Why The Owner chose Gold Country & High Sierra

Our family built this small vacation resort with our own hands. The logs for the Lodge came right from the property and were hand peeled by our two sons.

What makes this lodge unique

The uniqueness of this property is that it's so private, so beautiful, and yet so close to all the great things the High Sierras has to offer. Everyone is always amazed that this place is even here, but more amazed that it is open to the public to use.

Awesome experience

  • 5 of 5

My son and new daughter in law were married in August at the hideout. It was an exceptional experience on all fronts.

I had visited the site a couple of times in advance so I was aware of its distinctive mountain beauty and the friendliness of the owners, BJ and Tom. Despite this, the overall experience was well beyond my expectations. Some highlights:

- the weather was perfect

- Tom and BJ and Dusty were there to ensure that everything went well throughout the three day period. The trick was they were not intrusive; but little things like setting up the campfire after dinner were great.

- the facilities were even nicer that I expected after a couple of advance visits. This is clearly a labor of love for the owners and their attention to detail is clearly evident through the main house and saloon in particular.

- we used most of the amenities including swimming in the pond, partying in the hot tub and camping and RVing in the camping area. All went off without a hitch.

- and their set up for the wedding itself is idealic.

If you are looking for a nontraditional wedding site with some adventure, I can not recommend this highly enough. Check it out; but do so well in advance. By the way, there is no curfew ...

Magical Place with Incredible People

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I got married at the HideOut on a beautiful Tuesday in July. We had been out to Open Houses on the property twice before our stay, but nothing compared to the few days "of our own" that we got to spend there with family, friends, and the Hoovers. Tom, BJ, Dusty, and the kiddos (I think Josh was "off") were so incredibly welcoming, helpful, and down to earth, and always professional. I agree with fellow reviewer and Tahoe local, Christina, who said all the right things. This place is close enough to still consider it "Tahoe", but gets you far enough away from the craziness so you can feel at peace. It has something for everyone, from camping to "glamping" or a luxurious lodge feel. The HideOut is amazing because the Hoovers are amazing!! They put their hearts into every detail-- the newly built barn, the beautiful campground bathrooms, the amazing gargantuan hot tub, handling the recycling/trash, monitoring the fire pits, details in all the bedrooms/bathrooms, kitchens stocked with utensils/pots/pans, helping us hire local folks for shuttles and other help-- all while keeping such a friendly and mellow attitude. We were able to "unplug" from our cell phones and laptops for a few days and just enjoy each other. We had friends and family tell us they haven't been that relaxed in *years*, and now, even a month later, we still have people talking about how amazing the HideOut is. We could not agree more.

A few notes for those planning your own wedding out there-- The HideOut is an amazing "blank slate" for the wedding of your dreams. You aren't bogged down with the same restrictions as other wedding venues-- the place is yours to explore and make your own! Tom and BJ have a LOT of experience and can make good recommendations. Take advantage of the Open House to meet some vendors and ask questions. I have NO COMPLAINTS about my experience, because I think I realized early on that this place is not a banquet hall, ski resort, or country club that has "their way" or "required vendors" or stuff like that. But that means YOU have to put in the work up front to make it what you want when you get there! If you don't want to be hassled by the details and decisions, hire a great event/wedding planner, but DO NOT pass this place up! There's nowhere else like it. And don't forget to bring bug spray, sunscreen, and a flashlight/headlamp!

Had my Dream Wedding at the Hideout!

  • 5 of 5

Had my dream wedding at The Hideout. Rehearsal dinner in the western saloon followed by and old west poker tournament, perfect ceremony in their beautifully kept site, and the reception went all night long from the dance floor to a bluegrass bonfire. BJ and Tom, were so helpful and supportive, I felt like they were a part of the family be the end of the stay. Having everything in one place really brought everyone together and facilitated life long memories instead of one whirlwind wedding day. Every aspect of this place is well thought out. Copper tub in the bridal sweet, huge hot tub under the stars, tons of room for games and activities... could go on forever. Being a Tahoe local, it was fun to get away from the bustle and go somewhere new, and it was of course fun for the out of town guests alike. Has accommodations fit for the outdoorsy type, as well as city slickers looking for a comfortable getaway. Already want to save for a 10 or 20 year marriage celebration back at The Hideout. Truly a treasure and gift to get to stay at this wonderful place!

Perfect Wedding Site for the Outdoors Type

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I held our wedding here in July 2012 and we were more than extremely pleased with the location and Tom and BJs professionalism. They helped out with many of the small chores that we didn't foresee before we even thought to ask about them. The property and surroundings are simply majestic. There's a LOT to love about this place and its humble story. Do be a bit careful about the date selection for your event. One reviewer noted muddy roads but that was after the epic snowfall during the winter of 2010-11. We toured the Hideout in mid-June 2011 (2 weeks before her visit) and there was still about 10 feet of snow on the ground.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The place is perfect. We booked the Hideout for our wedding site unseen. We did not view the property until a month before the wedding. And everything was perfect. Tom and BJ are great, they are there to help in any way possible and let you have the time of your life. The day after the wedding Tom was gracious enough to take time out of his day and walk a group of us through the woods and show us the way to a nice little lake a short hike away. Their main rule don't burn the place down. The landscape is perfect with the grass ceremony area, small meadow, grass reception area, old wooden wagon and dinner surrounded by trees. Your guests can mingle and walk the grounds and soak up the scenery while you do photos. After a night of dancing, relax the night away in the giant hot tub and take a midnight swim in the lake. The grounds are flat except for the drive in and the small walk up a hill to the lodge and saloon. Everything is accessible for the elderly and handicap.Word of advice if you plan on bringing a trailer with a good amount of stuff ie beer wine all your rentals bring a truck with a big engine or pucker butt hill might take some additional man power to get your loaded down suv over the hill. Words can not describe this place enough, it is not a matter of if but when we will go back.

Dream Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I got married at The HideOut on July 6, 2013. It has only been two weeks and we already wish we could go back! We spent 3 full days with friends and family soaking in the beauty of this magical place in the woods. Our entire wedding party stayed in the lodge and the saloon and some of our immediate family rented the "Lookout," a separate property within walking distance (right across the lake). The main lodge of The HideOut is absolutely stunning. It is a perfectly luxurious rustic mountain home. The fact that the owner and his sons built it with their own hands makes it even more amazing! The saloon is AWESOME. It is straight out of an old western movie. We hosted our rehearsal dinner with 75 guests in the saloon and it was a total blast!

Throughout the weekend, our friends and family enjoyed lounging on the large deck, swimming and fishing in the lake, hiking, playing pool in the saloon, and stargazing in the amazing granite hot tub. We even did yoga on the deck over the water in the mornings-amazing! It was nice to see everyone "unplug" for the weekend and really tune into their surroundings. Everyone, from the city folk to the nature loving crowd, really appreciated their time away from the real world.

We couldn't be happier that we chose to begin our marriage at The HideOut. Our friends and family still cannot get over how "fun, unique, and BEAUTIFUL" our wedding was. Tom & BJ were always there when we needed something and were such a great help making sure everything went smoothly the day of the wedding. Like many others have said, they really are great people and the HideOut wouldn't be as special of a place without them! If you are considering the HideOut as your wedding venue, I would recommend it without a doubt! Just remember, don't underestimate the crazy amount of work and planning that goes into having a 3 day celebration in the woods. Our wedding was a labor of love but I know that everyone would say it was completely worth it!

Thank you Tom & BJ for creating this incredible place and for sharing it with us. The HideOut is a dream and will always hold a very special place in our hearts. We can't wait to come back!
