Great fishing off the dock right out the front door or by boat for miles of river and bayous. Lake Michigan is just down river with some of the most beautiful beaches around. Spend the day at the beach, downtown Grand Haven, Michigan's Adventure amusement park or at a nearby golf course, and the evening next to the camp fire along the river. Owner's Response: Thank you for your time and kind words. I love getting to know my guest a bit before they come and make sure they know a little more about the property.. I am sorry you were unable to join him , but glad your hard working man was able to get some R&R. The river out front can do wonders for that! Maybe you can join him back here someday! Thanks

summer vacation, exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

We loved our vacation here!!!! It is clear the owners Tricia & Roger put a lot of thought into the cottage, every convenience is provided for inside & out.

The cottage interior is cozy and updated. WIFI, cable TV for the occasional rainy day, books, gas-flame 'wood stove' furnace to curl up to on a chilly night, coffee maker - bring your own coffee, they provided paper filters, a variety of pots & pans for cooking, and for the kids... bunk beds and board games!! The master suite window overlooks the river. Outside of the cottage there is a beautiful grassy yard that extends directly to the Grand River, a sandy riverbank, a dock, a set of four Adirondack chairs, a new gas grill, a fire pit, plenty of firewood, and even extendable marshmallow roasting sticks!!!

While we stayed at the cottage the owners were very responsive - within an hour - when we contacted them with an occasional question. We really appreciated this, it helped us feel at home.

It is a cottage size so a family of 5 would be the ideal size to comfortably accommodate, although there is a pullout sofa for a max of 7. It is summer in Michigan, expect mosquitos to find you at dusk, we used repellent and they buzzed off.

We enjoyed hiking at the nearby nature trails such as Connor Bayou. For shopping or groceries, the town of Grand Haven is a quick & scenic 15 minute drive. Also when in Grand Haven be sure to stop in at Morning Star Cafe for a DELICIOUS breakfast or lunch, best to go during the week to avoid the line as it gets really crowded on weekends. Also liked Arturo's Tacos and the unique local pizza spot, Fricano's.

Overall, the cottage is a good value for the price. Its direct riverfront location on the Grand River can't be beat. It has a very scenic view because the opposite bank is a wooded Nature Preserve. No houses across the river from you, just trees! There are many different species of birds to watch. It is also fun to see the fishing boats and party boats go by on the river. We wanted to rent kayaks from the outfitter down the road, but we ran out of time.

There are many special elements to the cottage that cannot be captured on the website and are yours to discover.... Our favorites were the Hydrangea bushes starting to bloom, the fireflies at night, the s'mores, and the bald eagles nesting. You will surely find your own reasons to love Captains Cottage!

Thank you Tricia & Roger for a great stay! We will be back!

relaxing vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Captains Cottage. It was very cozy and clean and nicely decorated. You can tell that it is well taken care of. It was a perfect spot for our family. We enjoyed sitting out back and watching the boats and our little girl loved playing in the sand. We also took a charter fishing trip on the Evolution which was one of the highlights of our trip. Sorry Trisha for the delay in posting a review but we have been working like crazy since we got back home. We thoroughly enjoyed this cottage and it was not a far drive to the beach or downtown Grand Haven. We would definitely come back again.

Relaxing Stay on the River

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself, and our 2 dogs enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage. Everything was as described. The home was clean and the owners were easily reached by phone. I enjoyed walking to the nearby park. The view was excellent through out the house. Hope to come again next summer!

Looking for a quiet, relaxing get away for my family I found the Captains Cottage which looked so cozy in pictures.

Do not let the size of this cottage fool you, this comfortable fully equipped cottage provided huge joy, comfort and fun for my family.

The beach for shell searching and swimming, the BBQ and fire pit for evening fun and the river view first thing in the morning to wash away any stress you may have had.

Every question / correspondence was met with remarkable speed and kindness.

I would beyond strongly recommend this cottage for a get away if you are looking to be happy and relaxed.

Close to Grand Haven and Grand Rapids if you are looking for some lovely day trips.

Hope you enjoy your visit as much as we enjoyed ours.

My husband, child and I spent Coast Guard week at this amazing cottage this summer. What a treat! The pictures do not do this adorable place justice. The river is beautiful in the morning, and our nephews fished away the evenings, catching quite a few! The bedrooms were perfect for us, the fire pit was a huge hit, and we had an amazing family vacation here. The neighbor even brought us some fresh grown tomatoes! We will be returning here.
