About the Property

4 bed / 2 bath, spacious, quiet, private apartment by UW.

Welcome to the Shuey House, a national historic home located in Seattle’s vibrant urban neighborhood known as the "University District". We are ideally located on a quiet residential street, just a short walk to excellent grocery stores, cafes, theaters, and a wonderful Saturday farmer’s market.

The Shuey House is a convenient location for most major tourist attractions, with easy access to Downtown, Pike Place Market, Seattle Center, Greenlake, and of course the University of Washington. We are also close to Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutch, Amazon, and other major Seattle institutions for those traveling on business. Downtown is easily accessible by public transportation (bus or lightrail), and the lightrail brings you straight from the airport to the University of Washington.

This 1800 sq. ft apartment is the entire bottom (basement) level of the Shuey House, with a private, separate entrance and 2 free parking spots in the alley. Each of the 4 bedrooms are spacious, with large windows, a queen or king bed (or 2 twins if preferred), and quality bedding. The full-size kitchen has a gas range, full size refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and everything else you need for cooking. The dining room table seats 8, and the living room has a comfortable large sofa for watching TV or relaxing.

Even though this is a basement apartment, you will hardly know it. The ceilings are tall and double insulated for soundproofing, and the floors are radiant heated (warm in the winter, and cool in the summer). The kitchen and bathrooms are modern and spacious as well with plenty of light. Our own family lives upstairs in the main house and the rest of the house is not rented to any other guests. Your own entry provides privacy and is separate from our entrance at the front of the house. Though we enjoy meeting our guests, if you prefer, you can come and go without seeing us!

The shared hot tub (on owner's patio close to apartment's front door) is available for guest's to use from 10am to 8pm.

If you are looking for a great central location, quiet street, and a comfortable, clean, and affordable space for several couples, families, or even a corporate group, The Shuey House apartment is ideal.

(note: furniture shown may change as we will be making some updates when our current long term tenants leave in June, 2017. Also, the reviews shown are from the full house rental, including the yard, which we are now no longer renting...only the apartment! The yard is no longer available for guests).

About the owner: Hello. We are the Schellings. Steve (dad) is an executive director in pharmaceuticals, and Rebecca (mom) is an interior designer. We have three teenage sons (one at college, two at home), and Steve’s mom, “Oma”, also lives with us. We are a fun, outgoing family that loves to travel, meet new people and places, and spend time with friends and entertaining guests.

Why the Owner Chose Northeast Seattle, Seattle, WA, USA:
We’ve always loved old homes, and in the spring of 2000, we stumbled upon this house. It was a beautiful, turn of the century neo-classical grand home, in a great neighborhood, but was in need of some attention. We spent the next 2 years restoring it back to its original grandeur, while also bringing it into the 21st century. We placed it on the National Registry of Historic Homes (Henry Owen Shuey House), and have called it our own home since.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Besides being a wonderful, unique house, it’s also a great location. The University Park neighborhood is central to everything, and urban, yet quiet. Our tree-lined street called “Professor Row” has a great mix of young families, academia, and students. One block to the West, is “The Ave” (University Way), an eclectic street of funky shops, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, and theates. Several blocks to the East, we have the “University Village”, Seattle’s swanky upscale shopping center with lovely boutiques, outdoor cafes, and Seattle’s best ice cream shop (Molly Moon’s). And if you need to get away from all the activity, walk to the end of our street where you will find a beautiful wooded park with trails and a stream that will make you forget you are in the city!
