The rare thing about Barefoot Bungalow is the privacy. You don't share a pool or the deck. You have the house, pool, yard and deck completely to yourself. Our Bungalow is located on the tranquil island of Vieques. Our three bedroom, 2 bath home is tastefully furnished in a relaxed, comfortable bungalow style. The property offers an array of amenities, including a pool for your use only, a deck overlooking the ocean, BBQ, washer and dryer, hammock and, of course, the beautiful blue sea a few steps from your doorstep. You can hear the crashing waves from your bedroom and still be surrounded by the tranquility of your own yard. Wake up in the morning and sit outside on your private patio, looking out over the waves at the islands of Culebra, Puerto Rico and on a clear day, St. Thomas, while you sip your coffee. Listen to the sounds of the surf breaking in the evening as the sun sets while you stroll in the sand looking for shells and sea glass, or lie peacefully swinging in the hammock.
Lounge by Pool: What can be more luxurious and refreshing than a dip in your own pool after a long day at the beach? Not much. Lounge in the sun, enjoy the lush tropical foliage, and maybe read a good book. Sit under the fountain and let the water splash over you. Watch the sea gulls and pelicans fly overhead and spot the iguana family that comes to feed on the hibiscus and sun on the wall. Take a night time dip and float on your back and gaze up at the stars.
Easy Living: Two of the things that our guests comment on most frequently are the great night's sleep they experience in our comfortable beds, and the luxurious sheets and towels we provide in abundance. We strive hard to make your experience the vacation you want it to be with a fully equipped kitchen (to help you prepare your fresh-caught seafood), air conditioning in all the rooms, and an outside dining area to enjoy the breeze off the ocean.

About Michael Gordon
My husband, Mike grew up in the quiet town of Houlton, Maine but his family vacationed each year at Wells Beach, Maine. I grew up in Stratford, Connecticut where the beach was always 10 minutes away. We met in San Antonio, while we were each pursuing our individual careers. We both love the ocean and can't ever get enough of it.
Michael Gordon purchased this House in 2009
Why Michael Gordon chose Bravos de Boston
Vieques has something to offer all beach lovers. I like quiet waters to wade in and Media Luna on Vieques is perfect for that. Mike likes to sit under the palms, drink an adult beverage while he listens to the waves, and Red Beach is perfect for that. My daughter and son-in-law love to snorkel and Green Beach offers hours of snorkeling adventures. The people of Vieques are great! The Malecon in Esperanza is fun!

Perfect find on the beach
We loved our stay on Vieques and this charming house on the beach was perfect. I wanted to hear the sound of the waves and be able to walk along the beach with my coffee each morning. Although the weather wasn't as perfect as we had hoped since we were dealing with tropical storm, Harvey, the house and location couldn't have been better. We spent time in the pool after returning home from exploring the Island; walked on the beach each day and found an amazing collection of sea shells. We fully intend to return to Vieques and we hope this home is available again next year. We have already recommended it to too many friends who saw our photos and wanted to hear more. (Although candidly we hope not too many visit Vieques--as we want it to retain its low-key and uncommercial charm.) The house has everything you need to feel right at home during your island stay. Although we did not cook as wanted to experience the island's restaurants the house is fully-stocked. We hope you find it as relaxing as we did.
It is very humbling and at the same time wonderful to know that others can experience the same feelings of peace and relaxation as we do. Thanks so much for giving us this review it means so much to us to know you really had a great vacation at our cottage on Vieques.

Just what we needed!
Our family of five (two adults and kids ages 14, 11 and 8) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home. The house was clean and offered plenty of space for us. We mostly prepared our own meals and found the kitchen to be well-equipped as well. We enjoyed our almost-daily visits to the Superdescuentos Morales, the largest grocery store on the island, to pick up items for the next day's meals. The egg supply tended to run short during our stay, but the grocery store had plenty of other options, with pretty much everything we needed. We were jealous of the island residents, many of whom obviously do not have to rely on eggs from the store, judging by the number of chickens roaming the island! Just like Vieques itself, the house has a quirky charm that we appreciated. We spent the vast majority of our time on the island's many beautiful beaches, but in the evenings it was refreshing to return to the air-conditioned home, and the kids got a lot of use from the pool while we prepared dinner. I would have loved to spend more time at the property, but all those beautiful beaches were calling our names! It is true that the beach behind the house was not particularly swimmable, but we had a great time walking up and down and exploring the rocks. It's not as though you have to look very hard for a swimming beach elsewhere on Vieques!! Aurelio was quite helpful picking us up from the airport and gave very good advice regarding details about various beaches, etc. My husband and I agree that we slept far better on this trip than we ever do at home. I attribute this to feeling like we were "off the grid", and in many ways we were. Our kids enjoyed spotting "satos" (beach doggies) and the many cats that roam the island, as well as many of the people we saw repeatedly in the course of driving around. We would readily return to Vieques and choose this rental again.
Owsley's June 2017 vacation
Excellent location with great accommodations' for 4-6 people! It was great to have the beach, and ocean right in front of the house. We really enjoyed being able to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner while watching the waves come in. If we decided not to swim in the ocean it was great to have a private pool we could swim in, my children loved playing in the pool. Very quiet location compared to the hustle and bustle of a resort.
Beach is nice for wading and strolling; utilize water shoes, a lot of sea urchins plus rocky. It is great for snorkeling and seeing marine life.
Thanks again to Mike and Gail for their hospitality and accommodations!
Simply the Best! We'll Never Stay Anywhere Else!
We've visited Vieques several times and stayed at several different places. This was our second stay at this house and I can honestly say that we'll never stay anywhere else. It's simply the best place on the island. The house is clean and cozy and it has everything you need. And it's just feet away from the water, so all you hear are the peaceful sounds of the waves, which I love!!
The Gordons have added some amazing upgrades since our last stay. My favorite is the new platform in the backyard. I grilled out there almost every night, and it was so incredibly relaxing. They also enclosed the pool, which makes it so much more comfortable and private.
I could go on and on, but I'll just reiterate that it truly is, in my opinion, the best place on the island...and I can't wait to go back!
Thank you Michael and Gail for sharing your amazing slice of paradise!!
Wow!! How heartwarming that our guests enjoy our house as much as we do. I am not even sure what I can add except thank you for your kind words and we are very grateful that you were able to relax and take in the sounds of the ocean. I am glad you enjoyed the new additions. I think having the privacy of the pool makes a huge difference. Thanks again. Gail
We will definitely be back!!
We have been to Vieques many times and without a doubt this was our most favorite place to stay! The Beachfront Bungalow had everything we could want or need for a fantastically relaxing getaway. The home was well equipped with all of the comforts of home and you couldn't ask for a more peaceful and relaxing setting right on the beach. We loved every second of our time there! Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us!
Beautiful ocean front setting, not really usable for swimming - would not recommend for young kids
My husband, me and our two young kids (ages 6 and 8) stayed at the bungalow for one week from 3/18-3/25/17 on our first trip to Vieques. Unfortunately, we never met Aurelio. When we arrived, he was checking someone else in and so he sent Enid to assist.
Pool was great and kids appreciated the use of the inner tubes and noodles. The pool area felt very private which was lovely. The house setting is beautiful - hearing the waves and waking up to the ocean front views is great but given the windy conditions on the north shore and the rocky nature of the shoreline we found the beach to be a great place for a walk and to look for shells and other treasures (which we did almost daily) but largely unswimmable. As a strong swimmer, even I did not feel comfortable going in, let alone putting my kids in even with water shoes.
As others have commented, the beds were very comfortable and the linens and towels (bath and beach) plentiful and appreciated. One note about the master bath, neither me nor my husband used the master stall shower as the shower head was quite low (he's 6'2" and he would have had to hunch down and I might have needed to also at 5'6"). So we all used the second bathroom shower. If folks are interested in doing a good bit of cooking while at the house, be prepared to hand wash the dishes. The property description notes, there is no dishwasher (and we did not presume otherwise) but the reality sets in as you wash away. I appreciated the plastic glasses for use by the pool and by the kids. The kitchen tools/accessories could be refreshed a bit as could much of the home. Photos are accurate to a degree - they highlight the property's best features. I suspect they may have been taken a few yrs ago.
Washer and dryer- it's outside so if it's raining you'll get wet if you choose to use it. We used it almost every day. Very key for us!
IMPERATIVE to have a 4WD to navigate the driveway to get back to the house. The road is horrible and towards the end of the week I was counting down to how many more times we would traverse it.
I would encourage Gail and Michael to refresh the binder as it feels a bit out of date.
Proximity to southern refuge beaches was good - about 20 min depending how far out you went. Esperanza was a bit further but we rode horses with Esperanza Riding and biobay with Isl. Adventures (because of kids) - horses = great, biobay disappointing glow. Green Beach great snorkeling!
Casita del Sol y Mar is located just a mile east of the town of Isabel II on one of Bravos de Bostons' little known reef-fringed, sandy beaches. Just a short stroll west on the beach will lead you to a sandy spot where guests can enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the warm inviting ocean. Walking to the east will take you on a relaxing stroll along the sea coast where you can search for sea glass and seashells and spot the occasional horse cooling off in the mangroves. Other activities are the shops, markets and restaurants in Isabel II. Or, the more adventurous may want to visit the bioluminescent bay, rent bikes, go kayaking, take a hike or arrange for a snorkeling, scuba diving or sports fishing expedition.
