About Jan Oden

My husband and I have lived in historic downtown Wilmington since 1987. Wilmington has been a wonderful home for us, our five children, our two dogs. and two cats. We enjoy boating on the Cape Fear River and in the waterway and sound, we bike downtown and meet friends at the many outdoor concerts and festivals, and we spend time surfing and sunning at the beach. I hope that our guests who stay in our downtown 'get-away' will learn to love our area as much as we do!

Jan Oden purchased this house in 1996

Why Jan Oden chose Wilmington

Our first home was just a couple of blocks from this house. The neighbors are wonderful and the sights and sounds are refreshing. I love being able to stroll downtown and enjoy the Cape Fear Riverwalk after dinner. The festivals, the antique stores, the restaurants, and the frequent fireworks displays over the river always provide entertainment for our family and guests. There is usually a choice of live music venues and an excellent selection of local theater productions to choose from as well. We are glad to be able to share our little part of the world with others!

What makes this house unique

This lovely home is close to restaurants, shops, waterfront, museums, historic homes, etc. The Castle Street antique district is right around the corner, the public boat ramp is at the foot of Castle Street, the Wilmington Children's Museum is 5 blocks away. The many downtown restaurants and bars provide an exciting nightlife! The periodic fireworks displays over the river and the downtown festivals and parades are totally worthwhile. The Fourth Friday Artwalk is something to look forward to year round. The UNCW campus is only 5 miles away and it is just a short drive to Wrightsville Beach or to Pleasure Island, which includes Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, the site of the battle of Ft. Fisher, and the North Carolina Aquarium. It is especially nice to be downtown for the North Carolina Azalea Festival festivities in the spring as well as for Riverfest in the fall. Most importantly, the view of the setting sun over the Cape Fear River from the front porch is priceless.

This was an awesome experience! Jan Oden was extemely helpful, accommodating and gracious. We were a party of 10 adults ranging in age from 17 to 60 and everyone was comfortable and complimentary of the house, sleeping arrangements and overall experience. Even though it was a little chillier than we are used to, the front porch and back patio were a welcome delight for everyone. We cooked a tradtional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and were very pleased that it was just like being at home, especially for our son who returned form Afghanistan 5 days earlier. I cannot praise the owners or the property enough as our experience far exceeeded our expectations!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely description of your stay in our Wayside Cottage. I am so happy to have been a part of your family's Thanksgiving reunion with your son. Being from Louisiana, you were probably not prepared for that North Carolina cold snap that we had! It was a pleasure getting to know you through our phone conversations. Have a wonderful Christmas season and come back to see us soon!

We had a wonderful stay in your home. We watched the fireworks with the rest of the neighbors on the front porch. How nice it was not to have to drive in traffic to view the wonderful display that Wilmington offers. Your home is so close to all the area beaches and we drove to a different one each day! Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure beach - so many to choose from. We like to eat dinner out so coming back to Wilmington each evening for dinner was perfect! The home has every thing we needed and was well stocked! We love to make our own breakfast so having the kitchen there to cook in was great! Thanks for making our stay so memorable - we will be calling again to reserve "our place"!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for referring to our downtown cottage as a home. It makes me feel good to know that our guests are comfortable enough there to feel at home. I am so glad that you were able to take advantage of some of the area attractions and the wonderful downtown restaurants. We are very lucky to have so many to choose from. I will look forward to having you as our guests again in the future!

Lovely home, but not restful or clean

  • 2 of 5

Came to Wilmington to attend a wedding for the weekend. When we first arrived, the home was an older, lovely home with charming antiques. We noticed across the street was a ramp to the highway and the road noise was very loud. The beds are lumpy, springy and squeeky. The linens were smelly and the towels were clearly dirty and smelly. The combination of the road noise, uncomfortable beds and dirty linens made our stay unpleasant. There were toys, a high chair, and a crib in the home -- great if you have kids, not so much if you don't. The refrigerator door was full of the owner's condiments. It is a month later and we haven't received our deposit back -- not because there was damage, but because the owner has been busy. We rent VRBO homes regularly and this was the dirtiest and loudest home we have ever rented.

Great Girls Getaway Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Wayside Cottage is a really charming place to stay...very clean and neat. Four ladies went for a long "girls" weekend and had a wonderful time. House is in a good location...close to great restaurants and shopping...everything we were looking for. Would recommend this cottage to family and friends.
