NOW BOOKING FOR SUMMER 2018.

NOTE: While you may book our place immediately if you wish, we strongly urge everyone to contact us first with any questions they may have. We want all our guests to love staying in our house as much as we do, and to that end, we'd like the opportunity to make sure the Phoenix is the best fit for your party, before you make any monetary commitments.

Welcome to Phoenix in the Dunes, a luxury home completed in 2006 with all the amenities you seek, just 2.5 hours from Chicago and 3.5 hours from Detroit. It's perched on a wooded dune 700 feet from a large private beach shared by just ten houses--easy to get away from it all, yet a short walk or ride from the center of Castle Park, a historic 19th century resort community. There's a pool, eight green-clay tennis courts, half-day 'play class' for the kids from July 4 to mid-August, and lots more.

Bedrooms: 5 (1 king, 1 queen, 2 with 2 twin beds each, 1 with bunk-beds, daybed and sleeping loft)

Sleeps: 12 in beds. Overflow guests can also be accommodated on 2 sleeper couches in the living room.

Bathrooms: 3 1/2. Master bath has two-person whirlpool tub. Downstairs bath (adjacent to queen bedroom) has walk-in shower with grab-bars, seat and hand-held shower, plus rain-head. Second upstairs bath has kid-depth bathtub with shower. Extra upstairs powder room, too!

Kitchen: State of the art gourmet kitchen and adjoining pantry with soapstone countertops, hickory cabinets. Kitchen window seat and farm table look out on deck and wooded ravine.

Dining room: Farm table seats up to 12.

Living room: Comfy couches, fireplace, TV with DVD player and gaming system.

Outdoor living: Back deck and patio put you in the treetops, with excellent morning sun and terrific bird-watching. Gas grill, charcoal grill, Adirondack chairs, and dining table and chairs. Another deck wraps around the house on the upper level, with a bump-out overhanging the hill--spectacular yet peaceful.

About Elizabeth Gardner

Our family has owned the site of Phoenix in the Dunes since 1960, when the previous generation built their dream Castle Park cottage out of picturesque but highly flammable old barn wood. After the original house burned in 2003 due to carelessness on the part of a power company work crew, we rebuilt, aiming to preserve the cozy charm of the original while making the additions we had always wanted (including a gourmet kitchen and lots more bookshelves). The Phoenix that arose from the ashes is one of our favorite places in the world, and many of our guests feel the same. We hope you will, too.

Elizabeth Gardner purchased this house in 2006

Why Elizabeth Gardner chose Holland

If you have found our listing, maybe you have some connections to Castle Park yourself, or know someone who does. The community has many families that have been here for generations, ever since the Castle was acquired by the Reverend Parr more than a century ago to be a summer camp for boys. The campers' families bought building lots and built quaint cottages. CP has grown modestly over the years but still has only about 100 homes, and though the hotel that used to be in the Castle is now gone, the common areas retain their old-fashioned air.

What makes this house unique

The Phoenix is especially popular for small-to-medium sized family reunions. Our dining table can accommodate pretty much everyone, but after dinner (or anytime really) you can curl up with a book, get a game of dominoes going, or watch a movie, and no one gets in anyone else's way. We have several different outdoor spaces as well, so you can socialize or not as the mood takes you. Our deeded private beach is often deserted, especially on weekdays, and you can walk for miles in either direction depending on the water levels in the Lake. We especially like spending long lazy afternoons on the back deck that overlooks a ravine, chatting, sipping iced tea, and watching the birds zoom around.

Awesome accommodations for 4 couples and a few children!

  • 5 of 5

We had a family getaway here, and it was perfect for 4 couples and 3 small children. A little walk to the beach, and very secluded. Great place to relax and get away.

Great for our two young families!

  • 5 of 5

We drive the easy 2.5 hours from Chicago and stayed at Phoenix in the Dunes with another family over the Columbus Day weekend. 4 adults and 6 kids under 6. The house was great. There was plenty of room for everyone and enough beds to spare. We like to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed and more...stand mixer, coffee maker, espresso machine (lattes!), massive stock pot, skillets of all sizes, multiple sets of dinner dishes, and on and on. The two story living room with fireplace was really comfortable. Everything about this house is just perfect.

We went apple picking at nearby Crane's apple orchard, then avoided that lunch crowd and had a lovely lunch at Saugatuck Brewing Company (conveniently located about halfway between Cranes and Phoenix in the Dunes).

Another afternoon, we drove about 8 minutes to the Saugatuck State Park and hiked through the woods to the lake. We also made several short walks from the house to the lake where the kids played on the beach.

I definitely recommend this house. For us, the only drawback...and this is being very picky...is that the house is up high with dropoffs all around, which means there's no yard for the kids to go out and play in. Obviously, there is plenty of other awesome outdoor fun to be had though.

Also, Elizabeth was really great to work with leading up to our stay and provided all the information we needed to feel comfortable in the house. She was very responsive to all my questions and easy to deal with as far as payment, keys, etc.

If you're thinking about staying here, DO IT!

A wonderful week on Lake Michigan

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful and in a lovely wooded setting. Everything is there to make life easy for the week, and enjoyable for the occupants. We had a marvellous time, and felt comfortable and pampered--just right for a holiday. There were easy day trips, and opportunities for beach walks, walks in Castle Park, enjoying the pool and just relaxing on the deck at the end of the day, enjoying the human and machine silence, and the lovely sounds of nature.

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

The pictures don't show how beautiful this home is. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Holland. The area was very interesting.Lots of cute shops in Holland and Saugatuck. The home met all our needs with my elderly father and plenty of room for all 9 people.

Wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

What a great house for a big family or extended family!

Bedrooms: 5 bedrooms, including the great kids' room, complete with loft. Master bedroom is large and very comfortable! There is a second smaller master bedroom downstairs as well. The other 2 bedrooms both have twin beds.

Bathrooms - 4 bathrooms - 2 with showers (one with a wonderful rain shower head) One bathroom has a very nice Jacuzzi, which got a lot of use!

Kitchen - the kitchen is very nice; upscale appliances, any dish, pot pan, utensil, etc. that you can think of. A nice table that holds around 7-8 people comfortably plus some bar stools by the counter. The kitchen opens into the...

Dining Room - large table that holds 12 people. A must for a large family vacation. Fireplace.

Living room - comfortable with large tv and gaming system. Fireplace in living room. 2 large couches, perfect for chatting or playing games on the coffee table.

Upstairs family room area - we loved this room!! Books and games, just a great casual area, has window seat that easily accommodates 2 adults, with their tea and books. Also has two comfortable chairs for sitting as well. A nice place to be by yourself but because it's right above the living room, you still feel like you are part of the "action."

Beach - the beach is wonderful! There were 4-5 beach chairs in the living room closet. We loved the "singing sand" of Lake Michigan and what a nice beach to just relax and enjoy the view. The water temps were very cold, but that didn't stop my 12 yo from going in. The sand is very soft and the views are beautiful.

The Castle - small lending library open to guests. Plus it's a Castle, how cool is that? A nice walk from the house.

The house is not close to any other homes, which gives you great views and a lot of privacy.

The owner will email you a large document of directions, instructions, etc. Any question we had about anything that week was answered in there. Especially pay attention to the directions; it's a little tricky at the end and her directions were invaluable. Do NOT plan to arrive after dark; you don't want to be driving that road for the first time at night.

The owner was also very responsive throughout the whole process. If we were ever back in the area we would love to come back!
