Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 full Bath, 1 enclosed outdoor shower (Sleeps 7)

Vacation rentals for the 2017 season will be taken beginning in January.

Lovely cottage, @1300 sq feet built in 2005, vaulted ceiling, . Bonus room with TV and DVD in loft area. White sandy beach is perfect for families. Very swimable water, which at low tide creates warm pools and sand bars just made for water games and exploring. There is a life guarded beach 150 ft to the North.

There are 2 possible launching places for your boat. Big boats @ a mile to the north, small boats on the beach in front of the cottage. Plenty of space to park your boat at the cottage.

Summer is filled with 'Ceilidhs'-a Gaelic word that means to dance and party. Traditional fiddle music and Scottish step dancing are indigenous to this area.

There is a computer center in the Library just up the street, as well as a medical clinic in Port Hood. The cottage is rented for no less than a week during high season, and no fewer than 5 days during off season periods. Your well-behaved dog is welcome.

Why Margaret McFarland chose Cape Breton Island

The area reminded us of Cape Cod-40 years ago-except no traffic, uncrowded beaches and the Gaelic influence. Cape Breton Island has truly astounding scenery,(We are @ 1 1/2 hours to the Cabot Trail, with wonderful hiking trails and scenic drives everywhere in between.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy the beautiful sandy beach in front of the cottage, a place where if you're lucky, you might see bald eagles teaching their young. We love seeing the fishing boats heading home in the late afternoon. (We hope they're heavy with lobsters) Lobsters are available all summer, but the fishing season for them is June. (Reasonable and delicious!)

Amazing vacation

  • 5 of 5

Had a great vacation at this lovely cottage. The beach was steps away and the deck was amazing with beautiful sunsets every night. The cottage is equipped with all the kitchen essentials for cooking and is very clean and spacious. The outdoor shower is very nice to rinse off after a day at the beach, and there's a washer, dryer and dishwasher also. It was so nice to find a place as nice as this cottage that allowed our dog to enjoy our vacation with us. Would definitely stay again and hope to next summer.

Loved It!

  • 5 of 5

Our second year at this charming cottage is even better than the first! We bring our best friend (our miniature Sheltie) who loves it even more than we do. It is such a joy for us to see her in a less confined environment. Her walks on the beach are fun for all of us.

The cottage is more than "clean and comfortable". Although modern and dramatic, it retains a feel of a traditional summer cottage. It has a spectacular view and location. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the deck just watching the lobster boats and the seabirds.

The beach in front of the cottage is beautiful as well. Sand and gentle waves-perfect for kids and Shelties!

Highly recommended, we'll be back.

Dishonest people

  • 1 of 5

The cottage was not cleaned when we arrived. Comet left in the bathtub, toilet and sink for us to clean to clean ourselves. The floors were not swept and our sheets had to be washed before we could go to sleep because they were soiled and there was not an extra set to use. When we went to use the dishes there was food remnants on many of them so we had to wash them before we could serve dinner. Both chairs and ottoman in the livingroom area are stained and ripped, as well as most of the screens on the windows. Also the closets are a mess, there is a pile of junk in each one. The beds are like sleeping on wood blocks. The bed clothes are gross. Advertised satellite TV has less channels than basic cable and the BBQ is basically a pot with charcoal you can't cook more than 4 burgers at a time. Then to top it all off we read that the renter is responsible for cleaning the the bathroom, sweeping all the floors and washing the bed clothes before departing, among other general housekeeping duties. We left the cottage in better shape than we found it and we were told there were "several" issues with returning our damage deposit. Repair of a screen, scratches on a TV screen and paying the housekeeper for two hours because apparently we left the cottage a mess. All untrue accusations with no proof offered. I do not recommend staying here, although the location is perfection, these people are not honest people and do not deserve your money. If you are already booked to stay here. Take pictures of everything before you leave.

Owner's Response: A FINE WHINE Before I heard a report from my housekeeper detailing a damaged television screen, (over 20 scratches on the screen itself ) ripped window screen and the need to bring in EXTRA help in order to clean the cottage on time for the next guests, this renter had requested a week for NEXT summer. "We had a wonderful vacation..." This vitriolic is the result of having her security deposit docked $110. .................Canadian. These renters are not recommended. 0 Stars

All you'll ever want in a vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from our third stay at this lovely cottage and, like the first two times, we didn't want to leave! The cabin delivers on all promises and then some. The layout is ideal and all amenities are available in this clean modern house. The location is spectacular - be prepared to take advantage of meals on the spacious deck - we especially enjoyed breakfast in the warm sunshine, greeting friendly neighbours as they walked along the quiet road and watching the bald eagles soar overhead. The beach is just moments away and has a wonderful 'sand bar' section where young ones especially can play in the warm waves. The beach is never crowded, always lots of room to spread out.

As noted in the description and other reviews, there are numerous cultural, social and physical activities to enjoy along route 19, within short driving distances and, of course, the spectacular Highlands National Park is only an hour away. (Our vehicle was often seen at the ice cream barn just a few Ks from the cottage!)

You will not be disappointed - it's a comfy cottage in a gorgeous quiet setting with many options for entertainment and eating out nearby. Already looking forward to our next stay! Thank you Peg!

Owner's Response: Besides being uncrowded, what I like most about the beach is the breakwater. On the North side, deep water and "serious" swimming; on the South at low tide, "serious" splashing and warm water for kids. (and adults!)
