Why Kelly Gilligan chose Seneca Lake

In 2009, the Finger Lakes region was named the number one lakeside retreat in the world by the editors of Shermans Travel, beating out better known resort areas such as Lago di Como (Italy), Lake Mead (USA) and Lake Como (USA.) The editors also cited Keuka and Seneca Lakes as being “widely-regarded as the most beautiful of the Finger Lakes and well equipped for tourists and recreational activities.”

What makes this cottage unique

Here are our top 10 things that we enjoy doing when we visit Keuka Lake. 1. Rent a boat or take a boat ride to the Switzerland Inn to have lunch on the porch and enjoy the great view of the Bluff! 2. Boat down to Hammondsport. Dock the boat and head into town for some shopping and an ice cream at the Park Inn! 3. Drive just north of Penn Yan on Sunday morning at 9:30 and watch all the horse-drawn Mennonite buggies going to church. 4. Have a wonderful dinner at the Village Tavern or the Union Block Bistro in Hammondsport. 5. Visit the many fine wineries on Keuka lake and take in the stunning views! 6. Have a cocktail on the patio at sunset at the Esperanza Mansion. 7. Go shopping in Penn Yan. Our favorite store is Longs Cards & Books. 8. Go to the Hayes Auction Barn for the weekly Saturday night auction at 6:00pm. Great finds include beautiful antiques to everything under the kitchen sink! 9. Order the fried chicken dinner at the Seneca Farms in Penn Yan. 10. Have a bottle of wine in the middle of the lake at sunset! 11. Ok, so there are more than 10… Visit the Windmill Farm and Craft Market on Saturday mornings. A great place to get breakfast or lunch!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the nice welcome bottle of wine and for sharing your home away from home with us and also for your friendship. We enjoyed our time on Keuka Lake. We didn't lack anything and loved the porches right on the water.

Beautiful Lake Location

  • 5 of 5

I live an hour north of the Finger Lakes and have spent a lot of time on most them. It Shore Is Nice is the ideal spot and rental for a relaxing, carefree stay on Keuka Lake. This was my 2nd summer renting here and I plan to return next summer. The place is immaculate and Kelly thinks of every last detail to make your arrival and stay relaxing and easy. Coffee on the kitchen level deck each morning lets you watch the lake and surrounding area wake up each day and the lower deck let's you snooze or read with the lake as your view. There are 2 kayaks, a canoe and a sunfish available for you to use so you can enjoy the water minutes after you arrive. The location is great - about half way between Penn Yan and Hammondsport- be sure to explore the later and drive around the lake (perfect for an overcast day) and stop at wineries and antique shops. There is so many things to do in the area or just sit and read a book on the dock while enjoying the peacefulness of Keuka Lake.

Amazing Lake Views

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at It Shore Is Nice. Everything was super clean when we arrived. The owners were very accessible and answered all questions. The kitchen was small but set up nicely for cooking and we loved the outdoor grill and table. It was the perfect size for our family of four, with kids 7 and 10 years old. The kids loved looking for beach glass on the beach, jumping off the dock, swimming for hours and taking kayak rides. Their favorite game was playing pirates in the canoe, which fit all four of us. Parents loved being able to watch kids from the comfort of the two decks and watching the amazing views. The house is on a quiet street that was perfect to run or walk on and even had a small farmette that sold fresh veggies and herbs. Nearby restaurants: the Switz was ok food, but the service was warm and friendly; Village Tavern in Hammondsport had a great wine flight; there's a great candy shop in Penn Yan on the main drag; our favorite was Olney Place, right up the street - we had great sandwiches and it became our go to place for quick groceries and a great local beer selection. Activities: we rented a pontoon boat from Morgan Marina in Penn Yan which was awesome - the kids loved the tube; Watkins Glen and a trip to Lodi point on Senaca lake to look for more beach glass; Ithaca was great - the Museum of the Earth was fascinating and the downtown is sweet; our favorite little trip was to Eggleston Glen, within walking distance of the cottage. We hiked upstream to a very small but impressive waterfall and the kids loved exploring the whole time. Mostly we loved relaxing and hanging out on the dock and in the water. This was the perfect place for us - quiet, beautiful and close to lots of activities, if we felt like it.
