This pre-Revolutionary three-story colonial house, originally built circa 1760 as the first schoolhouse, has been used as a private residence since the 1790s. Its many charming, historic features remain intact, wide-board flooring and wall paneling, fireplaces, wrought-iron hardware, and so forth.
Rockport sits at the tip of Cape Ann, north of Boston, and is easily accessible by air, rail, road and sea. It's a different world once you're here. You can walk almost everywhere. Just unpack, unwind, and enjoy the fresh ocean breezes and the luminous northern light.
Massachusetts' "other cape" is comprised of the towns of Rockport, Gloucester, Essex, and Manchester-by-the-Sea and offers many opportunities for enjoyment and enlightenment. And, it's an especially good place to rest and find peace.
Cape Ann is blessed with an abundance of natural characteristics that conjure up romance and adventure - water views everywhere, many picturesque coves and necks, rocky shores, and sandy beaches.
Just listen to some of the place names - Lobster Cove, Halibut Point, Pigeon Cove, Singing Beach, Bass Rocks, Loblolly Cove, Pebble Beach, Gap Head, Bearskin Neck, Hoop Pole Cove, Old Garden Beach, Rum Rock Lake, Plum Cove, Canney's Quarry, Kettle Cove, Norman's Woe.
Cape Ann has long enjoyed the company of artists, photographers, writers, musicians, crafstpeople, antique dealers, retirees, and just about anyone in search of mystique and charm. American history abounds everywhere, the first settlers having arrived in the 1620s.
Life can be good!!

About the owner: Sue and Tom Gee are both educators. Sue was a public school teacher, principal, and school superintendent in Vermont, California, and Massachusetts, and now works as the Executive Director of the Vermont Association for Middle Level Education, traveling to Vermont 6-8 times a year. Tom , formerly a college president and now Executive Director of FCD Prevention Works, part of the Hazelden/Betty Ford Foundation. Tom was on the original staff of the Peace Corps and worked with Sargent Shriver in the War on Poverty. We have been living on Cape Ann for over 20 years, and have been offering our guest apartment to summer visitors for about 15 years.
Why the Owner Chose Rockport, MA, USA:
We are on the Main Street of one of the oldest towns on the North Shore of Boston. The home was built in the 1760s, and has many of the original features. We lived in Vermont for many years and, though we loved Vermont, we missed the ocean. As luck would have it, Sue was chosen to be a middle school principal in Gloucester in 1994, and here we are!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
We chose 36 Main Street for the charm of living in an antique home within the historical artist colony of Rockport. Cape Ann has many unique qualities, being almost an island, connected only by a bridge to the rest of the North Shore. We have met many wonderful guests who have returned year after year for the charm and ocean breezes found in this quaint seaside town. Visitors can take day trips to interesting museums, visit Salem and other historic cities, and ride the train to Boston for a day of site-seeing, or they can just rest and enjoy the beauty of Cape Ann.
