About Hillary Becton

After summering in Maine since infancy, in 1978 my husband decided to become a full time resident. Living here year round has been a decision neither of us have ever regretted. We are both artists and the natural beauty which surrounds us even in the spring and winter months is intoxicating. The thought of going anywhere else just doesn't occur.

Hillary Becton purchased this cottage in 1970

Why Hillary Becton chose Blue Hill

The Danforth Cottage was part of my husband's family estate and originally built by the man who designed the Danforth anchor. It is surrounded by woods and built only 30 feet from the shore. The views from the deck and the living room picture window are delightful. There are two pocket beaches easily accessed from the shore by stairs where rented paddle boats can be launched. It is within walking distance to the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club, which has a fabulous junior program open to the public, where all of our children learned how to sail.

What makes this cottage unique

On cold foggy days there is nothing better than sitting by the fire and reading or working on a jigsaw puzzle. On sunny days, sitting outside on the deck or on the bench at the shore contemplating a swim can't be beat. The town of Blue Hill has a wonderful farmers' market, a food co-op and two grocery stores, There are fine galleries. restaurants. a great library and a very good hospital should the need ever arise. MERI offers educational programs on the marine environment throughout the summer and Kneisel Hall has a fabulous music program. It is less than an hours drive to the famous Acadia National Park. Between eating lobster and gazing at the view, the summers in Maine fly by....

An absolute pleasure

  • 5 of 5

We just completed our third stay at the Danforth cottage. It is a pleasure and the owner cannot be more helpful. Surrounded on three sides by beautiful pine forest, the cottage has an expansive, wonderful deck. Big, smooth rocks descend to the Blue Hill Harbor. Blue Hill is one of those special places with a strong sense of community and not just a place for visitors. The Blue Hill Co-op has a welcoming vibe, Blue Hill Books reminds us of how wonderful vibrant a bookstore can be, Bucklyn Coffee make you feel like you live there. The house is clean, well-maintained, and while the kitchen isn't modern, it is very well-equipped. We love this place.

Fabulus Cottage on Quiet Penninsula

  • 5 of 5

We chose this Blue Hill cottage due to proximity to MDI in the hope that it would be close enough to essential needs but maybe off the beaten path. It was all that. The cottage is close to Blue Hill but very very quiet and secluded. THe home itself is charming and everything you need for your stay is there. Kitchen was very well stocked - even a Lobster pot! Our only complaint was the electric heat did not work and it was quite cold overnight. We managed to warm up with a fire in the beautiful fireplace in the evening and as we were out and about during the day, we didn't mind. The location, amenities and condition of the cottage was perfect we would stay again without hesitation.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay despite the cold! We try to be clear that the cottage is not winterized and there is no heat source beyond the fireplace and two portable heaters. We dismantled the electric baseboards years ago to avoid what had become huge costs to us!

We spent a week in early July at Danforth Cottage and had an absolutely wonderful time. The cottage is just so simple and so very comfortable. The location is fantastic. Could not have asked for a more wonderful location. We spent much of our time on the wonderful deck overlooking the beautiful Blue Hill Harbor. You can be in the sun if you wish but there are also some beautiful trees in the front of the house that help keep the deck cool and comfortable. And then there is the breeze off the water! We swam and kayaked right off the rocks and low tide beach in front of the cottage. We had ate at the cottage a few nights having lobster and grilled chicken. The Blue Hill Co-Op and Tradewinds grocery are great stores that are close by. We also had wonderful dinners out at both the Brooklin Inn and Arborvine. Our dinners at both restaurants were absolutely terrific. We are so looking forward to returning next year!

OUr stay in Blue Hill

  • 5 of 5

This is our fourth year to return to the Danforth cottage in Blue Hill. The photos and description accurately describe what to expect. The house is in good condition and very comfortable for 4-6 people. The views are spectacular and the sunsets could not be better. The house is well equipped with comfortable beds, a very complete kitchen and beautiful stone fireplace. lIt is everything a summer cottage should be but the outstanding feature is the broad deck overlooking the water.

Nearby activites include boating, swimming, hiking, birding, lots of art galleries, two excellent restaurants in Blue Hill plus small local inexpensive places to eat. The local produce available at the farmers markets can't be beat. Within 10 minutes is a full service super market, Kneisel Hall for classical musical performances as well as local theatrical productions.

Acadia National Park hosts a large variety of activities and is only about one hour away. Travelling south, about 1 1/2 hours you are in Camden and Rockport (two outstanding art museums)as well as ferries to some of the out islands which make for a lovely day trip. There is also an excellent cooking school very close to Camden.

The owner has been very helpful with aswering questions, assist in the practicalities of the stay and helping to resolve any issues which may arise.

Fantastic Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

What a spectacularly beautiful place. This cottage was exactly what the doctor ordered. The quiet mornings down at the beach right below the house, afternoons wandering the woods with the dog, or evenings visiting galleries and eating lobster on the deck, nothing could be more relaxing. I truly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a break, it's perfect.
