Solar Powered Authentic Log Cabin on Quiet Lake with 120 Acres Private Forest

Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Our solar powered log cabin is located on 90 acre Lehto Lake. We own 120 wooded acres surrounded by another 700 acres of state land. Most of Lehto Lake's shoreline is undeveloped because it is owned by a nature conservancy. There is no public access to the lake and no other properties visible from our cabin. You most likely will not see another person during your stay so you are guaranteed privacy and quiet. This is a place to relax.

We are 45 minutes from the busy tourist attractions of Minocqua, and 1 hr. from the quiet beauty of Lake Superior. You can fish or hunt all day, walk or snowshoe the old logging trails, kayak or canoe around the island and through cattails in the adjoining marsh, pick wild berries, or just sit around the large fire pit and enjoy amazing sunsets. Several other lakes and the Flambeau Flowage are nearby, providing excellent additional fishing opportunities. Bike, ATV and snowmobile trails are accessible from our property. Two kayaks, a canoe, and a 14 ft. aluminum boat with a trolling motor are available for your use. We are also near some of the best cross country and downhill skiing in the midwest!

Our cabin is built from hand-scribed logs taken from our property (not an imitation log kit!) As a custom cabinet maker, I have put fine details in the cabin - granite and Corian countertops, hardwood floors, ceramic tile floors and shower, etc. The 'master bedroom' is located in the loft which contains a double bed, recliner sofa, love seat, and TV. A bedroom in the lower level has 2 twin beds. A sleeper sofa on the main level provides additional sleeping. Because we love to cook the kitchen is extremely functional and fully stocked, but our favorite place to cook is outside over an open fire. The lower level rec room contains a ping pong table for evening or rainy day fun.

In addition to solar power we have a back-up generator which automatically turns on and off if additional power is needed. The main source of heat is a wood stove for which we provide plenty of split wood and kindling inside the cabin. There is also a furnace in the lower level which supplements the wood stove. You will never run out of electricity of be cold.

If you check out the Google Map it will show the cabin location further from the lake than it is. Google does not recognize our address so it places the cabin too far north on Randall Lake Rd. Also, the driveway is 1 mile long so even at the proper location it looks like the cabin is not near the lake, but it definitely is. I've located the cabin with a point of interest.

In case you have small children, the railings in the loft and on the staircases now have spindles (some of the pictures were taken before they were installed) so you don't have to worry about safety.

About The Owner

Our family lives in Lac du Flambeau, WI (40 minutes from the rental cabin) where I am self-employed as a custom cabinet maker.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2003

Why The Owner chose Northwest

We didn't build this as a rental property, but as a second home. Because our business is located at our home, we need a place to get away from work. This property is the perfect location - quiet and relaxing. When our daughter was in college we began renting it out and it allowed her to graduate debt free. Because of the large clientele we built up who wanted to return we have continued to share our quiet get-away with others.

What makes this cabin unique

The peacefulness! On most of our visits we never hear another human, just the wildlife.

Secluded cabin in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was a lovely gem hidden in the woods. It had everything we needed with plenty of linens, dishes, blankets and pillows. We found the cabin to be clean, comfortable and very private. The owner was extremely helpful and very responsive. We communicated many times before and after our stay. The recommendations and Welcome Book were extremely beneficial. We would recommend the Friday Fish Fry at Wintergreen Bar and Grill as well as a meal at Pea Patch and Frontier Inn. During our stay we shopped in Minocqua and highly recommend the drive to see the waterfalls along the Black River north of Ironwood in the UP of Michigan. My only recommendation would be a larger bed in the loft. I would definitely recommend this listing to anyone looking in the area for a quiet get away with spouse or family.

Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful winter weekend in this cabin. Although it was very cold outside, the cabin was warm and cozy. We made an ice rink on the lake and played hockey, went cross-country skiing on the lake and sled on the driveway hills. One day we went skiing to Indian Head which was about an hour drive and it was worth driving because the place was beautiful, great slopes with no lines and very few skiers. We will definitely come back one day.

A Special Place

  • 5 of 5

If you want solitude, beautiful surroundings, scenic north woods hiking/fishing and a clean private comfortable log cabin with everything you need, this is the place. We enjoyed our stay here immensely. The cabin is fully equipped and the owners are very responsive and friendly. We have stayed at many north woods cabins, this one tops the list.

The nearby hiking/walking trails are beautiful and located just outside the cabin off the mile long drive way. The lake is like a post card and has awesome sunsets. We are both seniors (65+) and had no problem getting around. The owners have put together a very well done book with any and all information you might need about the cabin and surrounding area. There is much to see in the surrounding area within a short drive.

A good measure of the likeability of a VRBO unit is whether you like it enough to want to come back again. This place warrants definite return visits.

Great Hideaway on a private lake

  • 5 of 5

We booked this cabin for a week in early August with our kids and our dogs and had a blast.

Highs: the cabin is spacious, well-stocked, and beautiful for a 'cabin'. There are some basic staples in the kitchen and it is pretty easy to cook your meals there. The canoe and kayaks are serviceable. The lake is quite private--we had one other person there for a day, but otherwise we had the whole place to ourselves. The lake is full of iron so has low visibility, but was great for swimming. We had some beautiful sunsets on the lake, just us. The drive to Manatowish Waters or Boulder Junction is not long, so we had an easy time getting out for biking. The hosts were pleasant and accommodating, bringing us a new trolling motor for the boat, and providing a great binder explaining the solar system and the surrounding area. Our dogs had a great time--the lot is private enough that they were able to be themselves! Small issues of wear with a screen door and the boat motor were, to me, expected for a private residence and did not impact my stay.

Lows: the lake is surrounded by wetlands, so bugs were an issue. Although this is to be expected in the north woods in August, I would definitely recommend a healthy dose of repellent. Cell phone coverage is spotty, and forget about wi-fi (we have US Cellular). The beds for up to 4 guests are great, but the pull-out sofa is a bit worn. The linens were very clean, but a full-grown adult might not be as comfortable. The lake access is close and there are steps, but the actual bank is a bit steep; anyone with restricted mobility will have trouble. Again, none of these issues interfered with our stay.

Recommendations: the lake is quiet for the most part, so it's a great lake for kids, stand-up paddle-boarding, and kayaking (keeping in mind there isn't a sandy beach). We like biking, and the Vilas County trail in Manatowish Waters is really awesome. Park at the community center and you can go up to 40 miles on paved trails that are very scenic. Aqualand Ale House in Boulder Junction provides a nice respite with wi-fi and a trendy menu. Bayfield and the Apostle islands are about 90 min or so away if you're interested in a day trip--a bit far but do-able.

Owner's Response: We're glad you had so much fun. Thanks for your honest impressions. We'll definitely be repairing the screen door and the sleeper sofa. As far as the mosquites - yes, we have them. The lake isn't surrounded by wetlands, but there are 2 spots of wetlands across the lake about 1 mile from the cabin. The remainder of the shoreline is forest. This has been an extremely rainy summer (an hour northwest of the cabin roads have been closed due to flooding) so the wetlands are wetter and the mosquitoes are worse. For the first time in 8 years of renting our renter's reviews are mentioning mosquitoes.

Beautiful and clean

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful, clean cottage in a very private out of the way environment. It was well stocked with essentials and the owners were very easy to communicate with before and during the trip. The mosquitoes were really bad while we were there so we would suggest bringing yard fogger. We would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a private retreat in the northwoods.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and your honesty about the mosquitoes. They can be very annoying, but as you said that is true for any cabin in northern Wisconsin. We know because we live just 40 minutes from the cabin. We have found and other renters agree that Yard Guard and Thermacells do the trick.
