Great vacation...bad aftertaste!

  • 1 of 5

We were wondering prior of booking, why this beautiful house didn't have any reviews? Today we wonder no more! We were 2 families (3 kids ages 5-8) that spent 8 nights, we prepaid for, back in March, including cleaning fees! We spent a wonderfull week in this place! House has all amenities, maybe too many...lots of indian artifacts throughout the house, art objects, appliances. All perfect, until we left and had been unrightfully accused of a missing basket with indian artifacts, "quite valuable", yet kept in the garage? We couldn't stop but wonder, why wasn't it kept in one of the many locked closets instead, where owner kept personal items, but been left in the garage? Owner was fully aware that 3 kids were coming and their ages! Owner offered to come and greet us, before our stay. She didn't show up, however she came to take pictures, together with the cleaning crew, at our departure! Was nice meeting her at last! We had been accused of trivial damages (broken glass of a $5 value (true claim), an outlet cover of $0.99, and of other more substantial damages, such as one burner of the stove (out of 6, we didn't even used them all) not working and needing a repairman?, refrigerator ice maker not working when we got there, my husband tried to fix it, little things that we could have reported them, however being on vacation, we didn't think any of them or to take pictures prior of using them. That is NOT why we went there! We've been in many places in US and Canada, we take 1-2 vacations/year like this. We never had complaints of leaving a house in dirty condition, using too many towels (why towels weren't locked in the closets, leaving out just as many as the owner considered normal usage?) We paid a cleaning fee, not to clean ourselves! We were on vacation to enjoy, not to count the artifacts, towels we used, take pictures of house's items, make a report of what's working or not! However we should have: closets were being locked, cabinets and refrigerator full of owner/previous tenants' left overs...we had to work around them and keep our clothes inside our luggages for 9 days! However, our stay was great, despite these small issues...with a very bad aftertaste! If you have other choices and there are plenty in the area, with less head ache, avoid this place and go elsewhere! (Owner charged us, unauthorized, the entire security dep. for 2 broken ordinary items and extra cleaning :( Be preapred to pay for any item/issue owner might need replaced or fixed!

Owner's Response: In all of the years that we have rented this beautiful log home and all of the wonderful guests we have had, we have never had such a disrespectful & destructive group stay there. They kept the housekeepers waiting outside for over an hour beyond their agreed departure time & upon entering , the home was found in extremely dirty condition with items broken & missing. An additional housekeeper had to be called in and it took a total of 15 hours to clean and prepare the home for the next guests. I felt very badly because the arriving guests had to wait until 5:30 before being able to occupy the home. The kitchen was extremely dirty and 1 ½ hours spent just cleaning the stove top, with one of the gas burners broken from abuse, requiring a repairman to fix. The freezer door was left open at some point during their stay and required defrosting. Cookware ruined, and an expensive serving bowl broken. We have never kept anyone’s security deposit before & although we did keep a portion of their security deposit for losses and damages, the actual costs to us as the owners was considerably & substantially higher. This is something that I would never want to do. We have custom copper caps on the deck railings, some of these were removed (probably by their children) and found laying under the deck and in the landscaping, two have still not been recovered and will be costly and difficult to replace. Other items were found carelessly broken. All of these items have been documented and verified by my grounds keeper and housekeepers. The most disturbing was a basket of quite valuable Native American artifacts found missing upon their departure. This can be confirmed by myself and my housekeepers who thoroughly inventory the home upon each guests departure. We have never had this sort of thing happen before, ever… I’m heartbroken by this experience and if I had to go through something like this again, I’m afraid I could not bring myself to continue to share this special home. That would be quite sad for me, because I truly have enjoyed sharing this magnificent property with all of the wonderful, caring, people from all over the world that we had had an opportunity to meet. As these guests mentioned in their review everything in the home was “perfect” upon their arrival. This is a truly a high-end, luxury, hand crafted, log home & I take great joy in making sure that all of our guests enjoy a wonderful & relaxing vacation........
