About The Owner

My husband, three children and I moved next door to this property in 1984. The wonderful neighbor, who came to be known as 'Granny', maintained a lovely home, and we were fortunate to purchase it in 1999. We live next door to the property, and are available to renters for guidance. In the past several years, local families have rented the cottage while renovating their home, and international students have occupied it while in DC for a semester of study. When not working in the gardens, I work as a nurse, and my husband has his own business. Our Portuguese Water Dog keep us busy now that the kids are grown.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1999

Fantastic get-away!

  • 5 of 5

We had another fabulous stay at the cottage while visiting the DC and surrounding area. This was our second trip to the area and second stay at the cottage. It is centrally-located to all of the sights of the DC area and provides a great, comfy place to come 'home' to at the end of the day. We chose this cottage for the second time as it is located on a beautiful garden-like property that feels very secluded yet is just minutes from the city and from Mount Vernon. The setting is very peaceful and Jim and Lisa go out of their way to make you feel at home on their property. We would definitely stay here again when our travels take us back to the beautiful DC area!

We hope we get the chance to stay in the beautiful cottage again! Clean and super comfortable!

I can't say enough about this house. It's lovely. First off, there were two things we were most interested in when looking for a house to rent. One was cleanliness and the other was that the house was in a safe and family friendly area. I can definitely say that this house met both of those qualifications. The area was very nice and definitely safe and family oriented. The house was spotless, from the bed linens to the kitchen utensils and glasses. The house was also incredibly nice to stay in as far as comfort was concerned, it was just like being at home. The kitchen was fully stocked with pans, glasses and utensils. There were several books and magazines in the house. There was also a board game which we played several times and had an absolute blast doing so. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. The deck was a great place to sit in the morning or to eat dinner at night. The Coakleys were so nice and obliging! They did everything they could to make us feel welcome and answer any questions we had about the area or fun things to do. We really enjoyed meeting them on our trip. It was a great stay and we would definitely choose to stay with the Coakleys if we every visit the area again!

The cottage was a comfortable and convenient vacation rental. My husband, my 2 grandchildren and I enjoyed 5 days at the cottage while visiting Washington DC. It was the perfect location for all the places that we wanted to visit in the area.

If you're visiting D.C., this is where you need to stay. Alexandria is a beautiful city and is a super convenient commute to the District. The owners were absolutely wonderful and if we visit again we will stay here.

Wonderful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the cottage! The beds were comfortable and our teenage daughters were able to each have their own space. The outdoor space is beautiful. Jim and Lisa were great hosts. We used the cottage as a home base for trips to DC, Mt. Vernon, Gettysburg and other battlefields.

Wonderful extended weekend visit

  • 5 of 5

Definitely a 5 star experience! Wonderful location. Cottage and grounds are beautiful. Owners are kind and gracious. We toured Mt. Vernon and Riverfarm. A gardeners paradise. Loved Old Town Alexandria. Easy access to the Metro. Toured DC also. Will return in the future. Had a wonderful experience.

So glad this was our intro to the area!
