A fully equipped kitchen, two gas fireplaces (one in the living room, one in the bedroom), large (15' x 20') balcony and a jetted tub in the bathroom! Go up a spiral stairway to the upper floor bedroom! Magnificent views of the harbor seem to be constantly changing from the large picture windows in the living room! Restaurants, bars, fishing and sailing trips and more are available within easy walk (or let us book one for you!). Walk your dog on the quarter mile long boardwalk just across from your apartment! Tour the headquarters of the famous Rouge brewery here on the Bay! We are directly across the bay from the new NOAA West coast headquarters! Other local attractions include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, Undersea Gardens, majestic and unpopulated ocean beaches, lighthouses, ocean and bay cruises, an oyster farm, scenic coastal overlooks and more! Crabbing, clamming and fishing are favorite local pastimes. Come watch the whale migration this winter! Kite and windsurfing are possible and lessons are available! There is a local Indian gaming casino nearby (Lincoln City) with gambling, restaurants, shows and more. There are several events throughout the year in and around Newport that should not be missed! Check with our local Chamber of Commerce website. People tend to book early for the Seafood and Wine Festival, in February. We have the best seats in Newport for the 4th of July fireworks on the Bay from your apartment balcony! Tuna, salmon, halibut, crab, rock cod, clams and more are some of the varied fish and shellfish you will find off shore and in our bays and rivers! It would be hard to see it all in a just a few days!
Contact us for details on renting the adjoining apartment to double your space!
Order food from our Sail Inn Cafe where you can dine on the large indoor/outdoor deck while watching the people walk by and viewing the fishing boats. The restaurant's open from 11AM to 7 PM and we can deliver to your room. Some have asked if you can hear anything from the restaurant in the apartments upstairs. The answer is absolutely not - in fact most people love the convenience of the great food and drink we offer and no one has ever mentioned hearing anything below (except the nearby sea lions which they love!)
Eat and surf the net with our WiFi connection at the restaurant, or in your apartment. You'll find the freshest seafood, burgers, Thai food and a full bar for lunch and dinner seven days a week (open noon on Sunday). The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and the outside deck is pet friendly.
The Sail Inn is often described in our guest book as 'the perfect romantic getaway!'
Like they say, 'It's better by the Bay!' Hope to see you here!
Many of the attractions of Newport are either a short walk or drive away. With enough seafood bistros, pubs, cafes, and family restaurants to keep you well-fed for a month, you may never want to leave Newport. There are plenty of antique shops, galleries, and arcades to explore, so rainy days won't be any problem at all. When the sun shines, you can head to South Beach State Park for a guided kayak tour, surf at Agate Beach, play a round of golf, dig for razor clams, or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Newport has something special to offer every member of your family!

About Chin Hickey
I have been a photographer, writer and filmmaker for over 50 years. I have also been involved with the tourist industry for many years, even working as a tour guide in the Amazon and leading the first organized group hikes (for the Sierra Club) on the Machu Picchu Trail in Peru. For the past 15 years I was sidetracked, converting old properties into new businesses. First was the old farmhouse on the edge of Hollywood, CA I bought and converted through a long and very difficult process into the Farmhouse Cafe. I ran this for a few years as a Thai restaurant, but slowly grew more and more disillusioned with the film biz in Hollywood and life in LA and turned my sites toward a more peaceful life in Oregon. I sold my house and restaurant in LA and bought some commercial properties in Newport and a home in the country nearby. Three more long and difficult years of zoning changes, payoffs, red tape and endless dollars spent, we opened the Sail Inn, occupying the upper floors of the Bayfront property in Newport. Having gone through the long and very difficult process of converting a residence to a restaurant in LA I swore to “never again” attempt such a project. Instead I would keep the ground floor space as a retail rental. But while digging ditches and hanging around the building during the three years of construction, I must have had dozens of people stop and ask, “Do you know where Local Ocean is?” (a Bayfront popular restaurant) and I just couldn’t stand it anymore. So began the next one and a half year project to convert that ground level space into the Sail Inn Cafe. The Sail Inn businesses have taken off and are now quite successful. The restaurant is holding its own in very difficult economic times, when many other restaurants have come and gone since we arrived. Hopefully, now that the dust has settled and we have been open for a while, I can once again return to my roots of travel, writing, photography and film during the off season Winter months!
Chin Hickey purchased this Apartment in 2005
Why Chin Hickey chose Historic Bayfront
Location! Location! Location! I bought this Bayfront property, sight unseen from an internet listing only on the market a few days. I had my broker place an offer and to my surprise it was immediately accepted! It was a small, empty, two story building with an extra lot on one side. I based my decision on its location – that million dollar Bayfront, fishing fleet and harbor view! The view from the deck with ever changing views by day or night! I love talking to people from all over the world who come to spend a night or have a meal. I love their expression as they enter the apartment and see the view from the living room picture window for the first time and walk out on the deck and up the spiral stairway to the bedroom upstairs! Walk to Bayfront shops and attractions for an added bonus. Stroll the boardwalk along the bay to see the fishing boats on the docks. Buy fresh fish or crab from the fishermen. Visit the sea lions. Drive along Bay Blvd. to visit the Oregon Oyster Farm for fresh oysters! There’s 4th of July fireworks on the Bay right in front of your apartment and the lighted Boat Parade in December and the view of the large NOAA research vessels docked right across the bay from us. There’s the Newport Aquarium, Rogue Brewery headquarters, Hatfield Science Center, and soon to be completed International Marine Terminal where ocean going tour boats will come and go! Deep sea fishing, crabbing, beautiful, nearly empty State Park beaches, lighthouses, whale watching and more! I can go on, but why not come and discover it yourself! Proudest moment: I was downstairs working on construction of the restaurant and a family was checking into one of the apartments upstairs. I heard footsteps, running around the apartment and up and down the spiral stairway and a young girl screams, “Mommy, this is the best place we’ve ever stayed in!” Moments like this make it all worthwhile!
What makes this Apartment unique
One of the few rental properties right on the Bayfront in Newport. Even fewer rentals have a great view of the commercial fishing harbor, and this is the best! Plus it's a front row seat to the 4th of July fireworks, Lighted Boat parade and several other seasonal events!

Ive stayed here before and loved it but this time was very different. Showed up and used the combo to get the key from the lock box. Once arriving I went upstairs for a nap after traveling. I then began to hear voices downstairs walking around. I yelled HELLO and then heard the door slam and whoever was in my rental had left. I know I locked the door but I thought I had forgotten to and maybe the people who rented the other side had mistaken come to my room. I locked the door and used the chain on the door. Later Friday afternoon about 3pm I was in the bath when I heard the door which I had LOCKED came into the chain alarming my service animal. I rushed out of the bath still wet and only covered in a town to the yelling of a woman using poor English. When I opened the door she began yelling at me saying that I was going to be charged for having a service animal. I began to tell her the Oregon laws but she then berated me and kept telling me she was going to call her LAWYER. Keep in mind im still very much wet and naked other than a towel. I told her I wanted to talk to the manager which she then told me she was the manager and that the discussion was OVER.
After I calmed down I went down to the restaurant to talk to her. I pulled up the Oregon state laws below and told here I was a Veteran covered by the ADA and showed her which laws covered me. She then proceeded to tell me what she thought about the laws and proceeded to berate me infront of customers.
That was the last time I had to deal with her. People that are crippled from an ailment are not required to wear a T shirt letting everyone know whats wrong with them, people don't drive around with handicapped placards unless they need them and I don't need to be berated because someone who barely speaks English doesn't agree with State and Federal Laws.
I first want to apologize for everything that had happened with your stay. This is the co-owner of the Sail Inn and I wanted to take the time to explain the miscommunication with our manger and the policies we have.
In our establishment we do allow service animals. We understand the importance of having a companion with you on your stay to make everything more relaxing and enjoyable. To address your first statement about “hearing voices and someone walking down stairs,” that was actually our manager who at the time did not know that you had checked into the room. Upon speaking with her she was making sure the toilet paper was filled and there was fresh clean towels and minor details to make sure were finished. Again she had no idea that you had checked in the room, as people do tend to come at all hours whether right at check in or 6,7,8,or sometimes midnight.
In regards to having your service animal, my manger had no knowledge that a dog would at all be present. No you don’t need to provide paperwork which I have discussed with her, but you do need to let us know that their will be a dog staying. You will not be charged at our establishment for your service animal but we just need to know. The reason being is that we do separate cleaning for whenever a guest leaves who has had a pet there. Also in our past we have dealt with aggressive animals not saying that yours is at all by any means but it just gives everyone on the property a heads up on whats going on.
Again I am sorry that this experience was not as enjoyable then the one you’ve had previously. I have sat down and talked with our manager and have discussed Oregon laws upon service animals so we do not run into this issue again.
Disappointing to say the least
The location is nice, great view of the harbor. This is where the positive ends. Inside - old mismatched furniture, TVs did not work, linens looked dirty, blankets - old, dirty, previous guests hair still on them.
Even my kids kept asking how I could possibly rent this place.
Great location but very dirty
Let's start on an positive note;
1) great location
2) friendly owner
3)cute place to stay
Why I would not stay there ever again;
1) VERY DIRTY!
2) hairs on the bed sheets
3) when my daughter spilt water on the floor and had to wipe it, the paper towel she used was black from the dirt on the floor.
4) bath towels had, I am not even sure how to explain it, and old spider web with dirt on it.
5) extra blankets had dirt and dander all over them. Obviously not washed in awhile
6) futon smells
I will admit that I like things to be clean but I am not afraid to go camping. I can take a mess. But this property is not clean. There is layer of filth. My husband usually does not care about dirt, as long as there is a comfy bed, he is happy. At Sail Inn, he was disgusted too. We made light of it all, and made the best of it,but we hightailed it out of there first thing in the morning.
If cleanliness is important to you, I would not recommend Sail Inn.
Apt by the Dock
This was a great little apartment to stay in. It's right on the marina, walk to all shops and restaurants. My husband and I stayed in the upstairs Loft area, and my mother-in-law and kids stayed downstairs in the living room area. It fit all 5 of us nicely. I will say that there is no door between Loft and living quarters room. The apartment had everything we needed and for the most part was clean (the ceiling fans need cleaning). Our dog was comfortable and the balcony overlooking the marina was beautiful. You do hear the sea lions barking and they can be very loud although it did not bother us, it may bother some. We would stay again.
Excellent place to stay!!
What a wonderful place to stay in Newport. We absolutely loved this place!! Fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Clean, comfortable and the view is incredible. So convenient to everything!! We hope to visit again and will definitely stay here. The listing was exactly right only it is even better than described!! We would definitely recommend this to a friend or relative. It is dog friendly also and our dog loved it. We love to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed. For those who like to eat out there are lots of restaurants within walking distance. Of course the cafe downstairs was great. Loved our stay!!!!
Wonderful place to stay!
We stayed at the Sail Inn from Jan 16-19, 2014, and enjoyed our stay very much. The view of the harbor is spectacular - especially at sunrise. If you like to see the comings and goings of people and boats, this is the place for you. Though located above a restaurant, the apartment is very quiet. Our communication with owner, David, was mostly via email and very timely. The apartment was clean, the beds and futon comfortable, and the deep, jet tub a treat. This location is ideal for walking to all of the downtown shop and attractions and watching the sea lions near the docks. Sail Inn is just a short drive over the bridge to the Hatfield Marine Science Center and Oregon Coast Aquarium, and is just minutes from the beach and the rest of Newport.
We came as a family with the idea that the upstairs/downstairs would work well for separation of space and noise. It did not. There are no doors between the upstairs and downstairs - just the spiral staircase - and you can hear everything that's going on between the two floors. The spiral staircase is metal, and you need to be careful. My son scraped his shin up pretty good when he dashed up the stairs too quickly. Another note: the bathroom is located downstairs while the bed is located upstairs. This may be a problem for those who don't want to navigate a narrow spiral staircase at night.
Overall, staying at the Sail Inn was a great experience, and we definitely recommend it!
Sail Inn Cafe, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Chinook Winds Casino, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Undersea Gardens, NOAA, two state park lighthouses, whaling, sailing, deep sea fishing, crabbing, Rouge Brewery, and so much more…
