If you are looking for a 'party' house, this is not the place for which you are searching. Rather, one or two mature couples, or a family of four or five who wish to spend some quality time together are the guests who will get the most from this lovely lakeside setting.
SUMMERTIME AT THE LAKE
Kinderhook Lake is a good size "fishin' hole" of 375 aces. It is stocked with Walleye, Northern Pike, Perch and Bass. Since the Lake is just outside the door, you can fish right off the bank. (Our own grandchildren have a lot of fun going out with their fishing poles and then coming inside with their trophies, asking one of the grown-ups to cook them.) It’s great for swimming, too. Stone steps lead down into the Lake (left side) and make it quite easy for “little ones” or “older ones” to enjoy the cool, spring-fed waters on a hot summer day.
The Norman Rockwell Museum, Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, the NYS Capitol, Tanglewood, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Lindenwald (the family home of Martin Van Buren, our 8th President and the first born as an American citizen!), Saratoga Race Track, Lake George and “The Great Escape” amusement park – all are close enough to provide easy and entertaining day trips. Of course, you might prefer to do nothing except sit by the lake, relax and enjoy!

A dream vacation
This was the second year my husband, son, brother and sister in law stayed at the little cottage and we all felt at home but in a much more relaxed and lovely way. The house is beautiful - the new kitchen appliances are wonderful and what can anyone say about waking up in the morning and looking out on that lake!
Betty Jo does really treat us as guests in her home and we feel so comfortable there. We look forward to many more visits!
To receive such lovely comments from any visitor is a pleasure, but when it comes from one of our returning guests it is even more so. How thoughtful it was of Barbara to notice some of this year’s upgrades and to tell me how much she liked them. We love sharing our home with her and would always welcome her back.
Perfect place to watch the sun set
We had a lovely stay in early August. The house is in pristine condition and the house and kitchen are better equipped than any other I've rented (and I've rented many.) There is even a printer provided (with a supply of paper) if you bring a laptop. But the best part is the location - right on the lake, and very quiet. We did quite a few things over the week - Olana, Martin Van Buren house, the Clark Museum, Mass MoCA, the Barrington Stage theater in Pittsfield, window shopping in Hudson, eating out - but the most memorable was sitting on the porch watching the sun set. What a lovely, restful spot. Betty Jo, the owner, is very gracious. She doesn't live nearby but is always available by phone and email. And her sister Mary, who is also lovely, lives a few doors down and came over when we had trouble figuring out the wifi (the modem was unplugged - did we feel dumb.) The one cautionary note - if you are looking for a place where you can literally kick back and put your feet on the furniture, this rental is probably not for you. There are a lot of rules about what to do and not do. The result though, is that the house is in an extremely well-maintained condition.
We so appreciate the wonderful guests whom we have welcomed to The Little Cottage House and who treat it as the home that it is, rather than "just a rental place." Many suggestions and observations have been received over the years from gracious visitors, including this thoughtful guest, and which subsequently have been incorporated into the Cottage. They really are valued. Thank you
Great family time
My parents and my brothers(ages 14,12,9) and I came back to stay at the Little Cottage for the fifth time. It is so fun getting up every morning to go fishing and swimming in the lake. We are able to catch all sorts of fish! We also really like to go down to the school and play tennis and basketball. It is great a place and we all love getting to spend a week there each year!!
Several times over the years that this family has been our guest, I have returned to the Cottage for my own R&R to find that not only did their parents graciously sign our Guest Book, but so did at least one of the boys. How special is that! Thank you
Just what the doctor ordered.
If you are city people like us and need to unwind and just relax, this is a great place for you. The house is well maintained and nicely decorated. Great view of the lake and the neighbors are quiet. There are no locked cabinets or signs that say "renters keep out". This may be a small thing, but it really makes you feel you're in a home and adds to the relaxed feeling. Betty Jo is a wonderful host. She called us the night we arrived to make sure all was well and told us anything we need was a phone call away. We rented from HomeAway about a half dozen times so far and this was the best experience yet. Thanks Betty Jo. Don't be surprised if you hear from us again.
Having you feel welcome and relaxed at The Little Cottage is just what I would want for you and all who come to our home. Thank you for letting us know that you did enjoy your time on the Lake. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back anytime.
I hope that you caught some fish!
Enchanting Weekend Getaway
My husband and son were looking for a last minute (long weekend) getaway. We found "The Little Cottage" on VRBO and how happy we are that we did. The views of the lake, sunrise and sunset were breathtaking. The interior of the house was newly constructed, immaculate and had every kitchen, bathroom and bedroom item you could need. The owner's Betty Jo and Gene were most accommodating to my last minute needs, and extremely friendly and provided a lot of information about the area attractions, etc. As first time users of VRBO and HomeAway, we were thrilled at our experience and will be visiting the same home again very soon. The memories that were made at the little cottage will last me a lifetime.
How nice it was to hear from this lovely young family who wanted to take a few days break from their busy professional lives and enjoy some personal time at the Lake. I am delighted that it lived up to their expectations and that their first HomeAway/VRBO websites experience was a good one.
Left two days early
Found the lake to be beautiful and the home adequate. There was nothing lacking. Kitchen fully equipped. Deck is a beautiful place to watch the a beautiful sunset. A surprise birthday celebration resulted in a distressing email from the owner. 5 cars instead of the allotted 2 in the driveway caused a complaint. Total number of visitors for one day exceeded by three. No loud talking. No bad behavior. Just family enjoyment. No additional overnight stays. It was a sad ending to an otherwise perfect day. That and the very long list of rules were very stifling. I will not be returning. For the weekly rental I expect privacy. I also did not expect to be told to launder the sheets upon my exit. As well as scrubbing the grill clean. Which by the way I had to do before I could use it. Seems like the cleaning staff may need some supervision. Instead of the guests being watched and reported.
We appreciate your feedback and are disappointed to hear about your concerns. Feedback such as this is valued and will be taken into consideration, as we are always striving to maintain a high level of excellence. Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
In the interest of fairness, I would like to share part of an e-mail that I received from guests who stayed at The Little Cottage in August: "... had a fantastic week ~ the weather was great !! Every day we went out here & there. Sunday, went to the Winery, Monday to Martin Van Buren house, then had lunch at Main Street Café in Valatie, Tuesday had my family over for BBQ …, Wednesday visited my sister-in-law in Chatham, then went to Price Chopper, Thursday relaxed most of the day but went to the Columbia Cty. Fair for just a bit, Friday we went to Saratoga town had a fantastic lunch at Wheat~fields, then went to track, had a great time. All in all it was so much fun & at night we relaxed by cooking on the grill outside, sitting outside on the deck enjoying the sunsets & stars & making breakfasts every morning, etc...thank you so very much "
In-season you can conveniently visit Tanglewood Music Festival, Saratoga Race Track, Lindenwald- the family home of our first US citizen-born President: Martin Van Buren, enjoy the Chatham Fair, take a Dinner Cruise on Lake George or just fish and/or swim in front of the cottage. Off-season your day trips might include skiing, visiting the State Capitol, Hyde Park (FDR's home), Cooperstown, the Rockwell Museum, shopping and antiquing or... just doing nothing!
