About the property

Lodge, 6 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 12-15

A serene, scenic setting for milestone events: Off-site retreats. Family reunions. Overflow space for out-of-town kin at weddings or funerals. Enjoy a private bedroom , or wander over 300 acres of woodland, and meadow. Gather together in the great room. Talk privately in the office.

Visit nearby attractions. In less than 25 minutes you can be at the D-Day Memorial, Blue Ridge Parkway, Peaks of Otter recreation area, or the James River.

Liberty University, Smith Mountain Lake, Roanoke, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, and the Booker T. Washington National Monument are less than an hour away.

Economize by cooking for yourself, or splurge by calling on a local catering service. There's even a five-star restaurant three miles away -- but you will need to make reservations for the Mill Stone Tea Room!

Sit on the deck after dinner, and watch the sun set behind the Peaks of Otter. Then enjoy DVDs (or PowerPoint presentations!) on the flatscreen monitor.

Rally your team in the spacious great room, with more than 600 square feet of floor space. Or, have private meetings in the conference room. Bring a spirit of adventure, and take home a harvest of memories.

About Tom Smedley the Younger

Urban and regional planner retired to raise apples, cattle, and children. A passionate outdoorsman, he enjoys welcoming people who share his appreciation for the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tom Smedley the Younger purchased this lodge in 1970

Why Tom Smedley the Younger chose Central Virginia

Tom Smedley views Appalachia as 'the playground for megalopolis.' In less than three hours, residents of Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, or the North Carolina Triad and Triangle areas, can find clean air, mountains, wildlife, and breathing room.

What makes this lodge unique

This facility is made to order for larger groups. Six couples and three of their children can retreat to private bedrooms, mingle with co-workers or kin in the great room, have private conversations in a small office, or hike the 300+ acres with kissing cousins.

Listen to the music of Overstreet Creek. Lift your eyes to horizons many miles away, clearly visible in the transparent air. Watch the clouds playing tag with the mountain tops. See new birds on south- and north-facing hillsides.

Let us help you make your milestone events truly memorable.

Owner's Response: A happy family, enjoying a family outing together -- delightful people, perfect guests. Vinay shared my love for the movie "My Name is Khan." If you've not seen it yet, you should! Tom the Younger

Owner/Operator is wonderful and accommodating!

Tom was so generous and concerned when we approached him with our lodging needs. Lovely, rustic lodge, with peace and quiet all around! A real gem!

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed yourself. Color us prejudiced -- but we view Wheats Valley as one of the loveliest places on earth! Natural beauty too good to keep to ourselves. Hope to see you again!

Large, rustic hunting lodge– perfect for big groups

  • 5 of 5

Great place for large groups! We had a tough time finding a space that would fit our whole crew, but this was prefect for us. Both Tom the Elder and Tom the Younger were welcoming, helpful and great hosts. The house had plenty of bedrooms and seating for all. I wish that we could have stayed longer– we were very comfortable there.

My only negative feedback is that the kitchen only has very basic items. Cooking for 15+ people was a bit of a challenge with regular size pots & pans, but we made it work. I would recommend that if you're planning to cook for a large group, bring your own large pots & pans / crock pot / bakeware.

Would recommend!

Owner's Response: No, leave your pots and pans at home. Gretchen B. brought something to our attention that should have been obvious. The next guests will find large pots and a massive skillet or two. Gretchen and her friends were great people, and this suggestion will make things even better for future guests.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family from 4 States and overseas stayed here for my daughter's graduation at Liberty University. Great home and very comfortable. We enjoyed the property and built a good bonfire to roast marshmallows. We never could figure out the Internet and the landline didn't work, so it forced us to spend time together playing games and enjoying ourselves. The owner lives in the property next door so we weren't worried if we needed help. Would definitely go back! A short 25 minute drive to Lynchburg with gorgeous scenery.
