About The Owner

My husband, three children and I moved next door to this property in 1984. The wonderful neighbor, who came to be known as 'Granny', maintained a lovely home, and we were fortunate to purchase it in 1999. We live next door to the property, and are available to renters for guidance. In the past several years, local families have rented the cottage while renovating their home, and international students have occupied it while in DC for a semester of study. When not working in the gardens, I work as a nurse, and my husband has his own business. Our Portuguese Water Dog keep us busy now that the kids are grown.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1999

Perfect for a Visit to the DC Area

  • 5 of 5

There is so much to love about this cottage! It is clean, functional and so peaceful (which is nice after a busy day on the Mall or at one of the region's other sights). We were able to make a quick drive each day to the Metro stop at Huntington and get in and out of DC with no trouble at all. Right around the corner from Mt. Vernon and Old Town Alexandria -- the location gives you so many options. Our family of five (with three teenagers) fit perfectly. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful. No hesitation in giving it the highest recommendation!

We used the Cottage as home base for exploring Washington DC and Virginia. It is centrally located between DC and Mount Vernon in quaint Old Town Alexandria. It is a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Cottage is clean, well maintained and stocked for all your needs. Lisa and Jim are delightful, responsive and made sure our stay was comfortable. The Cottage worked great for our family of 4 with separate sleeping space for everyone. We are so glad we chose to stay here rather than a hotel room in DC. Our only regret is the weather was not warm enough to get to enjoy the lovely screened in porch.

Awesome Place !

  • 5 of 5

This place was fantastic ! We spent a week there while visiting the area where our son, daughter-in-law and grandsons live. First, we could not believe how well we slept in the beds upstairs. They are so much better than the hotel beds we've slept in and we had no aches and pains from the beds in the cottage. Second, the house is situated in an area where you hardly hear any sounds except birds. We could sit out on the front porch drink our coffee and relax. Third, the cottage was clean and all the amenities worked very well (having nearly instant hot water for the shower was a plus). Fourth, the owners (Lisa and Jim) checked in with us to see if everything was okay and were always available if we needed anything. They were great setting up the fire pit, the hammock and outside toys for our grandsons when they visited us on Saturday night. It made us feel as though our grandsons came to their grandparent's house. It was a week we will always remember and we have Jim and Lisa to thank for it. We will definitely be back to book the cottage the next time.

Fantastic get-away!

  • 5 of 5

We had another fabulous stay at the cottage while visiting the DC and surrounding area. This was our second trip to the area and second stay at the cottage. It is centrally-located to all of the sights of the DC area and provides a great, comfy place to come 'home' to at the end of the day. We chose this cottage for the second time as it is located on a beautiful garden-like property that feels very secluded yet is just minutes from the city and from Mount Vernon. The setting is very peaceful and Jim and Lisa go out of their way to make you feel at home on their property. We would definitely stay here again when our travels take us back to the beautiful DC area!

We hope we get the chance to stay in the beautiful cottage again! Clean and super comfortable!

I can't say enough about this house. It's lovely. First off, there were two things we were most interested in when looking for a house to rent. One was cleanliness and the other was that the house was in a safe and family friendly area. I can definitely say that this house met both of those qualifications. The area was very nice and definitely safe and family oriented. The house was spotless, from the bed linens to the kitchen utensils and glasses. The house was also incredibly nice to stay in as far as comfort was concerned, it was just like being at home. The kitchen was fully stocked with pans, glasses and utensils. There were several books and magazines in the house. There was also a board game which we played several times and had an absolute blast doing so. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. The deck was a great place to sit in the morning or to eat dinner at night. The Coakleys were so nice and obliging! They did everything they could to make us feel welcome and answer any questions we had about the area or fun things to do. We really enjoyed meeting them on our trip. It was a great stay and we would definitely choose to stay with the Coakleys if we every visit the area again!
