About Carol Lewis
My husband and I have owned a landscape company in Palm Beach County, Florida for 36 years.
Carol Lewis purchased this House in 2005
Why Carol Lewis chose Clayton
We developed the nearby Mountain Creek Estates subdivision and saved a wonderful 10-acre lot for ourselves. It borders a rushing creek and has fabulous views. All thoughts of building on our lot went out the window when we discovered this property which was being sold by Coca Cola heiress Frances Woodruff - known locally as 'Mrs. Tut.' As a part-time realtor, I see a lot of properties, but the views from the porch of this cabin and the tranquility of the farm cannot be beat!
What makes this House unique
This property high up on Tut's Mountain was formerly the petting zoo of Coca Cola heiress Frances Woodruff. Remnants of the bear den, eagles' lair and other artifacts still can be seen. Neighbors graze their horses and cows in our pastures. The nearby Town of Clayton has the feel of stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting of a quieter, gentler time when people had time to chat & share recipes in shops. There still is a soda fountain in the drugstore, a drive-in movie theater and a general store where you can buy everything from a house dress to hunting supplies.

As usual: spectacular !
We have chosen MCL over the years for reason: value. Quiet and spacious and well appointed.
Thank you CAROL....we will be back
Loved every minute!
This cabin was so beautiful! The pictures make it look amazing and still don’t do it justice. I went there with my husband, mother, and nieces to celebrate my mother’s birthday with a little rest and relaxation. The adults all loved the peace and quiet with the beautiful scenery while the kids (age from 9-13) loved their own space in the loft and exploring outside. I honestly have no complaints. This cabin is secluded, beautiful, and worth the trip! I could definitely imagine coming back again and again.
Great home with fantastic views
Well appointed, comfortable home with fantastic views. We had a wonderful girls weekend and never needed to leave; but there were plenty of options nearby if we'd chosen to venture out.
Wonderful, relaxing vacation!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cabin! It was extremely clean and the location was perfect. It was so close to so many good hikes, waterfalls and Tallulah Gorge. Our 12 year old son loved the cows and exploring the property. Make sure you drive up the road to the top of the hill that is just past the second gate that you would normally enter. The view from up top is amazing! I am guessing this is where they used to launch hang gliders? We spent a lot of time on the porch in the rockers enjoying the view. We will be back!
Staying at Mountain Creek Lodge was one of the best experiences we've had as a family in a long time. The House is beautiful and in an amazing location with wonderful views and plenty to do nearby. The city of Clayton is only a few miles away where any and all needs are met as far as restaurants, grocery stores, etc. We will highly recommend this home for a Smoky Mountain getaway.
Less than expected
I flew in from CA for a quick getaway with some college friends, two of whom drove up from Orlando. Having spent hours searching for a great place, this one seemed optimal. The house was mostly satisfactory, with the exception of a fairly large population of stink bugs and lady bugs. They emerged at night and would most swarm around chandeliers and lamps, frequently landing on our person, plates, and cups, or on our cards as we played games. Lady bugs would have been tolerable, but the stink bugs were a bit annoying, as we spent quite a bit of time getting rid of them or avoiding them. I was a bit embarrassed, having been the person to find and book the property, so I emailed Carol the first night. She apologized saying bugs do swarm at certain times of the year and that we "lucked out." I then asked if she would consider a discount and she ignored that communique completely. I followed up again a few days later, detailed the experience, again requesting a discount, and was essentially met with accusations that I was lying. Having had only positive experiences renting VRBO properties to date, I was a bit shocked by her dismissive and accountability-avoidant approach, to the point that I do feel compelled to warn future guests, not so much about a possible infestation, but of an owner who may not prioritize ensuring her guests feel like they get what they pay for. Generally speaking, I tend to operate on the assumption that properties I rent will be mostly bug free, a few stragglers here and there wouldn't bother me. In addition to apologizing, any hotel or other property owner would have offered an alternative room or a discount when faced with a similar complaint, at least in my experience. But Carol believes either that I am making up this story entirely or that stink bugs landing on dinner plates is just a routine part of cabin life. The later may be true, but for $700 for two nights, after tacking on the various fees, it simply wasn't what I was expecting, nor was a complete failure to offer recompense.
I am sorry you did not enjoy your rental experience. As you know, my property is a 25-acre farm surrounded by forests. Mother nature cannot be controlled under these circumstances and it is not a good idea to leave the sliding glass doors open at night when all the lights are on. Just as I cannot eradicate all mosquitoes on my South Florida property, I cannot eradicate all of nature's critters from my Georgia property. The guests immediately before and after your 2-day stay did not have the same bug problem and the cleaning lady says she only found 3 dead ladybugs and 2 dead stinkbugs in the 3,000 sq. ft. house when you departed. I was guessing that swarming may be occurring OUTSIDE, but the evidence does not support this conclusion. I hope your experience of the local area was a good one and that you found the cabin to be clean and otherwise comfortable.
