In the summertime, the waves are small, the serf nearly calm... and the sand is soft a baby's brand-new posterior. It is NOT a beach for snorkeling. For that, go to Tunnels (my personal favorite), or Hideaways (summer only), or Kee Beach. But it is absolutely PERFECT for families... sand-play, gentle serf-play, sunning till the roosters go to, well to roost.
As for the Cottage itself, it's sooo much more spacious than the photos appear.... the open floor-plan of the kitchen-dining-living room area gave my wife and I an instant "Wow!"... so very functional/vacationer friendly! The entry-way is enclosed & big, perfect for dropping stuff you didn't want in the house proper; the master bedroom/bathroom is also spacious (jetted tub!); the lanai is the full length of the house; ample furniture in all the right places; the hose & showers (2!) are very handy....
We had no noise issues from nearby downtown, the tall hedges around the property gave excellent privacy, and we closed/latched the front gate every night... a nice option. And NO BUGS in the house!! A small miracle in Hawaii.
Two thumbs waaay up.
I searched for a while for a place close to hanalei bay beach that was affordable. This was it. We needed a 3 bedroom and preferred air conditioning. This is the place.
The location is just great. 2 minute walk to the beach where my teens completely loved the sand and water. 1 minute walk to the main shopping area.
The home is well kept, fully functional, and clean and spacious. We will be back in Hanalei Bay and we will try to rent this place every time.
Carolyn Barnes is a great communicator and clearly cares about the property and your time there. Highly, highly recommended
When we made our plans to return to Hanalei last fall, we decided to try to find a home close to the beach, in a private location that was also affordable. Not an easy task. Most of what we considered close to the beach were either not affordable of if they were, not desirable. That is until we encountered the Coconut Cottage and Carolyn Barnes.
This home has it all! It was a few steps from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, completely surrounded by vegetation, extremely private and close enough to downtown we could hear the cheers from Calypso as the Patriots scored again.
Carolyn Barnes is extremely attentive to her guests and the condition of the Coconut Cottage. This is a beach property and is superbly maintained. When you arrive and you walk barefooted across the beautifully ceramic tiled floors, not as much as a pebble of sand can be felt under foot. Yes, it was that clean as was everything else! Coconut Cottage reflected pride in ownership throughout and Ms. Barnes’ overriding philosophy was reflected in everything about her wonderful home on Hanalei.
The pictures provided online reflect the actual condition of the home! What cannot be shown in the pictures is the wonderful time you will have should you select this amazing home in this most unique community.
We stayed here 9 days & loved every day of it. It's close to town & the beach- walking distance to both! Kitchen was perfect. We travel to Kauai every couple of years but always stayed in Kapa'a.
I usually find pictures of condos rarely resemble where you stay. Not so here! Exactly like the pictures- actually better if that's possible! I liked parking off the street & closing the gate- very private.
This is the perfect getaway if you plan on staying at the condo alot. We had plans to drive places but found ourselves happy to just hang around & do.......nothing!!
My favorite pastime was walking to Tahiti Nui's for drinks & pizza & then having leftover 'Nui pizza for breakfast the next morning. Oh yea!
Most relaxing trip I've had in years.
Napali Coast boat rides; helicopter rides over the island
