Picturesque and charming!

Lovely little cottage, beautiful view, and nice neighbors. One who even brought over some smaller kindling to help us get a fire started in the pit for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Were there to visit with family in town, but was able to get my husband's 91 year old mother out to sit and watch the river and boats, she loved it and wanted to come out another day so we did. And even though it rained later we were able to all sit on the old porch that is now a bedroom and see out the windows and door to still enjoy the view and the company. It made for a very special family moment and gettogether. Thank you! Our dogs loved it too! First time for them meeting water and the smaller one was obsessed with watching the leaves float by from the dock.

Rainy Day Review

  • 4 of 5

I checked in on Tuesday and was planning on staying until Friday even with the lousy weather which was not the fault of the people renting the cottage. The cottage was a little rough, but was what I expected from the descriptions, so I was not surprised. On Wednesday the first day of my stay however, I became very sick and had to go to an emergency room in Grand Haven. I was there alone and since telephone reception is sketchy at best I might have trouble calling for help so I decided it would be better to leave for home. I called the owner and explained my situation and told her so she would have an extra day to clean for any incoming tenants. I thanked her for the stay and said good-bye. She did refund my $200. deposit which I was expecting, however a nice touch would have been to refund the lost day or at least a partial refund since it gave her an extra day to clean. I didn't ask her for it, but it would have been nice and made me feel like my vacation was not a total loss.

Quaint, dog friendly cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We liked the location, being about halfway between Grand Valley State University and Grand Haven. Plenty of room for both dogs to run. The owner was attentive to an evening call regarding a minor plumbing issue that she had addressed the following day. Temps were in the 90's and the second bedroom window air conditioner kept the cottage comfortable. There is a nice county park about five minutes down the road that also has a boat launch, so if we stayed there again we would consider bringing our boat.

Captain's Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a great experience at The Captains Cottage on the River. We got to experience Lake Michigan beaches, golf, and downtime watching the boats go by on the river. We really enjoyed our stay and being on the west side of the state. We would definitely come back and recommend it to other families :)
