Overview

About the property

2 Mstr. bedrms, 2 bathrms. Sleeps 5. Ideal for one/two couples or a family of 5

If you are looking for a 'party' house, this is not the place for which you are surfing. Rather, one or two mature couples, or a family of four or five who wish to spend some quality time together are the guests who will get the most from this lovely lakeside setting.

SUMMERTIME AT THE LAKE

Kinderhook Lake is a good size "fishin' hole" of 375 aces. It is stocked with Walleye, Northern Pike, Perch and Bass. Since the Lake is just outside the door, you can fish right off the bank. (Our own grandchildren have had a lot of fun going out with their fishing poles and then coming inside with their trophies, asking their moms to cook them.) It’s great for swimming, too. Stone steps down into the Lake make it quite easy for “little ones” or “older ones” to enjoy the cool, spring-fed waters on a hot summer day.

The Norman Rockwell Museum, Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, the NYS Capitol, Tanglewood, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Lindenwald (the family home of Martin Van Buren, our 8th President and the first born as an American citizen!), Saratoga Race Track, Lake George and “The Great Escape” amusement park – all are close enough to provide easy and entertaining day trips. Of course, you might prefer to do nothing except sit by the lake, relax and enjoy!

Notes:
The fireplace is a gas one, and turns on with the flip of a switch in the fall and winter months. The ambiance it provides is charming. If you are traveling with the children, it is probably the place where the two of you would enjoy some relaxing quiet time, after the youngsters have gone to bed! (There is a built-in night light in the fireplace, so that even in the warmer months-when lighting the fireplace is not feasible- a cozy and restful atmosphere can be created.)

a quiet and relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here in mid-August and absolutely loved it. The house was immaculately clean, the location was quiet and the lake was lovely. The property is close enough to Hudson and Albany for day trips. But if you just want to relax, do a bit of reading and swimming and enjoy the view, this spot is perfect.

Owner's Response: It gives me great pleasure to have guests in my home who enjoy and appreciate it as much as my family and I do. Regardless of the time of year, there is something special to do or see in this lovely part of New York State and the "Little Cottage" house is the ideal base from which to explore. As to its relaxing and peaceful atmosphere-that, too, is present twelve months a year.

A dream vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was the second year my husband, son, brother and sister in law stayed at the little cottage and we all felt at home but in a much more relaxed and lovely way. The house is beautiful - the new kitchen appliances are wonderful and what can anyone say about waking up in the morning and looking out on that lake!

Betty Jo does really treat us as guests in her home and we feel so comfortable there. We look forward to many more visits!

Owner's Response: To receive such lovely comments from any visitor is a pleasure, but when it comes from one of our returning guests it is even more so. How thoughtful it was of Barbara to notice some of this year’s upgrades and to tell me how much she liked them. We love sharing our home with her and would always welcome her back.

Perfect place to watch the sun set

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in early August. The house is in pristine condition and the house and kitchen are better equipped than any other I've rented (and I've rented many.) There is even a printer provided (with a supply of paper) if you bring a laptop. But the best part is the location - right on the lake, and very quiet. We did quite a few things over the week - Olana, Martin Van Buren house, the Clark Museum, Mass MoCA, the Barrington Stage theater in Pittsfield, window shopping in Hudson, eating out - but the most memorable was sitting on the porch watching the sun set. What a lovely, restful spot. Betty Jo, the owner, is very gracious. She doesn't live nearby but is always available by phone and email. And her sister Mary, who is also lovely, lives a few doors down and came over when we had trouble figuring out the wifi (the modem was unplugged - did we feel dumb.) The one cautionary note - if you are looking for a place where you can literally kick back and put your feet on the furniture, this rental is probably not for you. There are a lot of rules about what to do and not do. The result though, is that the house is in an extremely well-maintained condition.

Owner's Response: We so appreciate the wonderful guests whom we have welcomed to The Little Cottage House and who treat it as the home that it is, rather than "just a rental place." Many suggestions and observations have been received over the years from gracious visitors, including this thoughtful guest, and which subsequently have been incorporated into the Cottage. They really are valued. Thank you

Great family time

  • 5 of 5

My parents and my brothers(ages 14,12,9) and I came back to stay at the Little Cottage for the fifth time. It is so fun getting up every morning to go fishing and swimming in the lake. We are able to catch all sorts of fish! We also really like to go down to the school and play tennis and basketball. It is great a place and we all love getting to spend a week there each year!!

Owner's Response: Several times over the years that this family has been our guest, I have returned to the Cottage for my own R&R to find that not only did their parents graciously sign our Guest Book, but so did at least one of the boys. How special is that! Thank you

Just what the doctor ordered.

  • 5 of 5

If you are city people like us and need to unwind and just relax, this is a great place for you. The house is well maintained and nicely decorated. Great view of the lake and the neighbors are quiet. There are no locked cabinets or signs that say "renters keep out". This may be a small thing, but it really makes you feel you're in a home and adds to the relaxed feeling. Betty Jo is a wonderful host. She called us the night we arrived to make sure all was well and told us anything we need was a phone call away. We rented from HomeAway about a half dozen times so far and this was the best experience yet. Thanks Betty Jo. Don't be surprised if you hear from us again.

Enchanting Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and son were looking for a last minute (long weekend) getaway. We found "The Little Cottage" on VRBO and how happy we are that we did. The views of the lake, sunrise and sunset were breathtaking. The interior of the house was newly constructed, immaculate and had every kitchen, bathroom and bedroom item you could need. The owner's Betty Jo and Gene were most accommodating to my last minute needs, and extremely friendly and provided a lot of information about the area attractions, etc. As first time users of VRBO and HomeAway, we were thrilled at our experience and will be visiting the same home again very soon. The memories that were made at the little cottage will last me a lifetime.

Owner's Response: How nice it was to hear from this lovely young family who wanted to take a few days break from their busy professional lives and enjoy some personal time at the Lake. I am delighted that it lived up to their expectations and that their first HomeAway/VRBO websites experience was a good one.
