Chelsea is a neighborhood on the West Side of Manhattan that mixes post-industrial buildings with mid-nineteenth century brick and brownstone townhouses. Chelsea has recently developed into an extremely lively art gallery neighborhood to the west, which has spawned numerous excellent restaurants. There are movie theaters, great shopping and all conveniences along Eighth Avenue and further west. To the east, both 5th and 6th Avenues between 14th and 23rd Streets are lively shopping areas with a huge variety clothing and specialty of stores. A ten-minute walk south puts you in the lively 'meatpacking' district, popular for its restaurants, boutiques and clubs, or the heart of Greenwich Village, while the same time to the north gets you to 34th Street and Madison Square Garden or Macy’s. The famous Chelsea Piers Sports Complex is a ten minute walk west on the Hudson River with health and fitness facilities (pool, gym, classes, rock climbing etc.) rollerblading, two ice skating rinks, bowling alley, driving range and a wide variety of children's programs. The High Line, the old elevated rail line has been converted into an elevated park and a significant section of it is now open to the public, with an entrance only a block away. There are endless things to do in this neighborhood and a wide variety of great restaurants.
A, C, E trains to 14th or 23rd Street and 8th Avenue; the #1 train to 18th Street and the # 2 and 3 trains to 14th Street at 7th Avenue. (All reachable on foot within 5 minutes.)
My wife and I reside in the building. We have two adult children. I run a small publishing business out of my home and am on premises most of the time. I grew up in New York. My wife and I love to travel. We are very sociable and enjoy welcoming guests from all over the world.
Richard Thorne purchased this apartment in 1996
We chose to live in Chelsea in the mid 90's when it was fast developing into a real neighborhood with development plans in place for the nearby meatpacking district and Highline. It has since become a lively and interesting place to visit or reside. The rental apartment is in the same town house as the owners' permanent residence.
We are within five minutes walking of the Meatpacking district, Highline and new Whitney Museum. We also have easy access to museums, art galleries, theater, night life and many different cultural amenities, as well as to the Bronx Zoo, Bronx and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey.
Richard, Lesley and "Sherlock",
The apartment is great. We have enjoyed our stay immensely and hope for a return trip later next year. Thanks for your hospitality and assistance with bags, restaurants, etc.
A great apartment in a wonderful location for exploring NYC. Clean and well-maintained. Exactly as described and well-stocked. Richard was always available by phone or email.
Thank you to Richard, Leslie and Billy. This was a perfect apartment and neighbourhood for my stay.
I stayed in this apartment for three weeks and it was perfect for my purposes.
Richard was prompt in replying to my emails, and his building manager, Billy, was also very helpful. Richard and Lesley have compiled a folder of handy info for both the apartment and the local area. Double thumbs up on the Dan Dan recommendation!
The apartment is neat, clean and tidy with quality furnishings, which is often not the norm. While I was there by myself for most of the time, when two friends came to visit, it still felt roomy and there was enough glasses etc for four people. The bedroom has a very quiet ceiling fan which I used on occasion, and I think the soft white noise of the fan helped me re-acclimatise my ears to the New York street sounds those first few nights. There are plenty of clean towels and extra soap etc. and behind the bathroom mirror is a mini exchange thing happening where I took some cotton buds when I ran out, but left some shampoo. Same with the pantry cupboard, there were condiments and coffee filters etc already there, and I replaced the Tabasco and left a few unopened things for the next person. The hot water never ran out, and the heating cut in on a couple of cool days. And the windows open which I appreciated.
Because the streets in the area are busy with people until quite late, I always felt completely safe wandering about, and there is a nice vibe too. Positioned about five minutes walk from two different Metro stations (= 7 different lines), it is very easy to get pretty much anywhere, and the station on 14th St & 8th Av has an elevator (lift) which made travelling to JFK on the direct E line very easy.
It's also a great location for eating: close to some very pleasant cafes and a plethora of small, ethnically diverse restaurants. There is also a great small chain multiplex Cinema - Bow-Tie - on 23rd St @ 8th Av. It's about 10 minutes walk away, with very comfy seating and has cut price ticketing before midday each day.
It's a twenty minute walk to Union Square with its farmers markets on some days of the week and arts markets on others, and some higher end restaurants. There is a Wholefoods store and a huge Barnes & Nobel bookshop also on Union square, and the glorious The Strand bookshop is nearby. I did a lot of walking, with the walk to Central Park (72nd Street) taking about an hour. Try walking the Highline to 34th and then continuing up 8th Av.
I really enjoyed my stay, both in NYC and at the appartment. I will be back!
Our long weekend stay at Richard and Lesley's apartment was another wonderful time. The location is great and Richard provides great value in the apartment. He is a pleasure to work with and responds promptly. There are many little touches to the apartment that make it feel like home. I have tried a few other apartments (only because this one was booked) and have found none compare.
This is a very comfortable, well appointed small apartment in a great location. The bed is comfortable, the couch in the living room is also very comfortable, the living room is spacious, the kitchen well equipped. For New York it is also pretty quiet (some car noise at night but that's pretty much it and I am very noise sensitive). The neighborhood is full of markets, cafes, restaurants, bakeries. Walking distance to the High Line. Richard responded immediately to email and was a pleasure to deal with. We would definitely stay here again.
I first discovered this terrific apt a few years ago and it's become my home away from home. The unit is exactly as it appears in the photos--there will be no surprises. It's always immaculate and is very thoughtfully stocked with useful items. The neighborhood couldn't be better with multiple subway lines, cafes, markets and the high line all just minutes away. Every side street holds a new discovery and I always try to vary my route. If you want to do more traditional tourist things Times Square, Lincoln Center etc are a quick subway ride away. I would also like to pay tribute to Richard and Lesley, who live on the premises, and couldn't be more welcoming or more accommodating.
This was my first trip to New York and traveling with my teenage son. I was nervous about where to stay and how to maneuver around the city. Thankfully we found this great apartment--the location is absolutely perfect! It is clean, well taken care of, quiet, and supplied with all you need for a great stay. The owners live in the building and are so welcoming and helpful!!! The subway is just a few blocks away, but we were also able to easily walk to some great restaurants, shops and even Empire State Building. We walked home one night from a NY Knicks game at MSG and felt completely safe. I highly recommend this apartment for a great stay!!
